President Greg Cooper’s Report

The Week in Review by President Greg:

Our Changeover Dinner (July 2nd), which is commented on in greater detail later in this Bulletin, was a thoroughly pleasant evening enjoyed by approximately 65 members and guests, including Assistant Governor Brian Tyedin and his wife Jenny.
The excellent standard of all services coming from Box Hill TAFE was maintained through
provision of light jazz music by two of their senior music students. Their music set a tone that was complemented by the fine attire of the attendees (notably ex-member Steve Bell in his full military colours).

Congratulations to President elect Geoff Limmer for running a tight ship and earning the
appreciation of all present for the short compulsory speeches. And an especially heart-felt congratulations to the recipients of The Paul Harris Fellow awards for the year, Brian Martin, Malcolm Chiverton and Ralston Wood, as well as Don Sweeney for being awarded the “Sticky” award. There was little trouble selecting this year’s winners with unanimous committee support for all.

A special thanks also goes to Ian and Judy Port for their organisation of the flower arrangements and raffle, which raised approximately $350.

Whilst we missed Ken and Suzanne Clark on the night, they had more pressing priorities and they are now the proud grandparents of a grandson that was born just as our evening was winding up.
As noted on the night, it is my intention to ensure that we focus quickly on how to make our Club even stronger than what it currently is and to build the membership up from its base of 35. Our target is at least 40 by year’s end. This will require a thorough review on how to make our Club attractive and appealing to the broader members of our local community. It will likely involve change.

It will also require the participation and support of every member.

Report on Last Week’s Change-over Meeting by Roving Reporter
Don Sweeney:

“Dress to impress” was the theme for the night and the ladies did us proud.  Picking winners is for a braver man than I, but notable amongst the ladies, our first lady, Penny Cooper was simply
elegance personified.  While the men had been exhorted to “just do their best”, we nevertheless
had a fine turnout.  Chris King set the sartorial standard, but picking the winner from amongst the men was a simple task - few would challenge Steve Bell’s military magnificence in his ceremonial mess dress uniform (CMDU).

Murray Baird proposed the toast in his inimitable style by reflecting on the origins of Rotary - not the institution itself, but the movement that is alive in the hearts and minds of 1.2 million Rotarians around the world.  I’m sure Murray was not alluding to Board meetings when he referring to the “chaos” of Rotary, rather he perspicaciously linked the energy, diversity and maverick of members to the successful outcomes achieved by our Club; children regain dignity, diseases are eliminated, villages have electric light, students become citizens of the world and the disabled have wheelchairs.  It was with proud hearts that we all rose to our feet to his final words:

“This is Rotary; this is what we honour tonight.  Friends will you stand with me, hold your chalices high…  and drink a hearty toast to Rotary International!”

The meal was, as usual, of a high standard and fellowship proceeded at an intense level.  Many thanks to Ian Port for providing the table decorations and arranging the raffle and prizes. Investigations are proceeding into the high prevalence of black tickets amongst the winners of the raffle prizes.

The annual awards were eagerly anticipated and members were not disappointed when Malcolm Chiverton, Brian Martin, Ralston Wood each received recognition for their Club service by being
awarded Sapphires to their existing Paul Harris Fellowships.  Don Sweeney was awarded the “Sticky Award” in recognition of being an “extraordinary ordinary member

Highlights from the Presidential Change-over event:

Past Club President Ken Rice presents the 07 08 “Sticky Award” to Don Sweeney for his outstanding contribution to Operation Cleft Inc and the Club through 2007 2008.

The new 2008 2009 board as introduced by President Greg   We note the happy faces             excited and ready to lead and serve the club in the 2008 2009 year ahead.

The prestigious Paul Harris Fellow Award’s presented by Outgoing President Tony Stokes to Ralston Wood (double Sapphire), Malcolm Chiverton (Sapphire) and Brian Martin (Sapphire)
for exemplary service to the club over the 07 08 year.

The big Change-over, New president Greg thanks Immediate Past President Tony for his excellent leadership over the last year.

Penny Cooper happily performs the difficult task of drawing the ten raffle winners
in excess of $300 raised to kick - start the 08 09 fund raising effort.

The club members present at Change-over, all ready and willing to take up the
challenges of the new year ahead.

President Greg Cooper’s 2008 2009 Change-over address:

I promise to be brief and plan to set this tone for the forthcoming year.

Ever since joining Rotary, I have had the occasional recurring thought “what am I doing this for; what is our (Club) purpose”? Whilst it has grown less frequent, it has come to a complete stop in the simplest way.

I saw our new banner and the message touched me. It was like a light went on. “People like you and
me making a difference”. It touched the three critical rules of marketing: Simple, Memorable and Evoke an Emotional Response.

We have such an active and dynamic Club. So much energy, and so many good works. From providing guidance and leadership to school children, to transforming lives through organised, inexpensive operations, to providing clean water in third world countries to keeping people alive by protecting them from the elements following all too frequent disasters. From gentle but profound influence to direct, life saving intervention, our members combine to make a difference by unified action.

And yet our membership is three quarters what it was in numbers just five years ago. Why?

There are many explanations and almost as many opinions as members. Whilst our Club is comparatively strong, with a wonderful, skilled and generous mix, we aren’t what we could be. Which means we aren’t doing all we can.

The best analogy I can think of is golf. We oughtn’t play to beat others (satisfying as that is). Likewise we can’t just look around at smaller Clubs and feel a little more comfortable; we must better ourselves; perform to our potential.

To do this, our Club must grow. We need to do a spot of navel gazing .Dare I say it, we need to
change. Review everything our Club does. Consider afresh what image we project to the general populace. To establish how we can make our target audience want what we’ve got. As recently popularised, we need a root and branch review. If we keep doing what we’ve always done, we’ll keep getting what we’ve always got.

Whilst we must continue to run the race and help our fellow man, we simply must regenerate. Too
much has been done by too few in recent times.

If this happens, we let ourselves down. Dare I say, of whom much is given, much is expected. That’s you and me; every one of us, with the generous support of our partners and families.

We live in a blessed country with extraordinary abundance. Membership and participation in our Club is an opportunity to make a difference. Just like we don’t live in a family, we live in our family, you and I don’t belong to a Club, we belong to our Club. Over this coming year, let’s make a difference.

And now to make a start on this objective, allow me to present our new Board.
