President Greg’s Report:

The Week in Review by President Greg

As forecast, this week has seen the Club really get down to business in the new Rotary year.

Firstly, Ken Rice and Geoff Limmer represented the Club at the national membership summit and gained a great insight into how we can grow over the next twelve months. Last week’s brief summary by Geoff is to be complemented by a more detailed report in this Bulletin (see below).

Our first Club Assembly has allowed the foundations to be laid for our planning for the year. Details are provided of the current status of thinking of each committee later in the Bulletin.

As mentioned at this week’s meeting, the Board has had its first meeting for the year and one of the more significant decisions was agreeing to form a Committee to review Club Procedures. The initial report of this Committee will report to the Board in our August meeting. Additionally, the Board agreed to continue support for Drought Relief, with coordinated support in cooperation with our Cluster Clubs being the preferred means. It was noted that our Club Funds have been consciously run down over the past two years to ensure that we are not sitting on surplus charity money which can be used to assist those in need. As a result, this year’s expenditure will have to closely track income raised.

Please take advantage of the Calendar of Events on our website to see forthcoming activities. All known events are now recorded.

On a final note, it will be a great pleasure to induct our first new member for the year next week. Paul Evans has been an occasional visitor, and also a guest speaker. As we prepare to welcome him to our Club, please consider who you will be introducing to the Club over the next few weeks.

Yours in Rotary,

Greg

Report from Last week’s meeting by Roving Reporter Tony Stokes:

The meeting opened with President Greg welcoming our Assistant Governor, Brian Tyedin. Brian gave a brief overview of the role of Assistant Governor, which is primarily to be the conduit between the club and the District Governor, facilitating communication in both directions. Brian said we should regard him as an extra member of the club, although he declined to be included in our rosters at this time!

The main part of the meeting was Club Assembly, and after discussions in our committees, the Directors reported out to members on their plans for 2008-2009.

Membership (Greg Cooper / Ken Rice). Plan to target younger prospects – from late 20’s instead of 30’s. A sub-committee comprising President Greg, PE Geoff Limmer, Membership Director Ken Rice plus Tony Stokes and Alison Gregory will conduct a review of club practices and procedures and alternate membership models eg  Associate Membership, to help make the club more appealing to potential new members. Input will be sought from Jenny Coburn.

Vocational (Maurice Bennington). Core projects to be supported will be as in prior years (RYPEN, MUNA, RYLA, NYSF, Fashion Scholarship etc). Our 2007 RYLA participant, Liam, will visit the club shortly. Vocational visits to members’ work places will be pursued, as well as an initiative to explore ways to engage with the disadvantaged in our community to assist with employment and other needs.

Community (Ralston Wood for Michelle Hart). Projects to continue on from last year and be progressed again in 2008-09 include the Schools ANZAC Day Service, Rural Relief, Eastern Emergency Relief Network, Men’s Shed, Whitehorse Farmers Market and Bowel Scan.

International (Ken Clark)

The International committee has a number of projects which will continue on from last year including Operation Cleft, the 2008 Medical Student Travelling Bursary and child sponsorship with Plan International. We would hope that the club will, as in previous years, be in a position to contribute to Shelterbox Australia, ROMAC, Interplast and Wheelchairs For Kids, all of which do outstanding works throughout the world. As the Koko Village Water Project in PNG, and Water Dams and Coffee Plantation Project in Oecussi are now complete, we will be investigating possible new projects in which our club can become involved, maybe in conjunction with other clubs in our Cluster, or District.

Fellowship (Lesley Bell)

Activities proposed include Dinner at the Australia Club, a theatre night at “Wicked”, a Christmas outing on Puffing Billy, lunch at the Victoria Police Academy (4 Feb 2009), the Police Band Concert (with dinner beforehand?), Berbera (?) Players, perhaps as a Cluster event, and District Conference in Hobart on 26 – 29 March 2009.

Fundraising (Garry Randall for Trevor Dalziel)

Confirmed projects are the Police Band Concert (3 April 2009), Whitehorse Charity Golf Day (23 March 2009), sale of Christmas Cakes and Puddings, wine sales, and Bunnings BBQ’s. Other opportunities to be pursued are a Business Breakfast and Grand Final Breakfast.

Assistant Governor Brian Tyedin explains his role as the DG Representative

Sergeant Session:

Sergeant Ralston Wood was in good form extracting the “hard earned” from members, his joke for the week went like this:

At Saint Mary's Catholic Church they have a weekly husband's marriage seminar.

At the session last week, the Priest asked Luigi, who was approaching his 50th wedding anniversary to take a few minutes and share some insight into how he had managed to stay married to the same woman all these years. Luigi replied to the assembled husbands, "Well, I've a tried to treata her nice, spenda the money on her, but best is that I tooka her to Italy for our 20th anniversary!"

The Priest responded. "Luigi, you are an amazing inspiration to all the husbands here! Please tell us what you are planning for your wife for your 50th anniversary." Luigi proudly replied, "I'm a gonna go and get her."

Future Meetings:

30 July

Alison Gregory and Brian Martin.

Subject

Alison will provide a 'Member behind the Badge' presentation and Brian will speak about getting over the administrative hurdles in setting up Operation Cleft as a foundation.

Members Input Corner:

From Geoff Limmer

Rotary Club of Box Hill Central - Club Development – Further Thoughts from Geoff Limmer:

In last week’s Bulletin I forwarded a brief outline of my attendance at the Rotary 2020 Canberra Conference. That report was produced on the Saturday Night.

