President Greg’s Report:   The Week (April 15th) in Review

It was great to see a good turnout to hear Mark Evans with his inspiring and fascinating address on what goes on behind the scenes in an AFL Football Club. It would have been the perfect opportunity to have had guests along. Never mind…it’s never too late.

For all new members, and designated office holders for next Rotary year, please put 17th May in your calendar. Our District Assembly will be held at Deakin Uni from 9am till 1pm. This will be an opportunity to learn about the responsibility of Club Directors and the vision of our District Governor Elect, David Forster. The list of attendees from our Club will be compiled and submitted shortly.

Due to the small number of proposed attendees from our Club for the First Aid course, it has been agreed by the Cluster Presidents to investigate and organise for a course to be arranged for the combined Clubs. Stay tuned for details…

Five members have subscribed as Centurion Club members this year and I suspect that quite a few have simply overlooked it (such as myself). If you would like to join, it’s certainly not too late. Just let Don or myself know as soon as possible and we will provide you with the necessary information to get you registered for this worthy venture. Remember that 100% of the $100 subscription goes to Foundation

President Greg

Report from Last Week (April 15th) by Roving Reporter Geoff Limmer

President Greg Welcomed all present including Guest speaker Mark Evans.

Lesley Bell circulated a photo of an ingenious outdoor device designed and built by husband John.

The usual talkative Lesley was somewhat coy when asked if the structure was safe, had the necessary building approvals or had a legitimate permit to discharge into the atmosphere.

Nevertheless she has given notice that we will all be invited to Bendigo late April or early May to witness the test firing of this unique facility.

Our old Football Administrator in Garry Randall introduced Guest Speaker Mark Evans, Football Manager at the Hawthorn Football Club.

Mark walked us through his early career as a Teacher at Mt.Lilydale College to his present position as Football Manager at Hawthorn Football Club.

It seemed that after 11 years at Mt. Lilydale Mark decided to look for wider horizons. Initially he had planned an extensive overseas trip however those plans were placed on hold when his wife fell pregnant with their fourth child.

By his own admission Mark says he is a very competitive person.

When he decided that he wanted a career in Football Administration he studied an MBA.

He initially obtained a position at the Melbourne Football club prior to being appointed Football Manager at Hawthorn.

He also believes that he had a fair amount of luck in gaining the Hawthorn position.

Mark was soon to learn that Life as a Football Manager at Hawthorn was significantly different from his previous year’s employment.

In Football circles he had to face the challenge of dealing with strong personalities the likes of:

Joseph Gutnik, Garry Lions, Cameron Schwab, Alistair Clarkson andJeff Kennett

Quite a contrast to his days in Teaching.!

Once settled in at Hawthorn, Mark was quick to identify a need to address the culture of the Senior Players, something that Coach Alistair Clarkson had also noted.

Mark went on to explain the role and responsibility of the Football Manager and the role of the Coach and President.

It is clear that Mark and Alistair get along well together and there appears to be great camaraderie and a real team spirit between the players, the football department and the President.

Of Jeff Kennett he said when Jeff arrived he had a plan…5/2/50000

5 Year Plan, 2 Premierships, 50000 Members.

In just 2 years he had achieved 1 premiership and as of last week the Club Membership stood at 49500 members.

In summary Mark gave us an enlightening and motivating address on how to turn a floundering club into a dynamic and successful club by a few professionally motivated people.

Gary Randle introduces Mark Evans, Football Manager for the Hawthorn Football Club.

Members Input Corner:

From Ken Clark     Flat Screen Computer Monitors required

Operation Cleft is in need of two x  flat screen computer monitors, as our existing monitors are too large to comfortably fit on the bench in our new office. If you have a spare screen that you would be prepared to donate, it would assist us greatly to set up the new office more effectively.

Please email me if you are able to help. suzken1@bigpond.net.au

NEWS UPDATE

The need exists … the need persists A Global Rotary Club Project SHELTERBOX TENT CITY SET UP IN ITALIAN VILLAGE

A tent city to house more than 300 homeless people has been put up in the village of Assergi, close to the epicentre of the earthquake in central Italy. “The village is in the mountains where the temperature falls below zero at night,” said ShelterBox Response Team (SRT) volunteer John Diksa. “We have set up two camps with 20 tents in each so that the community remains close together.” ShelterBox is working with the local disaster relief co-coordinator to identify other nearby villages that need emergency shelter. “We are assessing those villages in need of our help, and will be getting aid to them as quickly as we can.” As at today, 250 ShelterBoxes are on the ground in Italy. ShelterBox has a four-person volunteer SRT there, including Nicola Jones who is on her first deployment. Nicola and fellow SRT volunteer Andrew Biss drove through the night into Italy with the first consignment of aid. They were met by John Diksa who was in the disaster area just 6 hours after the earthquake struck. Australian SRT members are on standby to travel to Italy if required to assist with the deployments.

From President Greg,  Don’t miss this great night!
