President Greg’s Report:

The Week in Review by President Greg

This week might well be called the gap week.  Our first “normal” meeting is behind us and the first
Board (note the spelling) meeting is to take place on Monday 14th. So whilst there is little to report for the week, a lot is about to happen. All members are encouraged to provide feedback to the responsible Committee Chair to ensure their thoughts are considered in formulating direction and policy for the Club. To assist with our focus on developing membership, Ken Rice and Geoff Limmer are spending this weekend at the national membership summit in Canberra. Ken will be back to report to the Board on Monday, whilst Geoff will spend a further week away on holidays.

Following is an extract from the equivalent Bulletin from last year: …Membership & PR Director Steve Bell provided further details of the “Marketing Rotary” meeting set for next Wednesday morning. This
will be an opportunity for you and your partner to provide input into how you believe the club should change (or not) to help you to feel more engaged and involved and so become a more effective Rotarian, as well as making the club more attractive to potential new members.

So have a think about this, seek input from your partner and family – by all means bring them with you on Wednesday – and come prepared to contribute to this important session. This is your chance to have your say! In the meantime, look out for some material from Steve to help you with this.

A bit of dé·jà vu. Not a lot has changed since this time.

Our challenge is to ensure that the drift is stopped. What should be changed? What are YOU doing to attract new members?

 Yours in Rotary,

 Greg

Report from Last week’s meeting:

Chairperson Ken Rice welcomes guest speaker Paul Murphy.

Paul Murphy, Community Relations Manager, Westfield Doncaster Development, impressed             us with this exceptional $600m Shopping Centre development

Report on Last Week’s Meeting by Roving Reporter Ken Clark:

Our Guest Speaker today was Paul Murphy, Community Relations Manager, Westfield Doncaster. Paul spoke on the major transformation taking place at Westfield Doncaster, previously known as Doncaster Shoppingtown.

Around $600 million is being spent to transform the centre into a leading retail and lifestyle destination. On completion, floor space will have been doubled, and new major tenants David Jones and Big W will be represented.  The centre will be approximately two thirds the size of Chadstone. The number of retailers will double to approximately 400 stores. Car spaces will increase from 3480 to 5400.

By contrast, Paul advised that the original complex built in 1969 cost $12 million, with major upgrades occurring in 1981, 1992, and 1995. The current works program commenced in September 2006 when the cinemas were demolished, but major demolition commenced in January 2007. At its peak, 8 tower cranes have been working on the site.

The new works have consumed 75,000 cubic metres of concrete and produced 60,000 tonnes of materials for recycling. The new building has significant environmental features. The 14 palm trees which faced Williamsons Road have been removed and are being stored at Hurstbridge, pending a return to the site in a few weeks. It cost $10,000 per tree to arrange this. (Owen suggested this is the ultimate “treechange.)

The new building utilises the outstanding views available from the Doncaster Road/Williamsons Road corner. The food court and restaurants will be located here with large glass windows to highlight the view. Previously, this aspect was unutilised.

Stage 1 of the project opened in April 2008 with the supermarkets, fresh food outlets and 60 first time retailers opening. Stage 2 opened last month comprising the food court with seating for over 900. The grand opening of the completed centre is scheduled for October 2008.

A range of new services are being introduced at Westfield Doncaster. Westfield Butler, is a service which will do your shopping, deliver it to home or office, and organise functions, etc. The Gizmo offers a service to provide advice, installation, upgrades and backup for electronic devices (mainly computers) purchased through retailers in the centre. Valet parking will also be available on completion of the centre. These services are targeting “time poor” shoppers, who are prepared to pay for these time saving services.

Visit the website www.westfield.com/newdoncaster for further information.

Sergeant Session:

The new Sergeant for the 07 08 year is long time Rotary member (28 Years) and founding member of our Club, Ralston Wood.  Ralston was quick to hand out fines for all kind of misdemeanours with the money going towards the fund raising efforts of the club. Ralston received his best applause when he told the following joke.

An attractive blonde from Dublin arrived at the casino and bet twenty thousand dollars on a single roll of the dice. She said, "I hope you don't mind, but I feel much luckier when I'm completely nude."

With that, she stripped from the neck down, rolled the dice and yelled,

"Come on, baby, Mama needs new clothes!"

