President Greg’s Report for Week in Review, ending Feb 18th, 2009:

Following is an update from our District Governor on the status of Rotary’s response to the Bushfire relief:

Within the next few days we will have a set of minutes of this meeting which I will distribute to you all but in general terms we have decided to appoint a committee (Rotary Victoria - Disaster Response Committee) comprising 1 representative from each District, and with the concurrence of DGE David Forster and DGN David Alexander, we have appointed PDG Brian Foley as our District representative and we wish Brian well in this new role.

Basically this committee will co-ordinate the distributions from the individual Bushfire Recovery Funds, liase with all appropriate authorities, Rotary Clubs in affected areas and other community groups to establish particular needs and act as a reporting channel gathering and sharing information. This committee will be overseen by the 5 Governors of the day.

You will also be pleased, I am sure to know that $91915 has so far been raised in our District's Appeal.

On other matters, the continued cooperation of the 6 Cluster Clubs in the City of Whitehorse has allowed the allocation of the secondary colleges throughout Whitehorse to ensure individual approaches can be made for programs such as RYPEN, RYLAH, MUNA etc. This permits a more unified and coordinated face to the communities in which we operate.

Likewise, the continued joint work on Farmers Market is generating an excellent cashflow for each of the clubs. Michael and Malcolm deserve commendation for their continuous work in the background as committee members. Their tireless work permits this project to operate with little more than manpower from the clubs concerned. Thank you gentlemen.

President Greg

Report from Last Week’s Meeting (Feb 18th) by Roving Reporter

Our guest speaker this week was Erin Scolia from the Oaktree Foundation.   She spoke about the success of the Oaktree Foundation and the implications for Rotary Clubs if they want to communicate with younger people.

Erin advised us that she is 23 years old and holds the position of General Manager of Communications and sits on the executive of the Foundation.  Prior to her involvement with Oaktree she was a youth pastor at her local church.  Erin’s presentation was both professional and inspirational and left us in no doubt that she would make her mark on the world.

Erin described the Oaktree Foundation as Australia’s only totally youth-driven, aid and development organization; all volunteers and organisers are under 26 years of age.  She explained that she is considered to be one of the older members of the Foundation and that when you reach 26 “you are booted out”!

The Foundation is all about tapping the potential of young people to create partnerships to reduce poverty and to empower developing communities through education in a sustainable way.

The Foundation was started in 2003 by Hugh Evans and Nicolas Mackay in Melbourne.  Hugh Evans was Young Australian of the Year in 2005.

Oaktree grew rapidly, with a branches formed in NSW and QLD in 2004, ACT and WA in 2005, and SA in 2007.

Over the last 5 years Oaktree has raised more than $1,000,000 for development projects in six countries to provide more than 40,000 young people with increased educational opportunities.  New projects planned for this year include one in East Timor and initiatives to support the Millennium Goals.

In addressing the implications for Rotary from the success of Oaktree, Erin emphasised the importance of appropriate communications strategies to reach the generation Y population.

She quoted that the “gen Y’s” are often described as having a tribal culture and trusting only other young people.  They are described as “core seeking” and searching for inspiration.  Importantly, their favoured communications methods are usually online using social networking sites like Facebook.  As well as valuing ‘branding”, research shows that, primarily, their greatest influences come from peers and friends.

Erin admitted that Oaktree itself had not been very smart with its branding and communications strategy but has been very successful despite that failing.  Her role is now to address this shortcoming.

Erin finished her presentation by describing the two key factors that have made Oaktree successful:

  1. it engages young people at many levels but in a totally youth oriented community – i.e. the people they trust and have a tribal affinity with; and
  2. there is a strong sense of ownership of Oaktree’s success because it has all been done by young people – the runs are “on the board” and as volunteers they feel they are valued, believed in, and listened to.

Thank you, Erin, for an inspiring presentation!

Report:   Rotary Southern Region Disaster Support Committee

On Monday 16th February, I attended this meeting along with PP Geoff Roberts from RC Manningham, representing DG John Barnes. We were asked to go as members of the D9810 Rural Support Committee. The purpose of the meeting was to formulate a Rotary Disaster Support Committee structure for the Southern Region (Victoria), prompted by the Victorian Bushfire disaster.

Present were the DG’s of the other 4 Vic Districts (9780, 9790, 9800, 9820) and other senior Rotarians from interstate plus our DGE David Forster, DGN David Alexander and representatives of Shelterbox. The meeting was chaired by PDG Allan Wilson.

1.     It was agreed that Rotary’s role is predominantly in the recovery, rebuilding and rehabilitation phases, although obviously some scope for emergency support eg Shelterbox -120 already donated for Bushfire Relief. Projects rather than cash donations to victims - these mostly will come form Gov’t or relief agencies. It will be a “long haul” and Rotary will be there long after many others have finished their role and the media focus has shifted elsewhere.

2.     The 5 Districts each have a Bushfire Relief Fund – funds can / will be pooled as required.

3.     The 5 DG’s are meeting to formulate a structure for a Southern Region or Vic State Committee, comprising senior Rotarians  eg PDG’s to

a.     Liaise with Districts and/or Committees in other States

b.    Provide the link to Gov’t (State and Local) and other emergency and relief organizations

c.     Provide a State Rotary “point person” for Gov’t and other agencies

d.    Hopefully provide a Rotary representative on the Gov’t’s Reconstruction Authority (Christine Nixon) and DSE’s Strategic Emergency Management network.

e.     Liaise with the international Disaster Relief Rotary Action Group – DRRAG     - for support and resources.

f.     Continuity is essential, so while the present DG’s will formulate this Committee structure, they may or may not be members of the Committee depending on their willingness/availability to continue into future years.

4.     The District Rural Support Committees will now become Disaster Support Committees (a role our District Committee was envisaged to move to but not yet!). Still providing the liaison and support for clubs to encourage clubs to participate, match clubs to projects, possibly oversee the management of the District fund (?), advise on availability of Matching Grants, District Simplified Grants, RAWCS and other Rotary resources.

5.     Ultimately it is still the clubs who will advise on what and where the needs are and undertake the projects – they are “at the coal-face”, especially those in affected areas.
