President Greg’s
Report: The Week (March 18th) in
Review
A
pleasantly quiet week in the lead-up to our Golf Day (unless you are on the
Golf Committee – a BIG thank you to Tony and Ken Rice). Our biggest single
fund raising event of the year is soundly on track thanks to some tireless
work behind the scenes.
Our
last meeting was not the one to miss. If you did, our almost member,
Matthew Etty-Leal provided a truly emotion-tugging presentation on some of
the work by Animal Aid volunteers in the context of the bushfires. Do
yourself a favour and read the detail later in this Bulletin.
Who
do you plan to invite to the Club this week?
President
Greg
Report from Last Week (March 18th) by Roving Reporter Ken Clark
Last
week’s speaker was Matthew Etty-Leal, who is well known to many in the club
for his work in helping organise our annual Golf Day.
However,
this time Matthew spoke on his role of working with Animal Aid, where he is
their Fund Raising Co-ordinator. Animal Aid has been operating since 1948,
although its beginnings go back to 1938 when Alexander and Stella Grierson of
Croydon started taking in animals in need of care.
Animal
Aid currently operates from a 5 acre site in Coldstream and around 5000
animals of all types pass through each year.
Matthew
spoke of the role Animal Aid has played since Black Saturday, and read two
moving accounts of people caught up in the fires and the terror they experienced
as the fires approached and tore through their properties. These reports of
the fires highlighted what the animals, native and domestic, would also have
experienced.
Animal
Aid has been heavily involved in helping the communities affected by the fires,
as their location is quite near the areas burnt. Their 170 volunteers have
done a great job, many working every day, whereas normally, they are mostly
part-timers. Representatives of Animal Aid have been to Marysville and
Kinglake every day since the fires, rescuing animals of all kinds who have
been injured or displaced.
All
animals taken in by Animal Aid will be kept free of charge for fire victims,
including transport, food and first aid. Matthew has received many emails
from around the world offering support for the work they are doing. Regular
updates are being provided on their website www.animalaid.com.au to keep people
informed.
Donations
of food, hay and enclosures have poured in, as well as volunteers wanting to
help. One day Rove McManus turned up unannounced. Upon hearing of this,
Matthew, ever the opportunist, contacted his production company and organised
tickets to the recording of his show for a raffle prize at an Animal Aid fund
raising event.

Matthew Etty-Leal spoke about Animal Aid’s commitment
to help all animals domestic and wild post Black Saturday. We were moved by the stories. Above we see Matthew in his more relaxed
golf gear ready to launch the 2009 Whitehorse
Charity Golf Day.

Members Input Corner:
From President Elect Geoff Limmer
The Rotary Club of Box Hill Central,
Operation Cleft Foundation, and PP Brian Martin are receiving great
publicity in District 9570.
District 9570 encompasses Central Queensland.
Brian
Martin is a Director of Electronic Studio Pty Ltd, a desktop publishing and
IT Training consultancy in Blackburn,
Victoria. He is a former
Senior Lecturer at Swinburne University and has consulted in digital imaging
and training for Monash
University and the
Age Newspaper.
Brian
joined the Rotary Club of Box Hill Central in July 2001 and has taken a
very active role in the clubs many community projects. He was awarded a
Paul Harris Fellow (PHF) in 2004 for his work in establishing the
Whitehorse Men’s shed in the local community. Brian has served as Community
Service Director and was appointed Club President in 2006-07. In 2008, he
was awarded a PHF Sapphire for his contribution to the development of
Operation Cleft as an independent Trust Fund.
Brian is
now Chairman of the Operation Cleft Australia Foundation. He visits Bangladesh
regularly to observe the program in action and to meet with potential
Sponsors and partners.
OPERATION CLEFT
AUSTRALIA
Since
its formation in 2005, Operation Cleft has developed into the Operation
Cleft Australia Foundation; an independent not for profit Trust Fund
Chaired by Brian and administered by business minded Rotarians from
District 9810.
With the
support of hundreds of Rotary clubs across Australia, this unique club
initiated, international project has now funded in excess of 3,900
operations. The Management Committee is optimistic of reaching the
milestone 4,000 by the end of March. .
For the
coming year the project will focus on completing another 1,000 cleft
operations in clinics and hospitals across Bangladesh. The establishment
of self-sufficient strategies to enable the continuation and growth of the
project utilising Bangladesh’s
established healthcare infrastructure is also a priority. To provide
maximum benefit for the children who receive cleft surgery through
Operation Cleft, implementation of the post-operative Speech Therapy
program currently under development is also an important focus.
The
project pays local surgeons to perform cleft surgery on impoverished
children and adults from remote areas. Funds raised contribute to the cost
of surgeons, hospital, pre and post op medication and speech therapy. The
average cost of surgery is currently being maintained at around $AUD200.

Secretary Lindsay Mackay.
Hot
Cross Buns – Orders now taken, proceeds go to Rotary’s ‘Wheelchairs for
Kids’ project. A project of MASH, orders required by April 3rd.
Good Morning Bruce,
Philippa sends her best regards to Sam
Pho and hopes that he really enjoys his new posting, also that his whole
family enjoy Hong Kong. Could you please pass on this message.
Philippa is recuperating at home after
some major surgery at the end of February, which was successful. She
sends her best wishes to the Club.
Cheers
