President Greg’s
Report: The Week (Nov 26th) in Review
As
we head into the home straight to Christmas, please note that our last
meeting of the year will be on 17th December and we will
recommence on 13th January (Tuesday) with a combined meeting with
Doncaster Sunrise. The first meeting for the year at the Golf Club will be 21st
January.
As
mentioned recently, agreement was reached at the recent Cluster President’s meeting
to make a contribution to Eastern Emergency Relief from the proceeds of the
Farmers Market money in time for Christmas. The final sum agreed and now
committed was $10,000. This is extremely satisfying to see a joint project
able to be undertaken by our six Clubs as a result of the work and effort of
nearly every member. Plans are underway for a contribution to Eastern
Palliative Care in the near future. Well done to all.
It
was also great to have such a large turnout to our Christmas function on the
Puffing Billy. Thank you in particular to Lesley and Rob for your efforts on
this (not to mention Father Christmas).
President
Greg
Report from Last Week (Nov 26th) by Roving Reporter Alison
Gregory
It
was with interest that we heard from Lucia Strati who has been
selected as a Rotary Cultural Ambassadorial Scholar for 2008-2009.
Lucia is heading to Granada (in the south of Spain)
next year for a period of three months to undertake an intensive course in
Spanish language as part of her Rotary scholarship program.
Lucia
has recently completed her final semester towards her Graduate Diploma in
Humanities and Social Sciences in Spanish Language and Culture, and in
addition has a Bachelor of Arts degree with majors in both French Studies and
Italian Studies, (specialising in the linguistics of each of these
languages). She also holds a Cambridge University Certificate in
English Language Teaching to Adults.
Lucia
hopes to work in the future as an interpreter, on an international
level for governing bodies, non-government organizations and other
humanitarian organisations.
The
Rotary Cultural Ambassadorial Scholarship will allow Lucia to attend
intensive language training classes at Sociedad
Hispano Mundial
Language School
in Granada
and additionally immerse herself in the culture. The scholarship is
comprised of two elements, the first being academic responsibilities, and the
second as an ambassador of goodwill whilst abroad. Her ambassadorial
duties will include making presentations to both Rotary and Non Rotary
audiences and sharing her insights into Australian culture. The purpose of
Ambassadorial Scholarships is to improve international understanding and
goodwill between participating countries
We
wish Lucia well and look forward to hearing about her adventures upon
her return.

Rotary Cultural Ambassadorial Scholar Lucia Strati
impressed us with her amazing grasp of language and her vision and drive to
become a UN interpreter.

Puffing Billy
Christmas Event,
Sunday November 30th
Those
Members who attended the Puffing Billy Christmas outing on Sunday were
treated to an excellent day of fun, friendship and Rotary entertainment.
Melbourne’s Fine Sunny
Spring weather made for an excellent day’s outing in the beautiful Dandenong Ranges aboard “the Fine Old Girl in
the Hills in Puffing Billy”.
Full
marks must go to Lesley Bell and Rob Collier
who organised a first rate day on Puffing Billy.
“Santa
Ralston” provided great excitement for the youngsters and also the not so
young as the photos demonstrate.

Lesley Bell (organiser of the event)
enjoying the luxury of First Class seating.

Santa Ralston attracts a huge crowd.

One happy little girl gets a much needed
hug from Santa.

Ken Clark and Brian Martin join the boys
line hopeful of a present.

Sue
plays up to the camera while husband Brian tries to explain his missing
ticket.

Member Rob Collier still
looks the part even without his cap.

Is Santa a confused retired cricket
umpire?" Santa Ralston with Ken and Suzanne Clark’s grandson Timmy Vincent.
