President Greg’s Report:  The Week in Review

Firstly, it is a great pleasure to welcome our newest member, Paul Evans to the Club, who will be reading this bulletin from Dubai. The last time we inducted a member this early in the year was Don Sweeney. We will be delighted if Paul makes a mark in the way Don has.

On the topic of membership, our current Club procedures review being undertaken appears to be perfectly synchronised with the thrust of suggestions from the National Membership conference. Our review committee is continuing to refine ideas and suggestions, including comments gleaned from the Club survey undertaken three years ago. I truly believe that this year can be an exciting one, where we spend a little time looking at ourselves as we are now, then considering what we want to be for the future.

Among the items addressed at this week’s Cluster President’s Meeting, it was agreed that we would endeavour to coordinate approaches to local schools to avoid duplication and confusion with Rotary projects. A few of the ideas for coordinated fundraising projects, which will be fleshed out over coming weeks, involve a School magazine (written by secondary students) for distribution in all Whitehorse schools, an Estate Planning dinner, and a “Stamp Out Childhood Diseases” project involving Primary School children.

Marketing Rotary will become a prominent theme as the year progresses. This will be part of our recruitment strategy. The ongoing issue of membership may cause some members to be tempted to roll their eyes as I keep revisiting it, but I bring to your attention a quote from the National Conference that jumped out at me when reading the minutes: “Membership is Rotary’s Climate Change – if we don’t do something now, we’re dead”.

Very strong words, but hopefully they will provoke action (in time). Who are you inviting to the Club this week?

Yours in Rotary,

Greg

Paul Evans receiving his Rotary Pin from President Greg on being inducted as a new member

Report from Last week’s meeting (July 23) by Roving Reporter Bernie Millane:

The opening and introductory remarks both set the scene for the meeting.  At this early stage of the new ROTARY year, it was with great pleasure we witnessed the induction of a new member, Paul Evans. This event is all the more important for our Club because of the President's stated desire to have our membership numbers grow.

A quick count of the attendance numbers today confirmed a bigger number than last week - I counted 24.

Operation-Cleft:  Brian Martin provided an update report and again emphasised the need for a member to nominate for the Ass't. Treasurer role. Although the recently adopted operational arrangements are settling in and working well, it is evident the Committee urgently needs some additional support. Brian Martin and Don Sweeney are happy to explain this request in more detail.

Family and Fellowship:  Lesley Bell spoke about the Christmas Picnic/Train Ride and provided advance notice of this important fellowship event -- the date is 30 NOVEMBER 2008. The Committee needs attendance numbers ASAP so as to confirm the booking arrangements.

Timor-Leste Visit by John Maddock:   John gave a brief report on his recent visit to T-L. His meeting arrangements included time with Prime Minister Xanana Gusmao and his wife, Kirsty Sword-Gusmao. John spoke highly of the work being done and supported by ROTARY; he mentioned the Steel Production facility (in Comoro, Dili) and its corrugated iron sheeting output. He also suggested there are numerous opportunities for ROTARY to provide more support for our near-neighbour - perhaps we should investigate these further?

Guest Speaker:  Ms.Helen Killmier, Manager Business Development, Interact Australia.

Topic:   Community Engagement - Local and International Perspectives

Helen is known to many residents and community-connected people in Box Hill and Whitehorse. Her former role as Manager, Community Development enabled her to form links with NGO's, government departments, individuals and a range of community groups - people assisting people !!  In her opening remarks, Helen noted the strong connection between Rotary and community - both local AND international.

