President Greg’s
Report: The Week (Nov 19th) in Review
It
is such a pleasure welcoming new members to the Club and we are delighted to welcome
Kath Ronan on board. Each of us needs to now consider who we know, whether
friend, colleague or even by reputation, who has the generosity and community
spirit to warrant an invitation to join the Rotary family. Through this we
can continue to build to the strength that the Club had just a few years ago.
With each new member we spread the load and add to our capabilities.
Thank
you to all the members who voted on whether the Club should reopen the debate
on our Club name. For those who were not there last week (such as myself),
the numbers were 20 in favour of leaving the issue alone, whilst 10 voted to
further debate it. As such, it is a clear decision to take no further action
on the matter.
President
Greg
Report from Last Week’s Meeting (Nov 19th) by Roving Reporter Geoff Limmer
Vice President Ian Port stood in for President Greg who is away Interstate.
Ian had
the pleasant task of Inducting a new Member to our Club, Kath Ronan who is
the Manager Medical Workforce Unit Eastern Health.
Membership
Director Geoff Limmer in
Nominating Kath informed the membership that Kath originally came from South Australia and that in her Youth was most active
in Youth Organisations in South
Australia.
Married with 3 Sons, Kath moved to Melbourne’s
Eastern Suburbs in 1985.
Since then Kath has furthered her Tertiary Studies gaining her Degree in
Commerce, majoring in Economics and Human Resources. Upon her Graduation she
was granted Golden Key Membership for being in the top 20% of Students
Graduating in 1996.
Kath has
held a variety of Positions in her Working Life including Medical Claims
Assessor, Medical Receptionist, Medical Staff Resource Coordinator and now
Manager Medical Workforce Unit Eastern Health.
Vice
President Ian welcomed Kath into the Club and those present responded with
acclamation.
Kath responded saying that she looked forward to joining our club which will
enable her to further participate in community affairs. She said she was
overwhelmed by the degree of warmth of welcome shown to her since first
meeting Members a few weeks ago.

Puffing Billy Day -
30 November:
Lesley Bell
Advised that there were 50 people booked for the Christmas Party on Puffing Billy.
She has cajoled an eminent Member to be Santa on the Day!
Sergeant’s Session:
Sergeant Ralston relieved a few members of their
coins, even though his session was cut short by other matters. Sadly he was
able to demonstrate that not too many members read their Bulletins!
Guest Speaker Emily
Morgan – Global Food Production:
Our Guest Speaker was Emily Morgan a Fulbright
Scholar from Deakin
University.
Emily
stressed the importance of Fresh Healthy Nutritious Food to sustain a Healthy
Lifestyle.
There was a need to care on what we eat, not only the volume but also the
quality and the type of food consumed.
Today
there is more processed foods available than in earlier times and we need to
be conscious on the effects such processed foods have on the Environment as
well as the consumer.
World wide
we have Chronic Health Disease – Malnutrition, Obesity – Too Much – Too
little and the Wrong Type.
In early
times there was a direct relationship between the Farmer (produced) and the
Consumer.
Today there are increased parties involved, Markets, Fertilizers, Waste
Management, Wholesalers, and Transport etc.
In Victoria less than 10%
of the population are eating the recommended daily allowance of vegetables
and only 44% of the population are eating the recommended daily allowance of
Fruit.
There is a significant waste in Fruit Production in Victoria, one third of the fruit produced
is thrown out as waste.
More
information is needed to be provided to the Public on how we can reduce
waste.
Areas of concern include Food Producers, Food Packers, Markets, Wholesale and
Retail Outlets as well as the domestic consumers.
Emily
fielded a range of questions from members.

Kath Ronan receiving her Rotary Badge from Vice President Ian Port
on being inducted into membership

Lin Martin introduced Fulbright Scholar Emily Morgan who spoke
about the link between fresh healthy
nutritious food and a healthy lifestyle.

