President Greg’s
Report: The Week (April 29th) in
Review
Another
interesting meeting behind us with a good turnout by members and guests.
Whilst the topic will have had some of us squirming a bit, Wolfgang Schoch
did a great job of presenting a vital topic.
Over
the next few weeks, we will be presenting the proceeds of the Charity Golf
Day to the beneficiaries. It will be most gratifying to see the cheques being
accepted by these local deserving charities.
Elizabeth
Hughes was presented with the Rotary Club of Box Hill Central Fashion
Scholarship by Box Hill TAFE at the Centre for Media , Design & Arts
Graduation Ceremony last Thursday night having been selected by a panel of
fashion coordinators.
Our
Club banners caught up with Carolyn in Argentina about one week ago, so
she will be better armed for the last four weeks of her trip. We can look
forward to her briefing on her return, where I’m sure the temporary shortage
of banners will have formed part of the mosaic of her trip.
Next
week details will be provided of today’s Shine On Awards where our two
candidates, Laura Amadio and Brenda Gabe, received
commendations
Don’t
forget that the District Assembly is being held on Sunday 15th.
This is a valuable information day for all members who are either holding
positions next Rotary year or who have recently joined the Club.
Who
are you inviting to our meeting this week?
.
President
Greg
Report from Last Week (April 29th) by Roving Reporter Tony Stokes
Lesley
Bell highlighted to members the Yellow Ribbon Bushfire Fundraising Dinner to
be held on Wednesday 20th May and organized by the Rotary Club of Manningham.
She reminded us of the fantastic culinary opportunity it offers as well as
supporting the District Rotary Bushfire Relief Fund. A commitment sheet was
circulated. The flyer appears elsewhere in the Bulletin.
Don
Sweeney introduced the guest speaker, Wolfgang Schoch, a National Men’s
Health Ambassador, who spoke on the subjects of prostate cancer and
incontinence awareness, prevention and treatment. Prior to joining the
speaking circuit, Wolfgang had been a chemical engineer with Hoechst and had
experienced prostate cancer himself, thankfully now in remission.
The
Ambassador Speaker Program is an initiative of the Federal Government Dept of
Health and Ageing, supported by many Gov’t and Community partners, including
Rotary International. Its objective is to reach 50,000 Australian men with
the message.
Wolfgang
told us that prostate cancer is the most common cancer in men after skin
cancer, and each year in Australia,
2,900 men die from the disease, equal to the number of women who die from
breast cancer. He reminded us that early detection and treatment is vital in
successfully overcoming prostate cancer, but there are usually no symptoms of
early onset prostate enlargement or cancer, so regular screening is key. The
usual tests are the PSA blood test and/or the Digital Rectal Examination. He
also pointed out that prostate enlargement and even a high PSA reading do not
necessarily mean cancer, but any abnormal trend or reading should be further
investigated. Apparently, an enlarged prostate is not uncommon among cyclists
due to the seating position, but this is not a reason for putting away the
bike! For men over 50 (over 40 if a family history), annual screening is
highly recommended. This can be arranged through your GP.
Risk
factors for prostate cancer include being male (obviously), family history
(genetic), ethnicity, vocation and lifestyle (exercise and diet). The
mortality rate is unfortunately higher in rural areas due to reduced access
to screening and treatment facilities.
Incontinence,
both urinary and bowel, is also very prevalent and may or may not be linked
to prostate cancer. There are exercise programs and many products available
to assist with managing this condition, and in some instances, Government
assistance is available.
Support
groups are in place for both prostate and incontinence sufferers. Useful
websites are www.prostate.org.au, www.continence.org.au,
www.continence.health.gov.au
Overall,
an informative presentation on two important topics and our thanks to Don and
Anita Sweeney for arranging for Wolfgang to address the meeting.

Wolfgang Schoch highlighted two most important men’s
health issues, we were all listening, but will we men take action!

Members Input Corner:
From
Tony Stokes and Lesley Bell
Hi
Rotary Friends, No
doubt most of you, if not all, would have read about the Make Dreams Come True / Yellow Ribbon fundraising dinner being organised by
the RC Manningham to raise further funds for the Victorian Bushfire Appeal. At first
glance the cost may be somewhat high, but where else would you be able to
be able to participate in such a sumptuous dinner (prepared by three of
Melbourne's leading chefs + our own Geoffrey Tan) and have the opportunity
meet Cathy Freeman, while raising additional $$$ for the bushfire victims.
Let’s
support this Yellow Ribbon Bushfire Fundraiser Event.

Please join the Centurion Club now!
An Invitation to
be a part of the Rotary Foundation
The
Rotary Foundation is about doing good throughout the world through projects
thought up by individual Rotarians, implemented by Rotary Clubs and
Districts and supported by The Rotary Foundation to make our world a better
place
Water
and sanitation, Literacy, the furtherance of Education through scholarships
and exchanges, Maternal and child health, Disease prevention and treatment
as well as Community development are the many areas where we as Rotarians
can make a difference.
Now
you can personally make a difference too. Every Rotarian Every Year/
Centurion contributions allow you to make a difference in someone
else’s life. For just a small amount each year your contribution may just
be the final dollars needed to purchase a well, provide books to a school
or save a newborn baby
This
year for the first time, all Centurions will have the opportunity to select
the type of project where your funds will be used through the allocation of
our District Designated Funds.
Your
Centurion Renewal/ Application form has three boxes where you can just tick
one box indicating your preference for Humanitarian or Educational
programmes or you can nominate its use to be chosen by the District.
You
will find that your Centurion Renewal/ Application form has been attached
to this invitation. Print the form (one per donor) and then forward with
your minimum tax deductible $100.00 contribution to our District Centurion
coordinator, Alan Newstead, who will then forward your contribution to The
Rotary Foundation on your behalf. Alan’s postal details are located on the
bottom of the form.
I
thank you for your contribution to The Rotary Foundation through your
Centurion membership, for together we can do much
I
thank you for making a difference. Yours in Rotary, Denis Hyland
