This week’s meeting Wednesday 17th Sept 2008 http://www.rotaryboxhillcentral.org.au
President Greg’s
Report: The Week (Sept 10th) in
Review The
Week in Review by President Greg We
were certainly blessed with a magnificent day for a BBQ at Bunnings, with
those manning the stall, and customers alike, in a bright mood to match the
weather. Thank you to those members and partners alike who volunteered. A
very special thank you to Michael for his organisation and coordination.
Let’s hope the next one in a couple of weeks is just as successful (we still
need volunteers to help with this one). A
number of items to note from the September Board meeting included the
dropping of the grace and toast from our regular meetings, the approval of
payment for half the cost ($915) of our successful nominee for the National
Youth Science Forum (Ashlee Burt from Our Lady of Sion) and the decision to
use the $800 grant available from District as part of our commitment of US
$1000 to the Polio Plus project. Payment of the remaining US $200 will be
made immediately to capitalise on the Rotary International exchange rate that
hasn’t quite caught up to reality yet. Our treasurer, Don plans to circulate
the Club budget and income and expenses to all club members regularly, so that
all members can be kept up to date. This will commence shortly. For
those that didn’t get to see it last week, Geoff’s airport bus looks
fantastic, with it’s new Rotary livery looking classy and promoting awareness
for our Club and Rotary in general. Sadly,
we have now confirmed that Sam Pho cannot commit to ongoing membership and
participation, so membership is now 34. Who will you be inviting as a guest
this week? President
Greg Report from Last week’s
meeting (Sept 10th) by Roving Reporter Bruce McEwen:
Ann Buik addressed the Club on understanding and managing the generational
differences as experienced in the contemporary work place. Anne is a management consultant to
executives, business owners and managers as a coach, trainer, facilitator and
mentor on these and other strategic issues facing the professional work place
today. We
were reminded that the cost to an enterprise to recruit badly is huge - both
financially and in terms of lost opportunities and reduced efficiencies. To
understand the issue we need to understand the different generations. Baby Boomers were born between years
1946-64, Gen X between 65-79 and Gen Y between years 1980-1994. Ann
listed the defining events of Baby Boomers as; The Women’s Rights Movement,
Introduction of the Pill, TV, 1st landing on the Moon, Vietnam
War, Assassination of JFK and Martin Luther King and the beginnings of Rock
and Roll. The defining events for Gen
X were, First Latch Key Kids (both parents worked), AIDS, PC’s, The Gulf War,
Chernobyl Disaster, Fall of Berlin Wall, Azaria Chamberlain, and the
Australian Centenary. The
Defining events for Gen Y were, the internet and social networking, violence
in schools , Reality TV, Multiculturalism, Terrorism, War in Iran, Death of
Mother Theresa and Princess Diana, September 11, 2001, Global Warming and
Personal Technology (I pods etc). These
3 generations bring very different attitudes to the work place, and it is to
our peril as business owners/managers if we don’t learn to understand these
huge attitudinal differences. Ann
pointed out that as a Baby Boomer herself (and looking around this included
most of us in this Club), our work attitudes are generally made up of, a
strong work ethic, being process focused, we Ann
shared from her own experience where an opportunity for promotion was lost to
a much younger Gen Y inexperienced person because the Gen Y person had
eagerly promoted herself, her ability and vision while Ann had sat back and
relied on her experience and proven ability/performance to get her The
difference in values between the Baby Boomer and the Gens Y’s can be so
different. Baby Boomers value
truthfulness, responsibility, accountability, loyalty and self awareness
while the Gen Y’ers value vision, a task focus, self management, and
relationship management. It is also
important How
do we successfully work across the generations? What’s needed is, Vision and
Values, New Style leadership, Organisational culture, flexibility, (it’s not
about filling in time it’s about adding value), Professional and career
development, attractive incentives, bonuses and salaries. To
work across the generations we must offer effective inspiring leadership and
plenty of professional and career development. Ann concluded her challenging and
inspirational presentation with this summary “Love ‘em or lose ‘em”. A
number of excellent questions were asked with Ann providing concise and
helpful responses. Ann
Buik provides professional coaching, training and mentoring services and is
available to assist Club members or friends who would like help in this
important area. She can be contacted on 0438 293 049 or at ann@annbuik.com.au. Thanks Ann for a great presentation. Sergeants Session: Well done to
