President Greg’s Report:   The Week (Jan 13th) in Review

Happy New Year. Welcome back from holidays to those that got them (mine are still to come).

Our first meeting with Doncaster Sunrise was thoroughly pleasurable and informative. Eleven members attended to bolster Doncaster’s similarly holiday depleted numbers.

For those that missed the notification, or who haven’t yet acted, it may not be too late to book to see the advance screening for Valkyrie at 7pm at Century Walk, Glen Waverley. The screening is for Rotarians and friends, but a booking through John Glenn is essential johnval@bigpond.net.au.

Another event to which we can invite friends is the Estate Planning dinner being coordinated by RC of Mitcham. A brochure with RCBHC contact details has been circulated by Lindsay a few days ago.

To those that got off the hook for both the December and January Eastern Emergency Relief roster (they’re in holiday mode too) don’t relax ‘cos Geoff knows who you are and will be releasing a new roster for the balance of our Rotary year shortly!

See you in a couple of days.

President Greg

ROMAC Update – January 2009:

As most of you might have noticed, there has not been a lot of action with regard to ROMAC Patients this past few months.

I thought it timely as District 9810 Chairman of ROMAC to keep you informed of what has been happening, why this has happened and more importantly what is being done to address the situation.

In 2008, throughout Australia, the availability of Paediatric Intensive Care Units (ICU facilities) in Public Hospitals has virtually disappeared for International Patients.

In respect to our area (Melbourne) the Royal Children’s Hospital is the only PICU facility.

There is a law that no Australian child will suffer as a result of an international patient being treated, and because of the backlog of Australian patients there have been few international patients accepted for some time.
I am sure you have seen media reports on the hospital backlogs for cases like hearts.

ROMAC Office Bearers have had two meetings with the CEO of the Royal Children’s Hospital in Melbourne regarding this, and there is support for our case, but little that can be done in the short term.

Similar stories apply in other states especially NSW.

Because the ROMAC Charter is to treat children with life threatening or serious life impacting problems, a high percentage of our patients require PICU.
Sadly in the present climate we are unable to bring these types of patients to Australia for treatment due to the current shortage of PICU Beds.

Our Region has already moved to bring forward patients not requiring PICU. This action requires ROMAC to establish arrangements with other Hospitals, as well as Surgeons who have the appropriate skills and access rights to work in these Hospitals.

All this takes time and much negotiation on the part of all parties.

It is disappointing that this situation has occurred, however you can be assured that there is a team of very committed Rotarians out there doing their best to secure the necessary treatment arrangements.

If you would like any further information about this matter, please don’t hesitate to contact me.

Polio Plus Fundraiser.

Fellow Rotarians, Families and Friends,

We have been offered an exciting Nationwide fundraising opportunity for the Rotary Foundation’s US$100 million Challenge.

20th Century Fox are launching the film “Valkyrie” nationally on January 22 and they have agreed to offer Rotary exclusive pre-release charity screenings of the film across Australia. Each District can hold a pre-screening.

The Film is set in Germany during WW11, please find the following link to the film trailer:

http://www.apple.com/trailers/mgm/valkyrie/

Notice to us has been most limited, so we need to move fast.

Our Screening details are as follows:

Wednesday 21st January, 7.00pm

Village Cinemas, Century City Walk, 285 Springvale Road, Glen Waverley.

Cost $20.00 per ticket

Secure tickets by contacting John Glenn:

 johnval@bigpond.net.au or  9551 4383 by Wednesday 14th January.

Tickets will be collected and paid for from allocated Rotarians at the cinema, not from the box office.

We realise this is not ideal timing but felt we could muster numbers at late notice to assist the Polio cause.

Friends in Rotary, John Glenn, District 9810, Polio Eradication Committee
