President Greg’s
Report: The Week (Dec 3rd) in Review
If you read no
further than this message DON’T GO TO THE GOLF CLUB THIS WEEK. For further
details, including detailed directions to the venue, see the announcement
later in the Bulletin.
Well, we really are
finishing the year with a bang. Courtesy of our Social Director, Lesley, a
large group of members, family and friends undertook a tour of Carlton &
United Breweries on Thursday. The fascinating tour was capped off with a
taste test of a sample of beers (somebody’s gotta do it). A great morning.
Thanks Lesley.
Just
a reminder to take advantage of the early bird booking for the Annual
District Conference in March. As advised by the conference MC, Geoff Haw, on
Wednesday, bookings can be made this month to still take advantage of this.
Finally,
it is worth noting the citation provided to Priscilla Ryles Smith, the
recipient of our Citizenship Award at Our Lady of Sion Speech Night last
Thursday:
Priscilla
completed her secondary education in 2008 at Our Lady of Sion College in Box
Hill.
Over
the course of her six years there she has been actively involved in sport and
House activities and has always been a role model to other students in her
participation, enthusiasm and leadership.
In
recent years her mother has been very ill, and this has meant that Priscilla
has assumed significant responsibility for her three younger siblings. She
has cooked, cleaned, organised medical appointments and done all those other
domestic duties that families require in addition to her school work without
ever complaining or drawing attention to this at school. Priscilla is a very
private person and her commitment to the cheerful service of others and just
getting on and getting the job done, made her the obvious choice for us at
the College when we were invited to nominate a student for the Rotary Citizen
Award. Thank you for your generous recognition of her.
Priscilla
will be invited to attend a meeting shortly to provide her thanks for
receiving this award. Thank you to Andrew for his coordination of this lovely
award.

Report from Last Week (Dec 3rd) by Roving Reporter Ian
Port
Introduced by Ken Rice, our guest speaker was Prof.
Boyd Swinburn, Professor of Population Health and Director of the WHO
Collaborating Centre for Obesity Prevention at Deakin
University in Melbourne.
Professor Swinburn was President of the Australasian Society for the
Study of Obesity from 2005 -7 and has been a Steering Group member of the
International Obesity Task Force since 1997.
With 13,300 entries on Google no one could doubt Boyd’s qualification
to address the Obesity issue. He has published frequently and has often
featured on radio and television – a particular episode of Four Corners in
October 2005 was a highlight A sad
fact is that that we constantly face commercial pressures to eat junk food.
In 2007 there was a 25% increase in obesity in Australia alone, but Australians
are not as fat as often portrayed. The
Pacific region has the worst problem with Tongan people 70% overweight or
obese. Compare that with Bangladash with 0.7%. Both are poor countries but
surprisingly an incredible 100% variation in obesity levels. Ten years after
leaving school Tongans can be expected to be 25kg overweight. An interesting
fact is that church going children in Tonga are heavier than non
attenders. Studies have shown that
socio economic status within society is a prime factor in obesity.
Low status leads to poor diet and consequently more
weight gain than in areas where status is higher and affordability leads to
better food choices.
Interestingly, self esteem is not a factor when it comes
to choice of diet.
Children of poorer parents are more likely to skip
breakfast, receive more pocket money and buy sweets ant takeaways and yet
only 10% of children say school canteens serve healthy food. Up to 55% of
disadvantaged kids will have a TV in the bedroom.
Summarising, Boyd said that obesity prevention in
adolescents is vital but sadly there is very little “solutions based”
research. Full engagement of adolescents in developing, implementing and
communicating action on healthy eating and exercise is essential.
Professor Boyd was thanked for his most informative
address and Lin Martin was also
thanked for arranging yet again an excellent speaker from Deakin.

Prof Boyd Swinburn from Deakin Uni, an advocate for
understanding obesity and doing something about it! he is a great role model.

It’s Time to Focus on
our Families
Dong
Kurn Lee, President Rotary
International
As a father of four and
grandfather of five, I have been fortunate to have spent many years in the company of children.
When raising our own
children, my wife, Young, and I worked hard to give them what all children need most: a loving, safe, and
stable home. Our children were our first priority, and we made sure that they always had nutritious food, appropriate clothing, quality medical care, and a good education. We knew very well how fortunate we were to be able to do this. We were grateful that we never had to say to our children, "I'm
sorry, but there's nothing to eat tonight," or, "I'm sorry, but we can't pay your school fees"
When I was a child, Korea
was a poor country
and there were many children who went to bed hungry at night and had no school to go to in the morning. As a Rotarian, I know only
too well that there are
still far too many children in the world
without the absolute essentials: food,
clothing, shelter, medical care, and education. And as a Rotarian who is also a father, I consider all of the world's children
to be my responsibility.
When I see my own
grandchildren - happy, healthy, and enrolled
in good schools - I cannot help but think of the millions of children who do not have so many advantages. I think of the children who have too little to eat and only dirty water to drink. I think of the children who are sick with diseases that could have been prevented and those who will have nowhere safe
to sleep tonight. And I think of the children,
millions of them every year, who won't live to see their fifth birthday.
December is Family Month. It
is a time to focus on our families, to
involve them in our
Rotary service, and to challenge ourselves to do even more for those in need.
Because there are so many
families and so many children waiting for our help, we, as Rotarians, cannot look away.
We cannot and will
not rest until all children, everywhere, have the chance for a long and healthy life.
We will not rest until we Make
Dreams Real for
every child in every home where there is hunger, sickness, and want. As
Rotarians, we can do no less.