A little over 8 months ago, Helen took a giant step - she left the local government sector to join yet another 'community' type organisation -- Interact Australia . This new work environment sees Helen travel across Victoria, into Queensland and overseas (South Pacific, Thailand); her main focus is on helping individuals – people.  In commencing her presentation, Helen reinforced her well known view that community engagement is an important role for local government. In saying this, she highlighted the fact that many people do not have a good understanding of what engaging the community is all about!!   Having had a rather detailed 'connection' with the Whitehorse community and a wider community base for a number of years, I understand and agree with what Helen said to us today. It's almost as though people expect 'the government or other official organisations' to take care of them - to fully support and provide for their needs. The fact is, however, the community has a large and talented range of individuals - individuals and groups of like-minded people, who have a wonderful self-help capacity. I noted Helen saying ".....what are Communities?  Many people have trouble defining them. What do organisations get out of this 'community involvement stuff’?

Helen went on to explain that sometimes it takes a bit of leadership to create an empowered community. Such an outcome actually helps individuals become aware of this 'can do' quality within their group and hence, identifies the capacity, the power within a community. As a qualified psychologist, Helen uses her skills to help individuals understand their inbuilt capacities and to determine action strategies that produce an empowered community. As she said "some people are waiting for a solution (to fix their problem) to land on the doorstep or to arrive!  What they often fail to 'see' is they and their group have inbuilt skills - skills that can produce decisions and action. To quote her "It is important to use these skills".

Of particular interest was the Action Model we had explained i.e.

Inform >>>> Consult >>>> Involve >>>> Collaborate >>>> Empower

In closing an information packed session, Helen referred to a number of new projects, for both local and international use, that are aimed to rebuilding  damaged individuals; these include ECLIPSE, Stepping Up - Stepping Out to name two. Her final comments remind me of some Rotary language - she mentioned 'community clusters' as being very good - why? Because they connect important, talented people and community leaders are net workers -- this says to me Rotarians make good use of networking in the community - here and elsewhere.

Sergeant Session:

The Sergeant was at his fearsome worst, all succumbing to his powers of extraction. His joke wasn’t his best – but not bad.

A WOMAN goes to a psychiatrist in great distress over her husband. "He thinks he's a horse," she says.  "He sleeps standing up and he neighs instead of speaking. "He even insists on being fed oats in a bag."  "That's terrible ... how long has that been going on?" asks the doctor. "Six, maybe eight months." she says.  "You have let things go too far," says the doctor.  "Your husband will require a great deal of treatment and it will be very expensive."  "I don't care about the expense," says the wife. "I will pay you anything to make my husband stop thinking he's a horse." "But it will cost many thousands of dollars, can you afford that amount of money?" asks the doctor. "Why of course we can," says the woman. "He's already won three races this year."

This is the Sergeant dressed in all of his regalia, how could one refuse to cooperate!

Information on the up-coming Excellent Leadership Seminar, Sunday August 10.

"Some people think that leadership is a trait you are born with while others believe that you acquire the skills through training and practice. However, do you want to:
·       Learn how to communicate effectively?
·       Enhance your leadership skills?
·       Lead effective team meetings?
·       Manage club projects efficiently?
Then consider doing Basic Potential Rotary Leadership Seminar (PRLS) on Sunday 10 August 2008.
The Potential Rotary Leader Seminar (PRLS) is a one day program where you will learn basic leadership theory that you can directly apply to your personal, work and community lives.
But PRLS is not just any training program. It is an internationally recognised Rotary leadership development program. District 9810 is one of three Districts in the world considered as leaders in its rollout.
The aim of the PRLS is to develop leaders within and beyond Rotary and to instil key attributes to potential leaders who will grow Rotary. It is open to all Rotarians, Rotaractors and all members of the Rotary Family.
Registrations are now open for Sunday 10 August 2008.
The seminar will be conducted at the Mulgrave Country Club, 331-345 Jells Road, Wheelers Hill. Registration will be at 8:15am with an 8:30 am start and end at 4:30pm. Cost is $60 per person.
Attached is more information on PRLS and registration forms and a registration form for Basic PRLS on Sunday 10 August.
More information can be found in our District Website under Training Activities.
We request widest possible dissemination to your Club Members and we hope to see you there."
Talk to Secretary Lindsay Mackay for more information.
