President Greg’s
Report: The Week (April 1st) in
Review
It’s
been a busy couple of weeks for many in the Club. Hot on the heels of the
tremendously successful Golf Day, a significant clutch of members (as good a
word as any for multiple members) headed off to beautiful Hobart for the Annual District Conference.
We
had a wonderful social time there and even did an evening trek through some
of the nicest homes in Battery Point (a little glimpse of England) on
our way out to a lovely Italian restaurant one evening. A report on the
conference appears later in the Bulletin
No
sooner were our feet back on the mainland than the Police Band Concert was
upon us. Yet another successful event is now behind us thanks to a tremendous
effort from our membership (in particular, a big thanks to Garry). The
evening went off without a hitch on Friday night and many thousands of
dollars were raised for Eastern Emergency Relief and a number of other
charities to be nominated by the Club.
This
coming week will see a number of missing members return from holidays and
leave of absence. Not a bad week to invite that guest you’ve been thinking
about?
President
Greg
Report from Last Week (April 1st) by Roving Reporter Geoff Limmer
President
Greg welcomed our Guest Speaker as well as all present.
Garry
Randall reported that there were 90 tickets remaining for the Police concert
and he would appreciate some assistance from club members in selling raffle
tickets.
President
Greg and Geoff Limmer reported on
the Hobart Conference.
There
were 9 members from our club and a great time was had by all.
The
keynote speakers were of a high calibre, and there were great opportunities
to meet and exchange information from members within the District.
Bernie
Millane reported that he had arranged a Tour of the County Court for 9.30am
on Wednesday 15 April. Those interested should contact Bernie ASAP.
Tony Stokes circulated some
hand crafted “Thank you Cards” from the Strathbogie Primary School expressing
appreciation for the Christmas Hampers delivered to the School just prior to
Christmas.
Ralston Wood reported that he
had received a letter from Lawrence Gerry advising that his Community in Papua New Guinea
has raised $3000 for the Victorian Bushfire Appeal.
Our
Guest Speaker was C V Prakash who spoke about an extraordinary project that
has the potential to eliminate World Hunger.
The
Project is aimed at “Feeding the Worlds’s Poor” by growing food with
Hydroponics.
In
India
there are 50 million people who are hungry.
C
V believes the Hydroponics provides an opportunity to solve the Hunger
Problem in a cost effective way.
A
20 square metre Hydroponic
Garden will provide 2 kilograms
of Vegetables daily which can feed 6 – 8 people daily.
C
V ‘s project is environmentally sound and does not utilise any chemicals or
pesticides.
Garlic
spray is used to control pests, and used empty Coke bottles are painted black
and filled with sand. These devices absorb the hot sun during the day and
disperse the heat during the night which maintains a warmth area throughout
the evening.
C
V claimed that it took 3 days to train the locals in establishing a Hydroponic Garden.
It
costs $200AU to establish a 20 square metre garden.
The
Project seems so simple and cost effective and one wonders why this type of
activity has not been trialled years ago.
One
wonders whether our club, and perhaps others should join together to fund the
establishment of a number of these gardens which provide sustenance to the
world’s poor and needy.
.
CV Prakash presented one of the most visionary projects imaginable -
feeding 50 Million desperately hungry Indian Families for just $US150 per
family (Mum Dad and 4 kids) for 12 months. If ever there was a project that
would excite Rotary Club’s world wide this must be it. An answer to world
hunger, what a vision. Thanks for
sharing it with us CV. See examples of
lettuces, Cauliflowers and Tomatoes grown in just 10 weeks since the Pet
Bhuro Simplified Hydroponics project in Bangalore
was launched.

Members Input Corner:
Whitehorse Charity Golf Day Report by Tony
Stokes
At
12.30pm on Monday 23rd March, twenty teams representing
businesses, not-for-profits and other local organizations hit off in a
shot-gun start in the annual Whitehorse Charity Golf Day held at the Box
Hill Golf Club. The event proceeds will go to supporting the work of four
organizations located within the City of Whitehorse:
Louise Multicultural Community Centre, NADRASCA, Karinya Counselling Centre
and Blackburn
English Language
School.
The
event was again generously supported by the City of Whitehorse, and the Gala Dinner after the
golf was attended by Crs Sharon Ellis, Mark Lane and Andrew Munroe. The
Dinner capped off the day for players and their partners, and was
highlighted by a lively bracket from the popular opera and theatre
performers Suzanne Johnston and Judi Connelli.
The
day was a great success with approximately $20,000 being raised all of
which will go to support the work of the 4 beneficiary organizations. Endorsements for the day included comments such as
“…a fantastically
organized day! I know my team had a ball”.
The
Organizing Committee thanks the City of Whitehorse, Box Hill Golf Club and all
sponsors, supporters, players, prize donors and volunteers without whose
generous support the event could not happen. In particular, thanks to club
members Brian McPhail, Greg Cooper and Ian Port for entering teams, Ken
Rice, Don Sweeney and Craig Hoath for playing and Brian
McPhail, Vici Funnell, Ken Rice, Craig Hoath, Ian Port, Rob Collier, Keith
Rooney and Tony Stokes
for generously donating auction or raffle prizes. And a particular thanks
to Matthew Etty-Leal for his time, expertise, auction donation of a weekend
at his holiday house, and for arranging for Suzanne and Judi to entertain
us. Also thanks to Chris Ricketson for his help on the day.
Already
plans are being formulated for the 2010 Whitehorse Charity Golf Day
scheduled for Monday 22nd March 2010.

