President Greg’s Report:   The Week (May 6th) in Review

After another great turnout this week, I’m not going to encourage members to bring a friend this week. Instead, we will focus as a Club on membership. What we can do and how we will develop membership over the coming months. As flagged at the beginning of this Rotary year, I see this year as a pivotal one for the Club.

We have recently gone to some effort to make the Club more attractive to new members. It is critical that we lose the not uncommon perception of Rotary being a club for “old men”. There has been something of a clean out of our membership over the recent six months. In addition, for personal and individual reasons, we will lose a couple more members at the end of June.

What we are left with is a fairly vibrant and committed base of members, with strong prospects. If however, we don’t commit individually and together to building on this base, our hard work will be wasted and the Club will gradually wither. Remember that this is our Club. It is YOUR Club. Please come along this week with your thinking cap on and a resolve to build our membership back up with fresh, invigorated new members.

Speaking of a committed base, Sunday saw a very strong turnout for the Farmers Market, where members manned the BBQ and the entrances. I am pleased to say that we sold out of all stock prior to the official closing time. There was good attendance from the public on a warm, sunny Mothers Day. With the tent having gone missing, the weather was a real bonus.

Finally and as mentioned briefly last week, both of our nominated candidates, Brenda Gabe and Laura Amadio, received Certificates of Commendation at the 2009 Shine On Awards last Sunday. Virtually any of the nominees would have been deserving of taking out an Award. They should all be very proud of their nomination and Rotary should be proud of organising these Awards.

For those that might not be familiar with it, the Shine On Awards are an Australia wide program designed to celebrate the abilities and achievements of people with disabilities; people who have contributed outstandingly in a voluntary capacity to the quality of life in the community. Awardees are recognised for not letting their disabilities get in the way of reaching their goal to serve others.

President Greg

Report from Last Week (May 6th) by Roving Reporter Owen Jenkin

Two presentations of cheques were made by President Greg Cooper from proceeds from the Charity Golf Day.

  1. A cheque for $4500 was presented to Judy Fry, representing Karinya Counselling, Middleborough Road. Judy said the money will pay for clients who are unable to pay fees.
  2. A cheque for $750 was presented to Brian Martin on behalf of Operation Cleft. Brian reported that the District Governor has asked for the organization to prepare  district, national and international goals so that applications for matching grants can be made. 4200 operations have now been done.

Tony Stokes reported that several members had signed up for the Gourmet Indulgence Dinner in aid of Bushfire Relief.

Lesley Ball invited all members to come to their country retreat for Portraits and Pizzas on 14th and 28th June (See the Archibald entries in Bendigo on the 14th).

Don Sweeney reported that there had been a strong response for the Centurions Club.

Andrew Forgas attended the Shine On awards last week. These are awards given to disabled people who make a significant contribution to the community. Next year, our Rotary Cluster will organize this function for about 200 people.

Ross Mitchell reminded members of the launch of the Red Shield appeal at Fountains Restaurant next Monday 11th.

Our guest speaker was Jill Weeks who runs seminars on retirement planning and has written books with her husband on the subject, such as “When to retire in Australia”, “Retire Busy” and “21 Ways to Retire”. She is a member of the Rotary Club of Hawthorn.

Here is her check list if you wish to retire and relocate.

1. Medical care - fantastic to appalling (where there are lots of golf courses/coffee shops/vineyards - there are lots of doctors).

            2. Security - check with police.

            3. Weather - can you cope? Weather affects health.

            4. Cost of living - goes up with tourists.

            5. Real estate - affordable?

            6. Recreation and culture.

            7. Community issues - read the local rag.

            8. Transport - airport nearby?

            9. Part time work - 60% of retirees want to have some work.

Why do retirees move?

1.     Escape the big city.

2.     Community has changed.

3.     Kids still home.

4.     Barefoot executive. Technology allows this.

5.     Emi Greys. Australia is popular with Brits, they don’t want to be old and cold!

Conclusion.

People who make the best transition, only move two hours away from home. Do your research, move to a golden pond - not up the creek.

Members Input Corner:

From Tony Stokes and Lesley Bell

Hi Rotary Friends,   No doubt most of you, if not all, would have read about the Make Dreams Come True / Yellow Ribbon fundraising dinner being organised by the RC Manningham to raise further funds for the Victorian Bushfire Appeal.  At first glance the cost may be somewhat high, but where else would you be able to participate in such a sumptuous dinner (prepared by three of Melbourne's leading chefs + our own Geoffrey Tan) and have the opportunity to meet Cathy Freeman, while raising additional $$$ for the bushfire victims.

Let’s support this Yellow Ribbon Bushfire Fundraiser Event, Wednesday, May 20th

From Andrew Forgas:              The 2009 Shine On Awards Presentation Event. See comments on this very special event in the President’s report above.
