President Greg’s Report: The Week in Review
Whitehorse
Men’s Shed is now two years old. Assisted by Tony Stokes and Don
Sweeney, who manned the BBQ, the team running this wonderful initiative
hosted a celebration last Thursday. A generous turnout, including many of our
own members, local councillors and politicians, shared coffee, cake and
snags, whilst hiding from the steady rain. It is worth noting that this
valuable service would not have existed today without the tireless work of a
handful of Club members and Brian Martin in particular. Thank you to all
concerned.
This week
we welcome District Governor John Barnes for his annual visit to our Club. He
will share his vision and plan for the continued growth and development of
the Clubs in our District. A briefing and review with our Secretary,
President Elect and myself will follow.
Please
consider who you may be able to invite as a guest to the Club in two weeks
when our normal speaker program recommences. It’s time to think and
plan now.

Greg
Report
from Last week’s meeting (Aug 13th) by Roving Reporter
Ian Port:
Report on Last Week’s Meeting by Roving Reporter Ian
Port
Introduced by Chairman Ken Clark, our guest speaker
was Gus Koedyk, Executive Director of Nadrasca, an acronym for Nunawading
and District Retarded and Spastic Children’s Association. The
Association was formed in 1967 as an initiative of the Nunawading
Apex Club following a Foundation Meeting held at Mitcham
Memorial Hall when a small group of parents with children with intellectual
disabilities met together and elected its first President, Councillor Graham Walsh of Nunawading
City Council.
Nadrasca proudly celebrated its fortieth anniversary
in 2007.
Forty years on, Nadrasca now supports around 350 people with a wide range of disabilities. All receive ongoing training and support to
enable them to reach whatever goals they set.
Nadrasca is now
involved in a wide range of industry services including packing and assembly,
commercial printing and mailing. It has expertise in printing jobs and mail
distribution.
Three teams from Nadrasca participated in the Whitehorse Charity Golf Day convened
by the Rotary Club of Box Hill Central at Box Hill Golf Club on Monday 21
April 2008.
Nadrasca was one of
the beneficiaries and Club President, Greg Cooper expressed pleasure in
presenting to Gus Koedyk a cheque for $ 6,016 being
Nadrasca’s share of the
proceeds.

Members Input Corner: From Bernie Millane.
TIMOR-LESTE
in 2008 is a near neighbour in need
of friends.
- What’s behind
the recent unrest in Timor-Leste,
particularly in DILI ?
- Does it have an economy - ie. one that offers
employment, generates incomes and security for its citizens?
- How can it be one of the
poorest countries in the world when it has huge resources of
underground oil ?
Timor-Leste is our northern neighbour, one and a half
hours away by plane. In 2008, it still has little infrastructure –
what it did have was destroyed during the events of 1999 and more recently
(in Dili), in 2006. In simple terms, our near neighbours
in Timor-Leste need fair dinkum friends and a big
dose of private and public Capital and Social investment’.
Since 2002 I have travelled a number of times to Timor-Leste,
visited a number of Regional locations including Dili,
Ermera and the Oecussi Enclave and to various Suco’s, Villages and international borders. Present day conditions still display a
beautiful landscape - one that is interspersed with the aftermath of damage
– damage to the land, homes and major infrastructures. I now
understand more of what was done to this small nation and the challenges
these wonderful people must take on board AND overcome.
OECUSSI
Enclave is a large land-mass, approx. 800 sq.kms
(City of Whitehorse
is 64 sq. kms.) It has close to 12,000 households
with a population of 63,000 citizens (grown rapidly since the mid
1990’s). Apart from a few unregistered sedan Taxi vehicles in OECUSSI Township,
there is no formal public transport system. A 30km
journey can take up to 3 hours to complete - one way!! ALL forms of communication are a
challenge; more often than not impossible! When considering Project work, therefore,
it is a good idea to focus on an Aldeia (village)
or perhaps a Sub-District (Succo).
I look
forward to elaborating on the above two paras for the Club in September.