As the dice came to a stop, she jumped up and down and squealed "YES, YES, I WON, I WON!"

She hugged each of the dealers and then picked up her winnings and her clothes and quickly departed. The dealers stared at each other dumb-founded.

Finally, one of them asked, "What did she roll?" The other answered, "I don't know - I thought you were watching.

Moral of the Story:

  • Not all Irish are stupid;
  • not all blondes are dumb;
  • But all men are men.

Dear Bruce,

From Lawrence Gerry Via Ralston

I hope it has been entertaining during your reign as the Sergeant last Wednesday. Any fines for me? Well done to Tony for his term as the president and congratulations to Greg for his appointment as the new Club's president.  Well, good to hear that the mighty Bombers have won their last three games. Hope they maintain the record in the next couple of games before the finals.

Report From Canberra on Rotary 2020 Presidential Membership Conference by Geoff Limmer:

Geoff Limmer has forwarded this preliminary report on his attendance in company with Ken Rice as at Saturday evening.

Over 400 delegates have registered to attend this Conference which is attended by RI President DK Lee.

The Conference MC (Greg Ross of the RC North Balwyn) started proceedings at 6.30pm on Friday 11 July.

Speakers included:

·         Rotary International President Dong Kurn (DK) Lee who called on Members for Action in Recruiting New Members and ensuring Membership Retention.

·         Rotary International Director John Lawrence who spoke on a New Model for Rotary.

Past RI Director Ron Beaublen who spoke on Worldwide Trends and Shifts in Membership.

·         Hugh Evans of the Oaktree Foundation who spoke on Australian Society and where will we be in 15 years.

·         Cary Pedicinc CEO Volunteering Australia who spoke on Volunteering in the 21st Century.

·         Peter Ruehl of the Australian Financial Review who spoke on Rotary’s Image and the Big Branding Issue.

·         Natalie Forrest Prime TV Presenter in Canberra and News Editor for Prime TV News who spoke on Marketing our Brand and Raising Rotary’s Profile.

·         The Hon Jenny Macklin MP – former Rotary Youth Exchange Student who spoke on Broadening Horizons.

·         The Hon Sir William Deane AC KBE Hon Rotarian Former Governor General, Rotary Foundation Ambassadorial Scholar who spoke on Rotary Perception and Profile.

During Saturday the Conference Delegates broke up into Working Groups which permitted the participants to discuss and share on various matters pertaining to bringing Rotary into the 21st Century and in particular to ensuring that Rotary can be vibrant and attractive to a new generation of members that will join in the next decade.

The material raised in the Working Groups was fascinating and demonstrated the broad nature and scope of people’s personal preference from all parts of our large continent.

Certainly what works for us in Box Hill Central is mostly likely to be of little consequence to Northern Australia  and vice versa. The challenge for Rotary is to be able to meet these conflicting needs within the umbrella of Rotary.

Rotary Club of Box Hill Central Name Known All Across Australia:

Geoff Limmer has reported that at the 2020 Conference in Canberra quite a few people came up and introduced themselves saying, “Your club has a wonderful project going, we had one of your members come and visit us”.

When asked who it was they said that “they couldn’t remember”. When asked “ did he look like Leigh Mathews” they either replied “yes or no”, at that point he could tell them it was Brian Martin or Colin Macfarlane.

A good story on effective communication and coaching:

According to a news report, a certain private school in Washington was recently faced with a unique problem. A number of 12-year-old girls were beginning to use lipstick and would put it on in the Bathroom.  That was fine, but after they put on their lipstick they would press their lips to the mirror leaving dozens of little lip prints.

Every night the maintenance man would remove them and the next day the girls would put them back.  Finally the principal decided that something had to be done.

She called all the girls to the bathroom and met them there with the maintenance man. She explained that all these lip prints were causing a major problem for the custodian who had to clean the mirrors every night (you can just imagine the yawns from the little princesses).

To demonstrate how difficult it had been to clean the mirrors, she asked the maintenance man to show the girls how much effort was required.   He took out a long-handled squeegee, dipped it in the toilet, and cleaned the mirror with it.

Since then, there have been no lip prints on the mirror.
There are teachers.... and then there are educators.
