President Greg’s Report:   The Week (June 10) in Review

The Week in Review by President Greg

It is always a pleasure presenting money to those that our Club selects as worthy recipients and this week, of course, saw Patricia Car receive $2000 as the Monash Medical Student Travelling Bursary awardee. She will be using this funding to work in Tonga and in northern Australia in an Aboriginal community; a balance seen as worthwhile by our selection committee. Patricia will be providing us with an overview of her experiences at a Club breakfast planned for 14th October.

An invitation was received this week from Anna Burke MP inviting nominations for the annual Caroline Chisolm Awards. This is for people who reside or do their voluntary work in the seat of Chisolm, which includes all of Box Hill and Mount Waverley, along with parts of many adjoining suburbs. Please see me for details if you have anybody you believe would make a good candidate.

Tony Stokes, Ken Rice and Ross Mitchell were all set to assist with the Marysville Paving Project on Saturday but the working bee was deferred due to inclement weather delaying the site preparation. If any additional members would have liked to participate but couldn’t due to the date, please see Tony for updates.

Did you realise that you only have two meetings left for this Rotary year to invite along a guest? My how the year has flown, but it’s not too late!

Greg

Report from Last Week (June 10) by Roving Reporter Bernie Millane:

Gary Randall opened this session and introduced the Box Hill TAFE CCTV team. He outlined the steps taken within Box Hill TAFE and highlighted the strong support provided by the CEO, John Maddock to have a high-quality CCTV film of the  EERN .

Our viewing of this seven minute film was a Premiere Showing ie. the film was being shown for the first time.

It was a great display of the fabulous work undertaken by a widely recognized and capable team of volunteers and their donors. Gary was very pleased to tell us the cost to produce the video was NIL, ie. EERN didn’t have to pay a cent for this quality promotional and publicity piece. In other words, Box Hill TAFE donated its staff time, the use of high-tech equipment and the finished product to EERN. Needless to say – Gary and Keith Rooney were and are elated !!

Add to this the fact that BHCR continues to be a regular provider of volunteer support on weekends and a highly valued source of monetary donations. All in all – a wonderful community-based partnership.

Some of the interesting information we heard included ::--

  • 100’s of food hampers valued between $40 to $60 have been distributed over recent months;
  • 180 Clothes Washers and Dryers have been tested by qualified Electrical tradespeople; appropriate repairs have been undertaken – this action is required by Law.
  • The recent Victorian Bushfires have generated s big increase in requests for support – clothing, bedding, food. As a result, stocks of urgently needed items have gone down rapidly.

EERN has a large number of supporters – this includes the volunteer workers as well as financial sources; the latter include Private Companies, Local Governments, Charitable Trusts and the people who donate used goods, such as furniture. Of particular note – every recipient of assistance must have completed an official referral pro-forma, available from recognized organizations eg. St. Vincent de Paul, DONCARE and similar organizations. This process ensures that help goes to genuine requests.

Gary was also proud to restate a former announcement – the Rotary Club of Balwyn provided the money for the purchase of  new Transport Van for EERN. In telling us this good news story, he explained that EERN reveals many and varied stories of our community. Without mentioning names or places, he outlined a few very distressing stories about individuals who faced and are facing distressing living conditions and treatment.

Members will know that EERN relies on an annual Concert, held in the Whitehorse Civic Centre Theatre, for another stream of financial support. Gary went to some length to explain that the present national financial crisis is proving to be an offset for EERN. Why? the amount of dollars people have to spend on events such as the Concert  has dwindled. He and Keith asked members to note this and do more in the way of maintaining and growing this support cash flow.

Before the end of Gary’s presentation, we listened to Ray McKenna, from Box Hill TAFE CCTV Team, explain the Video production project and processes followed, to produce the 7-minute video. As Ray said, “the team was very impressed at the level of activity by the volunteer staff in the Warehouse and the open, honest evidence of genuine community need”. He went on. “ TAFE was delighted to be involved in the production of a video that provides very important publicity and a promotional package for presentation to Community Groups and other interested organizations”.

At the conclusion, Keith Rooney was invited to accept a Video disc. He advised it would be used very effectively within days !!
