President Greg’s Report:   The Week (Aug 27th) in Review

Our District Governor’s visit has come and gone and the spotlight has passed. A big thank you to Robyn Stokes for her generous assistance and time with Gaye Barnes, so that Gaye wouldn’t have to sit idly whilst we reviewed the current and future state of the Club (interesting to us but not to most partners).

Next week is our Club Assembly. This one will probably be our most important of the year, as the decisions and strategies taken by your Committee now will still have sufficient time to implement this Rotary year. Please give thought to ideas for improvement and possible activities before the meeting. It’s simply amazing how quickly the discussion time flies by when everybody needs time to contribute.

Included in this week’s quarterly District 9810 President’s Meeting were brief discussions on many topics with some of the more important ones being plans for the reinvigoration of Rotaract, details of a new Membership seminar to progress the thoughts started at the Canberra summit (19th October at Deakin Uni), a reminder on the closing time window for the 4 Way Speaking Contest and the need to return attendance returns in a timely fashion. For those interested in quality clothing, I will be distributing a fund-raising give-away on Wednesday.

Due to the need to shuffle the chair of both Fundraising (now Tony) and Membership (now Geoff), the vacancy in Membership will be filled by Paul Evans. Just as it was helpful having Alison on the Procedures Review Committee, it will be a welcome opportunity to have fresh views and ideas on membership from our newest member.

Finally, our intrepid traveller, Colin will be giving us a quick review of his latest exploits on Wednesday. This will possibly be his final address prior to his Club transfer being completed. Who do you plan to invite along next week to help fill the void?

President Greg

Report from Last week’s meeting (Aug 27th) by Roving Reporter Ken Clark:

Our Guest Speaker today was our District Governor, John Barnes, who was accompanied by his wife, Gaye. John joined the Rotary Club of Clayton in 1979, and was President in 1983/84 and again in 2002/03. He has also served on the District International and Vocational committees and been an Assistant Governor.  John opened his address by quoting from a poem penned by Edgar Guest some 50 years ago.

A better world, to make it so

Came Rotary many years ago

To serve the brotherhood of man

What is it lives through many years

And strong and youthful still appears

Deathless are these; the dreams to build

A world with peace and beauty filled

Belief in God; the Rotary plan

That seeks the brotherhood of man

The love of freedom and of truth

All these have everlasting youth

This is a better world than when

First met that group of friendly men

Though old they grew their dream appears

More glorious after many years

The Rotary spirit of today

Will still be young, let come what may

John started his address by thanking the eight members of our club who serve on District committees. He also extended thanks to Colin Macfarlane for his commitment, passion and boundless enthusiasm for the work of Operation Cleft.

He congratulated the club for its wide range of programs both locally and internationally including Mens Shed, schools ANZAC Day service, Monash Medical scholarship, Operation Cleft, and support for Interplast, Wheelchairs For Kids and Shelterbox. In addition, he thanked us for our involvement in our Cluster group.

RI President, D K Lee, has adopted as his theme for 2008-09, Make Dreams Real…. For the children of the world with special emphasis on the 26,000 children who die every day from curable diseases. We have been asked to address this issue both at home and abroad through Rotary’s main emphasis on Water, Health and Hunger, and Literacy.

This year, through the Rotary Foundation, will see a big push to match the US$100 million challenge grant from the Gates Foundation, to eradicate polio from the four remaining countries of Pakistan, Afghanistan, Nigeria and India. In 1985, over 350,000 children were infected with polio, whereas less than 2000 cases were reported in 2007. Our club goals are to raise $1,000 per annum for the next 3 years to fulfil our part of the challenge.

Through the Rotary Foundation, our District will be sending two ambassadorial scholars to Mexico and Spain for 3 months, and for the 7th year in a row, will be sending a peace scholar to Duke University in North Carolina for a two year course. We are also hosting two ambassadorial scholars from Wales and USA.

District 9810 will have a Group Study Exchange with District 4890 in Argentina in April 2009. Past President Andrew Brownlee from the Rotary Club of Ringwood has been selected as team leader.

District Conference will be held in Hobart from 26-29 March 2009.  John thanked those members who have already booked their accommodation and asked other members to give consideration to attending.

This year, District Simplified Grants have been increased to $3,000, with an emphasis on Rural Relief and Indigenous Health, both in the areas of water and literacy. Matching grants will be similar to last year with each club receiving US$800 to use on an International project with other clubs in our cluster or District.

Thirteen Youth Exchange students have arrived from overseas and a similar number will depart in coming months. The Presidential Membership conference held in Canberra in July provided a wonderful opportunity for 34 Rotarians from District 9810 to join with other Rotarians from around Australia and present their ideas on where Rotary should be heading. These ideas have been recorded and will go back to Rotary International.

District Presidents have set a goal to increase membership by 175, with our club aiming for an increase of four. The District Membership and Marketing team are available to help us in any way they can to achieve this goal.

To celebrate the 25th anniversary of Australian Rotary Health Research Fund (ARHRF), a Great Australian Bike Ride is to be held, starting in our District in March 2009, finishing in October. This will raise funds and the profile of this great Australian Rotary initiative.

Other points covered by John included the District Rural Relief committee to co-ordinate the efforts of clubs in this area, and the District Training Team under the leadership of PDG Brian Foley.

John’s wife, Gaye, spoke for a few moments on the initiative she has established to raise funds for a program called “A For A Life”. In lieu of receiving flowers at club visits, Gaye has asked that a donation be made to “A For A Life”. Funds raised are channelled through the Helen Keller International organisation that provides Vitamin A supplement to the children of Guinea. For a cost of $1 per child per year, their health can be drastically improved and many lives saved.

DG John Barnes inspires the members with his excellent address to the Club.

Gaye Barnes challenged the Club to support the “A for a Life” fund as it raises money to help reduce the dreadful loss of life amongst the children in Guinea, West Africa.

It was good to have ADG Brian Tyedin back supporting the DG and our Club.

Sergeants Session:

Recent joke – not bad!

Three pastors were having lunch in a diner. One said, "You know, since summer started I've been having trouble with bats in my loft and attic at church. I've tried everything noise, spray, cats - nothing seems to scare them away."  Another said, "Me too. I've got hundreds living in my belfry and in the attic. I've even had the place fumigated, and they won't go away:'

The third said, "I baptised all mine, and made them members of the church,  "Haven't seen one back since!"

And another from last week.

Bob, a 70-year-old, extremely wealthy widower, shows up at the Country Club with a breathtakingly beautiful and very sexy 25-year-old blonde who knocks everyone's socks off with her youthful sex appeal and charm. His buddies at the club are all aghast.

At the very first chance, they corner him and ask, "Bob, how did you get the trophy girlfriend?" Bob replies, "Girlfriend? She's my wife!" They're amazed, but continue to ask. "So,how did you persuade her to marry you?" "I lied about my age”, Bob replies. “What, did you tell her, you were only 50?" Bob smiles and says, "No, I told her I was  90:"

Skype postcard news from Ken and Libby Rice in the UK to the Ed.

While walking down the “Strand “in London Libby tripped and fell injuring her face and neck, an ambulance was quickly on the scene with Libby despatched to St Thomas hospital for care and recovery.  She is now out and up and about still feeling pretty sore and bruised, she is getting back to her more usual chirpy self, being well cared for by Ken. They pass on their greetings to the club; they will supply us with more updates shortly.
