President Greg’s
Report: The Week (Oct 22nd) in Review
We
had the pleasure this week of having three guests of the Club as well as the
return of the first of our world travellers (and a surprise impromptu visit
from Murray).
The new faces, and the accompanying stories provided
a bright and buoyant meeting. It was a pleasant opportunity to meet our
successful Group Study Exchange nominee, Carolyn Ford, along with Yusi and Kath (for the second time). All three were with
us because of a timely suggestion from a Rotarian in the past. Please keep
this in mind over the coming week as you meet new friends or old
acquaintances.
Our
Board recently approved the allocation of a portion of the funds raised from
the Farmers Market to fund a joint project in combination with our Cluster
Group (who run the Market with us). The Club Presidents will determine a
suitable project once each Club’s Board has given approval to proceed.
Michael
represented the Club at the Whitehorse Spring Festival last Sunday. Thank you
Michael..

Report from Last Week’s Meeting (Oct 22nd) by Roving Reporter
Ian Port
Introduced by Tony Stokes, our guest speaker was 23
year old Yusi Liu, a Rotary Ambassadorial Scholar
from Beijing, China.
Yusi was sponsored last year by the Rotary Club of
Bangor, Wales, which is in
D1180 comprising 62 clubs. Her host club in D9810 is Bentleigh
Moorabbin Central.
Yusi is fluent in English and Chinese and is basic in
French and Japanese.
Before coming to Australia, Yusi
lived in the UK for more than four years, studied English language and
completed an Honours Degree in Psychology at the
University of Wales. In 2007, she won the title of Wales International
Student of the Year.
Yusi was encouraged by her parents and grandparents to
take on a Degree course in an English speaking country because ‘English is such an important language’.
They also offered to cover her costs which would have been substantial. On
checking the Internet Yusi chose Wales to do her
study because it ‘seemed a lovely
country’ and Bangor was on record of having the second lowest crime rate
in the country although she couldn’t quite explain why this was so.
Yusi is now in Australia studying for a Masters (Honours) degree at the Cultural Heritage Centre for Asia
and the Pacific conducted at Deakin University Burwood Campus. She is also participating in the Young
Achievement Australia Business Program.
Apart from her commitment to study, Yusi enjoys sport, travel, play acting (which included a
key role in a show at La Mama Theatre in Melbourne – Murray Baird can bear
witness to that), experiencing different cultures (heaps of evidence of
that), as well as communicating and working with people.
Yusi said the acronym MAD describes what she is about – Mission, Ambition, Degree.
Yusi is clearly a shining example of what the Rotary
Ambassadorial Scholarship program is all about. She was congratulated on her
outstanding achievements and thanked for a wonderful address that was full of
youthful exuberance.

From Ken Clark, back
this week after leave of absence to visit Europe
with Suzanne.
Whilst
on our 6 week holiday in Europe, we caught
up with two former Rotary exchange students. I have written a brief update
on each of them.
Line von Gersdorff
Line was an exchange
student in 1990-91 sponsored by Rotary Club of Box Hill,
however, most of her home hosting was with members of Rotary Club of Box
Hill Central. Line is from Denmark and visited the club about 4 years
ago, whilst on a return visit to Australia.
In
May, Line married Nicolai and
they live just over the border in Sweden,
but work in Copenhagen.
Line is just starting a new job
which I would describe as a field officer in the Department of Agriculture.
Line remembers her exchange year
very fondly and sends her best wishes to the club and members.
Attached
is a photo showing left to right: Life (father), Suzanne (former host Mum),
Vibeke (mother),

Line with Nicolai, her husband
Stephanie
Baumgartner
Steffi
was an exchange student sponsored by our club in 2000-01. Many members
would remember her bubbly personality and enthusiasm for life in general. I
can tell you that she is still the same beautiful person we came to love
during her exchange. We spent an afternoon in Vienna with her and father, Erwin, who
attended a club meeting during Steffi's exchange.
Steffi
holds a senior marketing position with Proctor and Gamble in Vienna. She still has
a steady relationship with Christoph, who was
with her when she visited the club early last year, during their round the
world travels, although distance keeps them apart a lot as Christoph is working in Munich. Steffi asked me to pass on her
regards and best wishes to everyone in the club.

Rotary Stories from
around the Globe: (From RI Website)
New
Country added to Rotary Map
Members of the first Rotary club in the island nation
of Kiribati
spent a week in August celebrating its charter. On 11 August, RI
General Secretary Ed Futa, on behalf of the RI
Board, approved a charter for the Rotary Club of Kiritimati,
Line Islands, Republic of Kiribati,
adding another nation to the more than 200 countries and geographical areas
on the Rotary map. "Rotary will have an important and positive impact
on improving the lives of people in Kiritimati
(formerly Christmas Island)," says
club president Ruta Uatioa.
"Rotary represents leadership, something we are excited to adopt
here."
The 35-member club, along with guest Rotarians from
District 9920 and the United
States, held its first official club
meeting on 23 August, the kickoff to the weeklong festivities. As part of
the week's programming, Kiritimati club members
visited schools and hospitals to assess potential projects. Participating in the activities were
members of the Rotary Club of Commerce City, Colorado, USA, who led
multiple World Community Service (WCS) projects on Kiritimati
and were instrumental in introducing Rotary to the islands. George Maybee, a member of the Commerce City club, has vacationed with
his wife, Sharon, on the island for years. During a trip in 2006, Maybee became convinced his club should get involved
with helping people there. A year
later, the club launched a multiphase WCS project consisting of improved
medical care, water quality, and educational opportunities. The club then joined efforts with Past
District 9220 Governor Warwick Pleass, who was
already working with RI to get a club chartered in Kiribati. Maybee and members from the Rotary Club of Suva East, Fiji, made
several trips to Kiritimati to help a provisional
club.
Island
nation
Kiribati consists of 33 islands scattered across 2,400
miles of the Pacific Ocean, with a
population of more than 105,000. The three main groupings are the Gilbert
Islands, Phoenix Islands, and Line
Islands. In 1995, Kiribati drew international
attention when it petitioned to change the International Date Line, which divided the nation into
two time zones. The entire nation now lies west of the date line, which
zigzags around the easternmost islands.
Kiribati
gets a large portion of its income from overseas, including fishing
licenses, development assistance, and tourism.
"Our people are used to being on the receiving
end of help," says Uatioa. "With the
first Rotary club here, our members can now be on the giving end."
Projects in the works for the Kiritimati club
include completion of upgrades to the Banana Village Medical Clinic;
construction of working toilets for all six schools on the island;
distribution of dictionaries provided by the Rotary Club of Brighton Early,
Colorado;
and distribution of toothbrushes and toothpaste. "The future is
bright; Rotary can surely look forward to a glowing success with the Kiritimati club, as well as an additional club in Kiribati,"
says Maybee. "I'm very much looking forward
to seeing the Kiribati
flag at the RI Convention in Birmingham."
