President Greg’s
Report: The Week (April 8th) in
Review
Our
Club is now on 34 members. The good thing is that the current members can be
regarded as “core” or “active” members. We still have quite a number who are
on extended leave of absence, but they have all filled a valuable role in the
development of our Club and can be expected to again, once their current
circumstances are behind them.
The
bad thing is that this “real” set of numbers is well off our level of just a
few years ago, even allowing for those that were not truly active members. In
just seven years, our membership has fallen by close to 30%. Very sobering.
A
number of initiatives have been taken recently to turn this around. The Club procedures
have been modified to ensure that the Club is more attractive to new, younger
members. Replenishment and regrowth must be continual but first they must
attend and be attracted.
With
the support of Box Hill TAFE, we will be undertaking a membership recruitment
meeting during May at the College. To be successful, we need candidates. A
list of possible members is not the responsibility of your Board. It is your
responsibility.
We
will be undertaking a membership ideas session this week at our regular Club
meeting. Its success will depend largely on you. Ideas, names, possible
strategy, action...
These
are all critical to starting the successful rebuilding of our membership.
Your input is critical (it really isn’t something that others can be relied on to fix). Please attend, and importantly
come prepared to share your ideas.
Many
thanks in anticipation.

Report from Last Week (April 8th) by Roving Reporter Ian
Port
Our guest speaker was none other than our own much
revered PP Brian Martin who spoke of his recent visit to Dhaka in Bangladesh.
Brian is chairman of Operation Cleft Australia Foundation Trust Fund. This
Fund which is administered by a Committee of Management is an approved tax
exempt charity in Australia
and has deductible gift recipient registration with the Australian Taxation
Office.
The purpose of Brian’s visit was to induct Dalia
Das, the newly appointed ‘in - country’ Project Manager for Operation Cleft.
Dalia is working from the offices of CDD - the
Centre for Disability in Development - Operation Cleft’s project partner in Bangladesh.
Appointment of an ‘in- country’ Project Manager is a requirement for meeting
AusAid standards.
Whilst in Bangladesh Brian made contact with local
donors and visited Rotary clubs to investigate the possibility of
International Rotary partnerships and Matching Grants. His visit coincided
with the commencement of a projected three year partnership between CDD and
Operation Cleft Australia. The purpose is to make the program financially self
supportive so as not to rely so much on external funding.
An Information Dinner attended by some 20 people was
a positive move. In addition, a local business firm - Far East Knitting
originally offered to fund 100 operations, but this was soon increased to 200
and now stands at 300.
KPMG Auditors have made there services available
free of charge. Great news!!.
A Plastic Surgeon, Professor
Shafquat Khundkar who was trained in Melbourne, is one of six surgeons now
performing cleft operations, and local hospitals have now been contracted.
The Doctors charge around one third of a
normal surgeon’s fee.
Brian was pleased to report and
we were delighted to hear that the Easter 2009 target of 4,000 operations had
been met. What great news!!.
Congratulations and sincere thanks are extended to
you Brian and to your hard working Committee of Management.

The OCB Team in Sri Lanka, Including Dalia,
Naanki, Professor Shafquat and Jahangir in the front, and our own Brian Martin standing tall at the rear.
