President Greg’s
Report: The Week (Jan 21st) in Review
This
is a Claytons Report prepared well before publication date just prior to
disappearing for a week’s holiday.
In
keeping with the holiday season, it was just like the holiday slide show
review at this week’s meeting when we were privileged to see a quick overview
of the grandeur of Alaska.
Most appropriate timing thank you Lin.
Thanks
to a generous contribution from a member, we were able to top up and
contribute $1500 over Christmas to Shelterbox to assist with the tidal surge
in New Guinea
which caused huge devastation and dislocation. Due to the relatively small
number of deaths, it did not get a lot of media attention. Rotary acted
quickly and contributions were made by individual Clubs to provide urgent
assistance.
Lesley
is coordinating a day’s program for the incoming Group Study Exchange team
and will provide details shortly to permit interested members to participate.
Ian
will be assuming my responsibilities for the coming week and I’ll see you in
two weeks.
President
Greg
Report from Last Week’s Club Meeting (Jan 21st) by Ken Clark
Last
week’s speaker was Prof. John Rosenberg of Deakin
University, who provided a
travelogue of a trip he and wife Bev did to Canada
and Alaska
about 18 months ago. They spent 3 weeks in Canada
and a week cruising from Vancouver to Alaska.
Their
first stop was Vancouver,
where they spent 3 days in a beautiful city. A highlight for John was flying
a light plane over the city, with an instructor, as his Australian pilot’s
licence is not recognised in Canada.
Significant differences noted in Vancouver
were logs floating down rivers (timber
is still a major industry) and the number of aircraft with floats, landing on
the water. John highly recommended a visit to the Museum of Anthropology.
He was also very impressed by Butchart
Gardens, which comprise
55 acres of magnificent gardens which are built in an old quarry. These
gardens are located on Vancouver Island, a few kms from the capital of British Columbia, Victoria.
The
next part of their trip comprised a tour of the Canadian Rockies, which are
incredibly scenic. John strongly recommended a helicopter ride to capture the
grandeur and ruggedness of the mountains. Amongst the highlights were visits
to Lake Louise, Emerald
Lake and Jasper. They
saw lots of wildlife, and tasted some of them too. They took a 1 km walk on
the Edith Cavell Glacier, which was well worth the effort. Their return
journey was aboard a scenic train, which have glass roofs to maximise the
views.
Their
cruise to Alaska departed from Vancouver and sailed via the Inside
Passage, thereby having limited exposure to the open sea. Their
cruise ship carried 2000 passengers on 13 levels. John recommended that
anyone taking this cruise specify an outside cabin with balcony, to maximise
the views. The weather was kind with sunny days all the way. Again, the
scenery was spectacular. Ports visited on the way included Ketchikan,
Juneau and Skagway. A noticeable feature of these
towns is that the locals live and shop 2-3 kms from the port. The shops near
the port are for tourists and close each year during the off season. An
interesting photo at Juneau
showed an aerial view of the airport, which has dual runways side by side, an
asphalt one for wheeled planes and a water runway for planes with floats.
Glacier Bay was spectacular
and the cruise ship was able to get quite close to the face of a large
glacier, where they were able to witness ice falls from the face of the glacier
as it melted. The glaciers have been retreating for many years, but the rate
of retreat has increased in recent years.
At Ketchikan
they visited a salmon hatchery by sea plane and saw bears in the wild at
close quarter. Fortunately, the bears were more interested in the salmon.
John also commented on the huge number of sea planes in Alaska. (Your Roving Reporter understands that due to the size, remoteness,
terrain and low population of Alaska, there are no roads to many areas,
consequently the only way in and out of these areas is by sea plane, as they
can land and takeoff on the lakes and
rivers).

Professor Rosenberg gets us thinking about a holiday to
Canada’s West Coast and with
it a cruise to Alaska
– it’s a shame about the Aussie dollar!

RCBHC Medical Student Travelling Bursary Winner Announced
Patricia
Car has been selected to receive our Club's $2,000 Travelling Bursary. She
plans to spend 8 weeks of her elective placement in Tonga commencing 6th July, working firstly
in Viola Hospital,
and then a further period on the island of VaVaú.
On her return to Australia,
she plans to use her own holiday time and spend 4 weeks working in an
Aboriginal Health Clinic in Katherine. Through these placements, she
expects to gain significant experience in remote health care, as well as
gaining exposure to different cultures.
Pat
was selected in late December, by a selection panel comprising Ben Canny
(Monash Medical Faculty), Peter Gibson (Eastern Health), and Lesley
Bell and Ken Clark (RCBHC). We will arrange for her to visit the club prior
to her departure and speak briefly of her plans, and also have a full
presentation upon her return where she will talk of her experiences.
From Geoff Limmer
Chairman District 9810
ROMAC Committee
ROMAC Update –
January 2009:
As
most of you might have noticed, there has not been a lot of action with
regard to ROMAC Patients this past few months.
I
thought it timely as District 9810 Chairman of ROMAC to keep you informed
of what has been happening, why this has happened and more importantly what
is being done to address the situation.
In
2008, throughout Australia,
the availability of Paediatric Intensive Care Units (ICU facilities) in
Public Hospitals has virtually disappeared for International Patients.
In
respect to our area (Melbourne)
the Royal Children’s Hospital is the only PICU facility.
There
is a law that no Australian child will suffer as a result of an
international patient being treated, and because of the backlog of
Australian patients there have been few international patients
accepted for some time.
I am sure you have seen media reports on the hospital backlogs for
cases like hearts.
ROMAC
Office Bearers have had two meetings with the CEO of the Royal Children’s
Hospital in Melbourne
regarding this, and there is support for our case, but little that can be
done in the short term.
Similar
stories apply in other states especially NSW.
Because
the ROMAC Charter is to treat children with life threatening or serious
life impacting problems, a high percentage of our patients require PICU.
Sadly in the present climate we are unable to bring these types of patients
to Australia
for treatment due to the current shortage of PICU Beds.
Our
Region has already moved to bring forward patients not requiring PICU. This
action requires ROMAC to establish arrangements with other Hospitals, as
well as Surgeons who have the appropriate skills and access rights to work
in these Hospitals.
All
this takes time and much negotiation on the part of all parties.
It
is disappointing that this situation has occurred, however you can be
assured that there is a team of very committed Rotarians out there doing
their best to secure the necessary treatment arrangements.
If
you would like any further information about this matter, please don’t hesitate
to contact Geoff Limmer.
