President Greg’s Report:

We were greatly saddened by the passing of Trevor and Rosemary Dalziel’s daughter Melanie this week. As previously circulated, her funeral is on Monday in Narre Warren. Whilst death is hard enough to deal with, no parent wants to even think about seeing one of their children pass away before themselves. Our hearts break for them and our thoughts and prayers are with them.

The BBQ at Bunnings was a great success and once we got Andrew onto the cooking, with Michelle launching a charm offensive onto the passing kids, sales kicked up. Michael will again provide a full report on the financials on Wednesday. Thank you again not only to our members, but particularly to partners for their support to this critical fundraiser.

Congratulations again to Lindsay for his nomination as President nominee for 2010-11 and also to Ian for his nomination as Secretary for next year.

We have three interesting speakers coming up, so which one will your guest be coming to?

President Greg

Report from last week’s meeting (Oct 1st) by Roving Reporter  Bruce McEwen:

It is always a delight to have one of our own members address the Club, and even more so when that member comes with such a long standing passion and commitment for the small and struggling nation of Timor-Leste.

Bernie Millane’s presentation was introduced by Owen Jenkin who made the point that Bernie’s work and achievements across a wide area of interest has provided many entries from a recent “Google” search.  Bernie helped found the Whitehorse Community Friends of Oecussi Group in 2001, and has provided enormous personal and practical project support and encouragement to the Oecussi Community ever since.

Bernie spoke of his experiences during his recent 2 week visit (his fourth) to East Timor, and the positive changes and progress noted since his last visit in November 04. He explained to us that the UN has been returned during this last year to provide much needed security and support for local policing due to lawlessness caused often by the large number of rural youth looking for work in the capital Dili and as a result of  the assassination attempt on the President, Ramos Horta.

Timor-Leste has been dominated for most of it’s existence by the Dutch, Portuguese and Indonesians since being founded in 1514, maybe one reason why they are finding it a challenge to now stand up and survive on their own two feet.

Bernie’s visit included attending a 3 day Local Government and Friendship Groups Conference held at the impressive new Foreign Affairs Building in Dili, it has taken 4 years of planning to finally bring this conference to fruition, many of the important leaders were there, and good outcomes for the future of Timor–Leste are expected.

Bernie again visited the Oecussi enclave for 7 days travelling by UN Helicopter organised by his friend Jorge Teme the Special Secretary of State for Oecussi.

Bernie outlined a long list of impressive projects undertaken by the Whitehorse Friends of Oecussi group within the enclave, these include:

  • Youth Centre - Reconstruction and fit-out $10,000.
  • Youth Centre -10 new Computer systems.
  • Musical Instruments from Blackburn High School.
  • Health and Nutrition Program for young mothers and their children.
  • FSP -- San Antonius Co-Ed. School and SION Girls College, Box Hill.
  • Solar Power Units - 7 to date and an order for 1 in 2008/2009.  (Rotary Support)
  • QUESI Primary School - new 3-room building and Soccer Team gear.
  • Purchase and sale of TAIS (garments).
  • Small Business Training for two young women.
  • Two Coffee Plantations. (Rotary Support)
  • One Water Dam. (Rotary Support)
  • Clothes for school children - donated by Victorian schools.
  • Support from numerous community groups, incl. ROTARY.

Bernie shared how he visited a number of these projects including the Rotary supported coffee Plantation and Water dam sites, he also visited the San Antonius Co-Ed college and was so impressed and moved when on Saturday morning numbers of the school students were busy sweeping the dusty school grounds with tree branches – the only tools available to them.

Bernie spoke of the many hardships faced by the people and challenged us as a club to look at further support for projects in the Oecussi enclave; he has made available a 6 page A4 handout detailing 16 exciting projects. Members are encouraged to read this interesting and challenging list of opportunities.

We appreciated Bernie sharing from his heart his experiences from this recent trip and for filling us in with the many severe issues faced by the people of this tiny nation, while also providing for us practical project opportunities to enable us to help make a positive difference in their lives in the months and years ahead. – remember they are our friends and close neighbors.

For a full account of Bernie’s address please read the handout provided.

ALKIRA NEEDS YOUR HELP!

Alkira’s Work Skills would greatly welcome some assistance doing a special task called the ‘Bottle Cap Job’. It involves putting a small piece of cardboard inside a shampoo cap. The commercial contract gives work experience to people who attend Alkira and earns the organisation some extra income.

We are asking volunteers to either assist a person with an intellectual disability to do the task or to work individually within the workshop, to get as many caps done as possible.

If you are able to help anytime between 8.30am and 3.00pm, Monday to Friday, please phone myself or Desma at Alkira.

We would really appreciate 1 or more hours work.

Ambulance Victoria invites you to take ‘4 Steps for Life’

Through an innovative free program named the 4 Steps for Life, Ambulance Victoria aims to build awareness and confidence in performing CPR through fun group learning at local clubs, groups and community houses.  Your community group, club or organisation is invited to send representatives to this session and to receive a free resource kit for your group to keep and learn CPR (resuscitation) through the 4 Steps for Life.

Each kit contains a 20 minute video which replicates a real triple zero (000) call, training aids to support practise and written information.

Location:       The Avenue Neighbourhood House, Eley Park Community Centre, 87 Eley Rd, Blackburn South

Date:           Thursday 13th November, 2008 , Time:           1.30pm - 2.30pm

RSVP:           The Avenue, 9808 2000

Places limited - bookings essential. Please bring a pillow for the practical exercises

Each year in Victoria more than 3,500 people suffer from a cardiac arrest: most occur in the family home. Tragically very few receive life saving CPR.  Learn CPR to help save your loved ones.
