Then DG Carolyn E.Jones was the sitting District Governor of the largest District in the Rotary world Her geographical territory included the Yukon Territory of  Canada, all  of Alaska, and everything east of the Ural Mountains of Russia (Far East Russia).  Far East Russia is larger than all of the United States of America

PDG Carolyn E.Jones, 1997- 98 D5010

One of  PDG Carol's great successes during her Rotary year was her `Children of Russia' project which was   created and designed to help the children which came within the embrace of   the 22 Rotary Clubs in the Far Eastern portion of her Rotary District.

This was done with a unique pairing of   her other District Clubs, and the help of many other Clubs and Districts throughout the Rotary World.

Through the matching funds programme of the Rotary Foundation, the DDF from other Districts, and the participation from many individual Rotary Clubs (18 from Hawaii), over US$600,000,00 had been committed to the Project up to time of  the District Convention.

Visit to the Governor of Hawaii

GovHawaii.gif (66796 bytes)

The focus of my trip  was to attend the World Rotary Convention in Indianapolis.     On June 2, 1998, I left Australia for Hawaii where I stayed with Rotary pal, Past President Gene Grounds of the Rotary Club of Waikiki.    I first met Gene after he had facilitated Honolulu being declared a Rotary Peace City back in 1995.    A Banker by vocation, Gene is one of the world's ageless surfies.    He stands out as a handsome Hollywood style of character of six feet five inches.    His two brilliant sons, Murray and Daniel both stand at six feet five inches and seven feet respectively.    All seven feet of Daniel is Gene's younger son.  He  is a world class junior yachtsman in the Waikiki Yacht Club.   Standing around these guys is to feel my puny six feet one inches.

Paying a courtesy call to the Governor of Hawaii, Hon Bejamin Cayatano, with Past President Gene Grounds of the Rotary club of Waikiki. Past President Gene facilitated Honolulu being declared a Rotary Peace City.
