President Greg’s
Report: The Week (Dec 10th) in Review
Thanks
in no small part to Maurice for arranging the NADRASCA vocational visit, the
buzz in the Club continued unabated this week. With an unexpectedly high
turnout of members, and guests, the meeting was a real highlight for the
year.
There
will be some publicity in this week’s Leader for the gift from our Cluster Clubs
to Eastern Emergency Relief Network, with a photo shoot at the warehouse and
an additional one taken at the Farmers Market where the funds were raised.
Keith is delighted with the opportunities presented by the gift and has been
on something of a shopping spree , having secured heavily discounted toys and
food. These are currently being distributed.
We
will be able to meet Priscilla Ryles Smith, the recipient of our Citizenship
Award at the Club this week along with the Deputy Principal of Our Lady of
Sion, and possibly Priscilla’s father.
I
look forward to seeing as many members as can be available for our final
meeting for the year and the last for four weeks. Feel welcome to bring any
family along.
President
Greg
Report from Last Week (Dec 10th) by Roving Reporter Ken Clark
Last
week’s meeting comprised a visit and tour of the NADRASCA Industry Services
facility in Rooks Road, Nunawading, where we were welcomed by Gus Koedyk,
Executive Director. Gus was Guest Speaker at our club meeting in August this
year. A summary of his talk then is available in our bulletin dated 27th
August 2008, and outlines the history of Nadrasca.
The
organisation provides a range of services and employment for over 330 people
with a disability and employs approximately 147 permanent, part time and
casual staff across their services to assist their clients. These services
include:-
- Nadrasca
Industry, (A Disability Supported Employment Service)
- Community
Options, (Day programs & activities for persons with significant
disabilities.)
- Accommodation
Services. (24 hour care and independent living as well as recreational
and holiday programs)
- Seniors @
Nadrasca
Nadrasca
Industry Services operate out of the former Australia Post Clearing Centre, which
comprises 8500 sq. metres undercover. Workers at the facility receive a
Disability Support Pension, plus a pro rata wage based on their capabilities,
determined under strict Government guidelines.
Our
tour took us through the various sections where we saw:-
- Unpacking
imported products, relabelling them, and repacking
- Testing of
computer cables, labelling, and repacking
- Packing
products for mailing for a mail order service
- Unpacking bulk
boxes of individual butter serves and repacking them into boxes of 12
for sale in supermarkets
- Pet coffins
and wooden bath mats being manufactured in the Timber section
- Pallets made
to order for various industries
- The commercial
printing department
- Easter eggs
waiting to be repackaged
Nadrasca
compete for work on a commercial basis, and seek to find work that is outside
the normal realm of the companies they deal with. One of their major work
projects is to dismantle old telephones and sort the materials for recycling.
They process approximately 500,000 phones per year. This is an excellent
staple task for them, as they do this in the quieter periods and can utilise
staff elsewhere when they are busy.
To see
the satisfaction on the workers’ faces and their enthusiasm for the task was
eye opening. I am sure all who attended were inspired by the experience. For
further details on Nadrasca, visit their website at www.nadrasca.com.au

impressive facility

Letters to the Editor:
From Peter Dalliston, Portland Vic, to help the Sergeant along
a bit!
A woman walked into the kitchen to find her Husband
stalking around with a fly swatter.
"What are you doing?" She asked.
"Hunting Flies" He
responded.
"Oh! Killing any?
"She asked.
"Yep, 3 males, 2 females,” he replied.
Intrigued, she asked.
"How can you tell them apart?"
He responded,
"3 were on a beer can, 2 were on the phone.”
