Operation Cleft Completes 4250 Cleft Repairs!

As a Club initiated International Project you wouldn’t find a much bigger project than Operation Cleft.

As of May 2009, 4250 disadvantaged children in Bangladesh have had their lives changed forever with reconstructive cleft surgery, speech therapy and associated services that has been funded through Operation Cleft by Rotarians throughout Australia.

Pictured below is Morsheda, a young girl from Bangladesh who had her life changed by Operation Cleft in February 2007

This project, which has enabled so many children to have their lives changed so dramatically, is a fine example of Rotary in action in the world. Our aim is to fund the 4,000th operation by Easter this year.

Each week 15 Rotarians, partners and the Operation Cleft Manager are involved in administering the project with nine “Operation Cleft Ambassadors” who are actively promoting the project in Rotary Districts around Australia.

Our new in-country Project Manager, Dalia Das will commence duties in February and will work from the offices of CDD (Centre for Disability in Development), our project partner in Bangladesh. (Appointing an in-country Manager was an important stage of our business plan as part of our requirement to meet AusAid standards

The Chairman of Operation Cleft, Brian Martin, visited Bangladesh in March 2009 to meet Dalia, the staff of CDD, to make contact with local donors to the project and visit local Rotary Clubs to investigate International Rotary partnerships and Matching Grants.

His visit coincided with the commencement of a projected three year partnership between CDD and Operation Cleft Australia.

Operation Cleft is a Project of the Rotary Club of Box Hill Central.
If you too would like to assist in this Project or any of the other Rotary Project you might like to consider joining our club and assisting in making this great project even greater!