Members Input Corner:
From
Andrew Forgas
This is the annual report from the
Chairman of Plan. the organisation you all support so generously. It will help
all of us to understand the excellent work Plan is doing overseas."
As
I reflect back over my second year as Chair, it has been a year of
achievements, sound management and change.
Plan’s
child centred community development work has continued to bring positive
change to even more children and their communities and this is despite the
world facing an economic crisis, increased food and fuel prices and the
growing impact of climate change. The Australian public has not wavered in
their generosity and has continued to support Plan more than ever before.
Coupled with donations and grants, total revenue raised was a great
achievement of $33 million (up from nearly $25 million in FY2006).
While
2008 has been a difficult year globally, during the recent board field trip
to Cambodia
– one of the world’s poorest nations – I saw firsthand the positive impact
of Plan in assisting communities and their children to have a better
future. A future that increases their capacity and opportunity to break the
cycle of poverty. I also witnessed their confidence in Plan to deliver on
our promises. Promises made possible with the continued support and
generosity of the Australian public and corporate sector.
This
year also propels Plan into a new era of change as Plan internationally and
Plan in Australia begin new strategies that focus on ensuring the
empowerment of children, their families and communities.
This
new era of change comes at a time when children are more vulnerable than
ever as developing communities must cope with changes in the global
economy; increased food costs particularly for world staples like rice that
has doubled in price during 2008; and a growing frequency in extreme
weather: floods destroying lives, homes and crops in some countries while
drought creates an extended hunger season in others.
Plan
in Australia
has risen to this challenge and our new strategy will help ensure children,
their families and communities can not only survive but also have the
opportunities and support to reach their potential in a world entering
uncertain times. For example, the Plan in Australia-supported ‘Sustainable
Livelihoods’ in the Philippines project has seen Filipino farming families
reap bumper rice harvests just by changing to growing native rice using
organic fertiliser. Providing these farmers with sustainable agricultural
skills and connecting them to local organisations has changed their future
from one of inescapable poverty to one of prosperity. Through the success
of this project, it is now being extended to benefit many more farming
families. This is just one example of how Plan in Australia’s previous
three-year strategy, which ended in FY2008, now moves into the new strategy
for FY2009 to FY2011 titled ‘It Matters to Children’.
With
Labor winning the federal election this financial year, change has also
occurred in that Prime Minister Kevin Rudd has honoured his promise to
increase Australia’s
international aid budget.
With
Plan presently having many of its 16 priority projects jointly funded by
AusAID (Australian Government Agency for International Development) and the
Australian public, this means Plan can potentially reach even more children
through its work. Such as providing early childhood care and development
for children in India or supporting children and their communities affected
by HIV and AIDS in Kenya, Uganda, Zambia and Zimbabwe.
The
new Labor Government indicates positive change for the world’s poor and
with 2008 being the half way mark in reaching the Millennium Development
Goals there is no reason why Australia can not reach this
goal given the record period of growth and prosperity and our sound
economy.
I
would like to take this opportunity to thank my fellow board directors for
their valuable contribution and commitment to Plan who enthusiastically
volunteered their time over the past year. And to recognise the
contribution of retiring board director Brian Dunkley and welcome our two
new board directors Claire Hatton and Suzanne Bell.
For
the leadership and management provided by Ian Wishart, Plan in Australia
national executive director, and his management and staff a very big thank
you for the outstanding achievements this past year.
And
lastly, but most importantly, to the Plan members, sponsors and loyal
supporters. Without your invaluable support, the work of Plan through its
child centred community development programs in more than 45 developing
countries would not have had the positive impact that it has had – and
continues to have.
Anne Skipper, AM
Chair, Plan in Australia
Many
thanks for the news update Bruce. I really enjoyed reading it and
it's pleasing to see that so many members from the early days are still in
the club and working hard. Please pass on our love and best wishes to
them all from me.
Cheers,
Rtn.,
