President Greg’s Report:   The Week (May 20th) in Review

As flagged at last week’s meeting, the shop identified as a good location for the Club to set up an Op Shop had already received an offer to lease. Unfortunately, the application was accepted and leases have now been signed. As such, some of the urgency has come out of the matter and a proposal will no longer be put to the Club for approval this week. Nevertheless, we don’t want to miss out again, so approval in principal will still be sought once the Committee formed to address this matter agree on the parameters.

In addition to the current distribution of Golf proceeds (a very satisfying time), we will also this week be allocating approximately $6,000 from the Clubs efforts over the last year from the Whitehorse Farmers Market proceeds.

Our Club was represented by a table of 10 at the “Indulge to Make a Difference” dinner for the District Bushfire Appeal.  The evening raised a net $15,000 and a large mock cheque was handed over by Cathy Freeman. It was a delightful evening with excellent food (and wine) provided by the four guest chefs, including Rotary’s Jeffrey Chan. Definitely one of my more pleasant “duties” for the year.

President Greg

Report from Last Week (May 20th) by Roving Reporter Brian Martin

President Greg presented two cheques from the proceeds of Club fundraising events to:

  1. Stuart Williams (RC Forest Hill) representing the Louise Multi Cultural Centre - $4,500 (proceeds from the Annual Golf Day)
  2. Keith Rooney representing Eastern Emergency Relief Network - $3,570.97
(proceeds from the Annual Police Band concert)

Tony Stokes also presented a $3,000 cheque (proceeds from the Annual Golf Day) to the Blackburn English Language School at a ceremony at the school on May 20.

Our guest speaker was Professor Brendan Crotty, Deakin Medical School, Faculty of Health, Medicine, Nursing and Behavioural Sciences Deakin University.

Brendan gave a very informative overview of the brand new Deakin Medical School which has been developed to meet the needs of regional medicine by providing long term placement of medical students in regional areas as part of the course. Deakin Medical School was established as part of an Australian wide initiative to increase medical graduates by an average of around 75%. This initiative was a response to shortage of doctors as a result of:

  1. Medical school places being capped to control healthcare costs in the early 1990’s
  2. Population growth.
  3. Ageing:  diabetes, stroke, dementia, cancer.
  4. Increased disease prevalence - hepatitis C, HIV, obesity.
  5. More effective interventions: cardiac risk factor control, transplantation, osteoporosis and chemotherapy.
  6. Changing medical graduate demographic: feminisation, graduate entry, ‘generation Y’

The course commenced on February 7 2008 taking in just over 100 students at the Waurn Ponds (Geelong) campus. Emphasis is on team-based flexible learning that utilises problem based teaching methods by introducing the students to a full range of curriculum content in a realistic and interesting format.

Deakin is Victoria’s third medical school and is a four year graduate-entry program and the Clinical School based program to commence in 2010. The school utilises online curriculum delivery extensively and each students has a wireless laptop computer that is used in tutorials, workshops and lectures. There is also a great use of modern teaching technology with multiple plasma screens in each lecture room.

Disciplines covered included general practice, aged care, rehabilitation, psychiatry, general medicine, academic medicine and pathology.

Deakin Medical School has been designed to address rural / regional medical workforce shortages with the aim to produce ‘work ready’ doctors for GP and specialist training with an emphasis on procedural skills, chronic disease prevention and management and interdisciplinary learning.

Learning more about RAWCS (Rotary Australia World Community Service) and how can we help!

CAN’T TRAVEL—CAN HELP !

So travelling overseas to join a Volunteers Project is not possible at the moment so what can our club do to be a part of the RAWCS program ?

With so many challenging programs open to Rotarians it is not always possible to enthuse members about undertaking an overseas Volunteers project. Well not at the present time.  Yet the club wants to support an interesting international program where members can see benefits flowing from their efforts.

RAWCS offers a whole raft of fascinating avenues to explore from hands on involvement to cheque book solutions. With the end of the Rotary year bearing down on us, boards may wish to consider supporting their International commitments through contributions to an approved Project Funding venture. These are programs that have been granted official status for financial support and are listed as worthy of additional funding from interested clubs.

An example of such a project comes from Sandra Meihubers from the Dee Why Warringah Club where, along with other agencies, funding for a sanitation project in Nepal has been initiated.  Bhattedande village is a rural community of some 400 people in the mountains of Nepal.  Underway already is the construction of toilets into 70 homes, the improvement of quality drinking water and an education program on sanitation and hygiene.  Work started in 2007 with an anticipated completion date of 2011. This month it is expected that 32 toilets will have been been completed using local expertise and labour. Donors to the Nepal project are “matched” to a recipient family and will receive project reports and newsletters.  The estimated overall cost for the project is AUD 150,000.  Clubs or individuals interested in supporting this or other similar projects on the approved listing can forward donations to The Treasurer, RAWCS Eastern Region Overseas Aid Fund noting their preferred project. All donations are tax deductible.

With only Eastern and Western Regions maintaining their own websites, it has been long over due that the peak body be represented across the nation.  News of the reappearance of the site suggests that it will be up and running by July 2009 at a cost of $8000 plus a monthly fee of $95.00.  It will be accessed through “rotary.org.au” with clicks through the multidistrict activities onto the National RAWCS page.

The newly formed National Promotional and Development Committee will be responsible for the content to be presented with each Region updating their appropriate sections. Our current site will remain accessible through the same site as well as that of the national body.

From Lesley Bell

Hi Members

Please find below notification of the next show from the local theatrical group, the Babirra Players.

Given the wide range of performance dates, may I suggest that interested Club members & their friends make their bookings to see ‘Fiddler on the Roof’ directly through Geoff Swain of the Rotary Club of Box Hill.  Apart being a great show, there is always the added benefit of a bag of Cadbury chocolates with each ticket purchased!  Cheers,

A Joint "Whitehorse Rotary Clubs"  Fund Raiser

Following the success of the "Calamity Jane" joint activity:-

The Rotary Club of Box Hill has been able to arrange for an allocation of seats at "Fiddler On The Roof"   by The Babirra Music Theatre at  The Whitehorse Centre "The Babirra Music Theatre' is a quality local musical company that presents two productions a year.