From President Greg Cooper,

From Bernie Millane
The 9810 State Conference No. 27
- for Victorian ROTARIANS --- A Personal Perspective
What follows
is an overview of the Conference content and few comments on the week Eva
and I spent in beautiful Tasmania.
First -- Tasmania is well worth a visit. We
arrived in Devonport, drove our car to Stanley
(far-NorthWest corner of Tas.), stopped a night and next day, drove south
to Hobart -
via the Central Midlands Hwy., past the Lakes -- what a beautiful place
! Our accommodation for four nights at the Zero-Davey Hotel
was good and only a short distance from the Grand Chancellor Hotel -
the venue for the Conference. The camaraderie between the RCBHC attendees
was first-class. We dined out together and had a great Thursday night. I
even played 18 Holes of Golf at Claremont Golf Course -- a challenging
afternoon ! Some of us joined 100's of people at the Salamanca Market on
the Saturday morning - the atmosphere, food, gift stalls was what I
expected - excellent; I even bought a fabulous CD ( featuring a local
guitarist). Following the Conference, Eva and I journeyed up the east coast
- thru Bicheno - and stopped overnight in St. Helen's. Next day, we arrived
in Devonport, boarded the Spirit of Tasmania and arrived home at Station
Pier the next morning - Tuesday. All in all, a terrific 7 days. I'd go
again - anytime !!
Second -- the Conference. I'll try to keep
this brief and to the point.
I attended
the Shepparton and Albury conferences and to be frank, I feel they
were better, more interesting events.
Hobart attracted more than 600 people - a
very good attendance. The Opening Ceremony was held on the Friday
evening. Numerous Rotary activities and Projects provided information
stalls in The House of Friendship and our Operation Cleft stall was well
stocked with info sheets, badges and stickers and, staffed over the
3 days. In fact, O.C. was highly mentioned during the Conference.
Special focus was directed to PHF and First Time attendees with a luncheon
held on Sat. 28 March. I was impressed with the Formal Opening Welcome
speech made by a local Indigenous leader. As well as many other key
presenters, I believe District Governor John Barnes and his wife, Gaye did
a great job throughout the Conference - they were entertaining (who could
forget their Tango?) and generous in their many presentations.
Not all
formal speeches were of a high standard. They referred to important
topics however some were difficult to understand - ie. very
technical in their content. The Flag Parade for countries
participating in the Youth Exchange Program was well appreciated, the Club
Roll Call confirmed for us how diverse and important are our Vic.
Clubs, the session on 'Called To Higher Service' was very moving,
For me, one
of the two most memorable Presentations came from DGN Deepa Willingham,
International Champion of Underprivileged. She launched a children's
organisation for young girls in the slums of Kolkata (formerly Calcutta); this
initiative has resulted in a number of similar Groups to be formed.
The second
Presentation came from PDG Bernie Rogers, The Rotary Foundation Polio
Eradication Program.
In brief,
Bernie was diagnosed with Polio at the age of 10 and for years he had to
contend with this wicked disease. He was very sincere and emotional
throughout the presentation. Whatever the reason - heaven or otherwise -
Bernie overcame the disease, he became a career Pilot in Wales and for some
12 years has devoted considerable time to eliminate world diseases, in
particular - Polio. His passion and commitment with this Rotary Polio
Eradication Program was evident.
A number of
other keynote speakers impressed me as well -- of note I mention
Louise Yaxley, Cycling Champion, Dominic Alafaci, Financial Advisor (not as
convincing as Kevin Bailey!), Walter Mikac - the Inspirational man with the
Inspirational Message ( Walter lost his wife and two young children at the
Port Arthur Massacre in 1996).
Of particular
note was the presentation by the 2009 Buenos
Aires, Argentina
GSE Team., led by team leader PP Andrew Brownlie. I was very impressed with
our sponsored team member, Carolyn Ford from Moore's-Legal; Carolyn spoke
superbly and will be a valuable speaker for our Club later this year. She
has great talent and will be a fine leader. Not only Carolyn -
Elizabeth Sampson from the Whitehorse Community Arts Centre and Ianthie
Mendis from Box Hill TAFE are also members of this GSE Team. Whitehorse, as such, is
well represented.
I could go
on -- but won't !! Suffice to say, we met and listened to a diverse
range of people - Rotarians and non-Rotarians.
The final
'fun' event for me was the Gala Ball "Hollywood Comes to Hobart". Wonderful
company, high quality menu for dinner, excellent Music and Singers -- all
up ::: a memorable evening.
I wonder
what the Geelong Conference, Feb 26 to 28, 2010 will offer us ???
