President Greg’s Report:   The Week (June 17th) in Review

If this week’s activities had a heading, it would probably be “Bringing it all together”. Many members have been working studiously behind the scenes.

The Board has had its final meeting, next years has had a preliminary one; the Changeover Committee has been ensuring all preparations are in place for a smooth and memorable evening (please ensure you advise Lesley as to numbers ASAP); Club handbooks are being printed (a big thanks to Brian Martin for his work here); Directors have been finalising reports (including Don from a wet New Jersey, with much appreciated support from Bruce, who is back from holidays and has thrust himself into the fray); our President Elect, Geoff has been fine tuning his Club structure and schedule to ensure we hit the new year running; and many have been simply quietly chipping away in the background, constantly putting in. Modestly and constructively; tirelessly and selflessly.

One of the final acts of the Board was to approve the distribution of $6,725 from our Farmers Market proceeds to the following beneficiaries:

Mitcham Community House             $1,525

Box Hill TAFE scholarship               $2,000

Eastern Emergency Relief                $1,000

Mens Shed                                     $600

Roberts McCubbin Primary              $800

Blackburn English Language School $400

SCOPE                                           $400

The donation to Mitcham Community House was part of a Whitehorse Cluster grant and the total allocation from our Club still leaves a small pool for distribution in the new Rotary year.

The First Aid course proposed as a Cluster event some months ago, is now being coordinated with broad support and will likely take place during the September holidays. The likely cost will be about $150 per participant and will be held at a local venue to be agreed by the Cluster.

The outcome of the straw poll taken last Club meeting on the availability of members for assistance with an Opportunity Shop was gratifying and reassuring. This is a major commitment for the Club and your Board has been endeavouring to thoroughly investigate all aspects of what will be required to make it a commercial success. Of the 20 respondents, 8 indicated they were unlikely to be available for regular assistance and 12 indicated that they would be able to assist at least a ˝ day per week (3 hours). On this basis, se are one step closer to being able to commit when suitable premises are located.

As I am unable to be in attendance this week, I look forward to seeing everybody at our Changeover dinner.

President Greg

Report from Last Week (June 17th) by Roving Reporter Geoff Limmer

President Greg welcomed all present to his last meeting for his Presidential Year, as he will be an apology next week, when Vice President Ian Port will preside.

Greg advised of a Club proposal to establish an Opportunity Shop as soon as suitable premises in an acceptable area became available. However he was concerned that the club would be able to provide enough volunteers to manage the shop. With this in mind Greg sought an indicative commitment from members to gauge the likely ability of the club to operate and manage a successful Opportunity Shop.

Michael Kirk distributed a new Farmers Market Calendar and requested that they be distributed far and wide.

Club Sergeant Ralston did his best to relieve some members of their coins and told a couple of very corny jokes.

Guest Speaker was David Percival, Chief Financial Officer of the University of Melbourne who spoke on the Topic “Developing and Managing a Billion Dollar Budget at a University”.

David Commenced with the University of Melbourne in 1991 and has been Director of Financial Operations since 2001.

David walked us through the Historical Funding Mechanism of Universities commencing from the earliest University in France in 1180, through to the Establishment of Oxford University in 1188 to the present day.

In Australia Sydney University was established in 1851, with Melbourne University being established in 1853.

Following World War 2 Melbourne University was swamped with students when Servicemen returned from the War.

The Commonwealth Scholarship Scheme was established with a three war funding source:

1.     One Third Student Fees

2.     One Third State Government Funding

3.     One Third Commonwealth Scholarship Service.

This method of funding remained in force from the end of World war 2 until 1975 when the Whitlam Government abolished University Fees.

The Hawke Government introduced the HECS Scheme which required Students to repay part of their fees once the Student began earning money.

David delivered a thoroughly interesting and thought provoking address which generated many questions from the floor.

From Don Sweeney (Presently visiting USA with Rotary Friendship Exchange).

Hi Bruce, Hope all's well with you and yours!
Rotary Friendship Exchange progress report from Don Sweeney

After our independent trip to Boston and Cape Cod we travelled to New Jersey which is just minutes from New York City.  This is the location of the Rotary Friendship Exchange.

We're having a fabulous time and being looked after well by the various Rotary clubs of District 7490.  Meeting and staying with Rotarians has been a great experience - they organise everything and drive us wherever we need to go.   You get to understand so much more of the culture and ethos of the US when you stay in their houses - impossible to do any other way.   As well as a bus trip to Washington DC, we have spent a weekend on Long Beach Island, been to Broadway for 'South Pacific' etc and visited a few Rotary functions.  One fundraiser has good potential for us to use and was great entertainment into the bargain - a "services auction".  You get members, local dignitaries and local businesses to donate a service, i.e. dog sitting, catering, gardening, cake supply, will making, printing, trips to the airport etc you then run a wine & cheese night and auction the services.  We attended one and it was a great success.
We're now off to the UK to visit my family and then on to France for a break before returning to Oz in late July.
Best wishes from Anita & Don
