President Greg’s
Report: The Week (Sept 3rd) in Review
Thank
you to all those that made the effort to further consider their plans for
action within their Committee. Some of the plans and strategies were shared
after the Club Assembly on Wednesday.
The
next three weeks offers a variety of speakers and an opportunity to invite
guests to a meeting that might be of interest to them. This week would be of
considerable interest to most employers, with the challenge of understanding
and managing Gen Y being hard enough, let alone making sure the different
generations are able to be managed and blended. With a comprehensive update
on Speech Therapy progress in Operation Cleft the following week and the
footy breakfast the week after, speakers to suit all tastes are looming.
Sometimes
the solution is to ask two or three guests, rather than just pick the most likely
one. You may be surprised who could be interested.
Please
feel welcome to drop me a line or give me a call with feedback as we continue
to experiment with a slightly different format for our morning meetings. As
mentioned before, the Board is trying to make the meetings more appealing to
newcomers and also to create more social time within the time restrictions
available. Arriving closer to 7.15 than 7.30 will assist with giving more
time for conversation also.
Speaking of change, this quote from Lily Tomlin seems very
appropriate for our Club just now: “I always wondered why somebody doesn’t do
something about that. Then I realised that I was that somebody”

Report from Last week’s meeting (Sept 3rd) by Roving
Reporter Ken Clark:
Report
on Last Week’s Meeting by Roving Reporter Ken Clark:
As
last week’s meeting was a Club Assembly, there was no Guest Speaker. After
discussions in the various committees, the Directors updated members on their
plans for 2008-2009.
Community (Michelle Hart).
In addition to projects continuing on from last year, the committee is
looking to explore ways in which we might connect with isolated older people
in the community.
International (Ken Clark)
The
International committee will shortly seek applications for the 2008 Medical
Student Travelling Bursary. They are also looking at possible projects in East Timor, maybe in conjunction with other clubs in
our cluster.
Fundraising (Tony Stokes)
Tony
pointed out that our club has spent the monies that were raised from the
Commonwealth Games cleaning project, and therefore, we need to raise funds
this year before we can complete our plans for the year. We no longer have
surplus funds to draw on. Greg also pointed out that monies raised from the
Whitehorse Charity Golf Day and the Farmer’s Market are “tied” monies that
must be spent in the City of Whitehorse.
Therefore, we need to raise other monies for our other projects.
In
this regard, Michael is seeking helpers for two Sausage Sizzles at Bunnings
on Saturday 13th September (Nunawading) and Saturday 4th
October (Box Hill South). Our Grand Final Breakfast on Wednesday 24th
September is also an opportunity to invite friends and prospective members
and raise a few dollars for the club. A raffle will be held and each member
is asked to donate a prize, such as a box of chocolates or bottle of wine.
Craig
is seeking orders for Christmas Cakes, Plum Puddings and Shortbread. If
members can suggest outlets who may be prepared to sell these on consignment,
we may be able to increase our sales and therefore profits. Planning for next
year’s Charity Golf Day is commencing now, and Tony is seeking help from
other members to share the organising load of this major event.
Vocational (Andrew Forgas).
Nominees have been obtained for a Citizenship Award and Shine On Awards. The
committee is also looking into arranging possible Vocational visits to
Telstra and Nadrasca.
Membership (Greg Cooper).
Greg stressed that membership numbers have declined substantially from 47
five years ago, to 35 today. It is critical to the future of OUR club that
new members be introduced. The Grand Final Breakfast on Wednesday 24th
September provides a great opportunity to invite potential members.

Committee

members, but all members will need to work hard to make it happen.

Sergeant’s Joke
Who Does What
A man
and his wife were having an argument about who should brew the coffee each
morning.
The wife
said “You should do it, because you get up first, and then we don’t have to
wait as long to get our coffee”.
The
husband said “You are in charge of cooking around here and you should do it”,
she replies “No, you should do it and besides, it is in the Bible that the
man should do the coffee.
Husband
replies “I can’t believe that, show me”.
So she
fetches the Bible and opened the New Testament and showed him at the top of
several pages, that it indeed says …………… “HEBREWS”
For
the uninitiated “Hebrews” is the 19th book of the New
Testament. Ed

Bunnings BBQ’s, Sept 13th and October 12th Your Urgent Help is needed
Thanks
to you all for being prepared to assist at our Bunnings BBQ on Saturday
13th September at the Nunawading store. This location is historically a
great money spinner and has been extra ordinarily difficult to get.
Please
see the proposed roster for the day. Please advise asap if there need to be
changes so that I can make the necessary modifications.
For
your information I have ordered 80 kgs of sausages! This equates to about
800 target sales which would result in somewhere about $1500 profit if all
goes to plan.
Ian Port is once again kindly offering to
donate the onions, Thanks for your generosity Ian.
The
October 4th Bunnings Box Hill BBQ is looking pretty thin for
volunteers, all extra help will be greatly appreciated
Thanks
Michael

From Geoff Limmer, Director Membership & PR
I
am writing to you in my capacity as Membership Director of the Club. In 3
week’s time, Wednesday 24 September we are having our Grand Final Footy
Meeting. Our Guest Speaker will be
Phil Maylin, former Collingwood and Carlton
player. This is a great opportunity
for each of us to give thought to those friends, work colleagues or
business associates that we could seek out and invite to our club.
It
is a well known fact that if you do not ask then they probably will not
come. Have you ever thought of the
wonderful opportunity each of us has in inviting a Prospective Member to
our Club, to witness at first hand what happens in a Rotary Club? More importantly, this Grand Final
Meeting is certain to be a most memorable occasion, set in the Annual Grand
Final Fever Week. So don’t let this opportunity slip by. Our Club
Membership reached 50 members a few years ago and has dropped away to 35
today.
If
this trend continues then one doesn’t have to be too smart to realise the
consequences.
The
challenge to each of us is “Will you bring one Prospective Member along to
this Meeting?”
I
urge you to do your best to invite a Prospect along. Geoff Limmer
From Brian Martin.
A message from
Paul Kounnas, President RC Doncaster
We
have arranged a speaker for Wed 12th November (the day after Armistice
Day). His name is Lambis Englezos, a primary school teacher with a passion
for military history, particularly WW1'.
For
over 5 years or more he has been badgering Government department about the
unaccounted soldiers from the Fromelles battle on the Western front from
WW1.
He
has fought bureaucracy and finally has convinced Australian and British
authorities the there were unaccounted soldiers to the tune of 400-500.
I
think this has led to archaeologists digging there recently and finding
skeletons of Australian and British soldiers who were just listed as
missing in action.
The
Germans had created a mass grave for them. This has now been uncovered.
The French Lady upon whose farm this is all happening has now offered the
land as a future War
Cemetery that I
believe all 3 Governments have now agreed to.
He
has developed a Power Point presentation that go with his talk.
If
this is of any interest to you and your members we invite you to join
us.
