President Greg’s
Report: The Week (Oct 29th) in Review
With
the balance of our intrepid travellers back on deck this week, along with
Kath Ronan and Robyn Stokes, with a last minute guest, Abraham Gai, the buzz was definitely back in the Club for this
week’s meeting. Keep up the invitations to new guests, as the speakers
invited over coming weeks will continue to be interesting. It’s quite
exciting to see the efforts of the last few months starting to bear fruit,
with Kath being the latest member to be nominated.
Our
guest speaker, Diane Clark mentioned the web site www.ourcommunity.com.au in the context of her talk. Diane has much
to offer in guidance to charitable clubs such as ours, and a visit to this
site will help add further depth to her useful talk. Well worth a visit. Lin deserves a pat on the back for her
organisation of such interesting, quality speakers.
To
the once a year gamblers, good luck on Tuesday.

Greg
Report from Last Week’s Meeting (Oct 29th) by Roving Reporter Ken
Clark
Guest
Speaker was Diane Clark from MacKillop Family
Services, who spoke on the topic of “Fund Raising in a not for profit
organisation”. Diane has worked in the fund raising area for a number of
organisations over the last 20 years and has been with MacKillop
Family Services for 4 years.
Diane’s
message was very relevant to Rotary as she spoke in general terms about the
principles of fund raising. Particularly in tough times, organisations should
“stick to what they know” eg. Regular giving, etc.,
rather than seek out new, high cost fund raisers.
Few
people are natural givers. People will, however, give to projects supported
by people they respect, or to projects that express their own visions. In
these situations, people will give IF THEY ARE ASKED.
A
vital aspect of fund raising is for those involved to understand that “asking is not begging”. You are not
asking for yourself. Once you accept this fact, asking becomes much easier.
It is best to ask for a specific amount, as there is no average amount that
people donate.
In
any appeal, it is vital that the leaders must give. In other words, set the
example. Face to face requests are the most successful. Diane’s experience is
that it is generally harder to get an appointment to see someone to ask for a
donation, than it is to get them to agree to donate when she gets the
appointment.
An
often neglected area for fund raising is bequests in a will. A survey showed that only 58% of people
have a will, and of these, only 7.5% have made any bequests.
A
website well worth a visit for not for profit organisations is Our Community,
which provides a wealth of information for groups on fund raising and a wide
range of other aspects. Their address is ourcommunity.com.au
In
closing, Diane highlighted the point that in tough economic times, it is
vital to remain close to existing donors, and keep working at it.

Rotary Stories from
around the Globe: (From RI Website)
Clean Water for India
The United Nations estimates 2.1 million children die
before the age of five each year due to a lack of clean water, Rotary clubs
are collaborating with the public and private sector to provide
sustainable, clean drinking water to 30,000 people in 20 villages. Rotary clubs in India and France
are together providing USD $68,000 to build four water dams in the Alwar/Sikar region, located
in the state of Rajasthan in western India. “These dams will
transform this region from a poor and famished land to green fields where
people and animals will have enough water to drink and enough food to eat,”
said Sushil Gupta, president of the board of
trustee of the Rotary India Water Conservation Trust.
As part of a grassroots effort on water management
established by Indian Rotary clubs, the RIWCT is working with local communities,
governments and the private sector to construct dams, and build reservoirs
and shafts for rainwater harvesting. Under the leadership of RIWCT,
Rotary has successfully funded five major dam projects:
In 2003, Rotary in India
adopted the Delhi Declaration, which aims to promote proper water
management throughout India
by:
- Creating public awareness of water management,
- Educating school children and stake holders at various levels on
the importance of water management,
- Disseminating knowledge about water conservation techniques
including the traditional methods,
- Encouraging community participation in integrated and sustainable
water management,
- Promoting the National Perspective Plan for interlinking of rivers
for development in water scarce areas.
The projects in India
add to the growing list of collaborative water projects between local
governments, communities and Rotary. “These partnership projects
demonstrate how government, business and the NGO community can engage to
solve global water problems in innovative ways,” said Gupta.
Rotary clubs worldwide are involved in an estimated
6,000 projects in rural areas of Africa, Latin America, and South and Southeast Asia - all aimed at addressing the lack of
access to safe water and sanitation that claims more than two million lives
each year, a majority of them children.