On the Sunday morning the Conference was presented with a Summary of the outcomes from the various Working Parties that were established.

President Greg has announced the establishment of a Working Group to examine the RC Box Hill Central’s Policies, Procedures and Practices.

Ken Rice and I will be able to offer what we have brought back from the Conference which comprised some 500 Rotarians from around the country, and I am delighted to have been asked to be part of that Working Group.

In the meantime I thought I should share some of my thoughts on the outcomes through the Club Bulletin.

Statistics submitted at the conference showed that Rotary Membership around the World was in decline, especially over the past 3 – 5 years.

The figures were not uniform and in some Districts such as ours (District 9810) the picture looked fairly reasonable.

However realistically if our club is to provide more and more Programs of Service to the Community then we are going to need more members, more partners to carry the load.

Our club was chartered in 1990 with 34 Members.

Over the years we have grown to just on 50 Members, however over the last 4 or 5 years we have seen the membership drop to 35, maybe 36 after Wednesday.

We all have a responsibility to do our best to ensure that the membership grows. Also it is important that we study the reasons why we are not retaining members and just as importantly why we are not attracting members.

For these reasons it is timely that President Greg has established this working Party to have a look at what we do and the way we do it.

For my part I bring the following thoughts back from the Canberra Conference:

Membership:

1.     Induct more women

2.     Increase the Ethnic Mix

3.     Target 30 – 50 Age Group

Local Educational Bodies:

1.     Develop Close Relationship with at least 3 Local Secondary Schools

2.     Develop Close Relationship with one Primary School.

3.     Develop and Strengthen Close Relationships with Box Hill Institute and Deakin Burwood.

Media:

1.     Appoint one Member who is capable of producing  Publicity Material on Club Activities and Affairs, one who can develop a close and effective relationship with the Media.

2.     Develop a range of Publicity on all Club Projects  and Club issues.

3.     Assist in the Development of a Comprehensive Club Website.

4.     Maximise the use of modern Communication Media including Email, Web, Youtube etc.

Four Avenues of Service:

1.     Ensure that the Club’s Programs cover the 4 Avenues of Rotary Service.

Training:

1.     Ensure that adequate and appropriate Training is provided to all Club Members on Rotary Issues.

Satellite Club:

1.     To explore whether the Club would benefit from the establishment of a Satellite Club for a specific purpose

2.     Satellite clubs could be Established to cater for Special Groups within the Community such as:
University Students
Housebound Mothers
School
Teachers

3.     Satellite clubs might need to be subsidised so that Membership costs are set to attract low income people who might be time rich to assist with the Parent Club Programs.

Rotary Language:

1.     There are many terms used in Rotary Circles that are not understood by the X and Y Generation. If we are to attract these people, then we have to communicate to them in Language that they understand.
Terms such as Fellowship, need to be replaced with a more descriptive word such as “Friendship” or “Fun”. There are another dozens words and Rotary descriptors that need to be reviewed so that we are all talking the same language.

Rotary Practices:

1.     Over the years Rotary Clubs have developed quite a deal of practices and procedures that seem to be unusual and inappropriate to younger generations. These things include things such as “Saying Grace” in a club or organisation that claims to be non religious or non denominational. Also the practice of singing the National Anthem by people who are not singers may not be the smartest thing to do, and might not impress the 25 – 40 year olds.

2.     Rotary needs a “makeover” to bring it up to date so that it is attractive to the people we are inviting to join our club.

Over coming weeks President Greg will be inviting comments through the Working Group to identify items in need of review and to make suggestions for improvement.

All members are asked to come and “Poke the Fire!”

  • 17 positive results - cancers and polyps removed estimated to be about 7.

From Andrew Forgas

Love him or hate him, he sure hits the nail on the head with this! To anyone with kids of any age, here's some good advice.

Bill Gates recently gave a speech at a High School about 11 things they did not and will not learn in school. He talks about how feel-good, politically correct teachings created a generation of kids with no concept of reality and how this concept set them up for failure in the real world.

Rule 1:             Life is not fair - get used to it!

Rule 2:             The world won't care about your self-esteem. The world will expect you to accomplish something BEFORE you feel good about yourself.

Rule 3:             You will NOT make $60,000 a year right out of high school. You won't be a vice-president with a car phone until you earn both.

Rule 4:             If you think your teacher is tough, wait till you get a boss.

Rule 5:             Flipping burgers is not beneath your dignity. Your Grandparents had a different word for burger flipping: they called it opportunity.

Rule 6:             If you mess up, it's not your parents’ fault, so don't whine about your mistakes, learn from them.

Rule 7:             Before you were born, your parents weren't as boring as they are now. They got that way from paying your bills, cleaning your clothes and listening to you talk about how cool you thought you were. So before you save the rain forest from the parasites of your parent's generation, try delousing the closet in your own room.

Rule 8:             Your school may have done away with winners and losers, but life HAS NOT. In some schools, they have abolished failing grades and they'll give you as MANY TIMES as you want to get the right answer. This doesn't bear the slightest resemblance to ANYTHING in real life.

Rule 9:             Life is not divided into semesters. You don't get summers off and very few employers are interested in helping you FIND YOURSELF. Do that on your own time.

Rule 10:            Television is NOT real life. In real life people actually have to leave the coffee shop and go to jobs.

Rule 11:            Be nice to nerds. Chances are you'll end up working for one. If you agree, pass it on. If you can read this. Thank a teacher!
