President Greg’s
Report: The Week (May 27th) in Review
It was timely
having three guests along to the Club last meeting, given that the guest
speaker was Naanki. Whilst technically an employee of Operation Cleft, Naanki
has quickly come to be viewed as one of our own. Having now worked herself
out of her job, she has been, and is, a magnificent ambassador for this
project.
With
the proposed induction of Ross Mitchell this week, and a return visit planned
by Leigh Dixon, a large, welcoming crowd of members would be ideal. Now would
also be the ideal time to invite that friend or associate you’ve had in mind
for a while. Let them see a very positive meeting.

Report from Last Week
(May 27th) by Roving Reporter Kath Ronan
President Greg presented a cheque to NADRASCA for $7,900
dollars (proceeds from the Golf Day)
Our guest speaker Naanki Pasricha, the former Project
Manager for the Operation Cleft project presented on her personal journey in
developing the speech therapy program in Bangladesh in the 18 months she was
with the project. She spoke about the challenges and the achievements of the
project and the key people along the way that supported her in the
development of this unique project. The first speech therapy outreach
program was held in October 2008 where 17 children received therapy and 12
community health workers received training. In addition, four final speech
and language therapy students received specialist cleft speech therapy skill
training during this program. Since then, the in-country team have now
conducted a camp independently.
Naanki highlighted that we should all be very proud of
the achievements of the project and how far it has come in a relatively
short period of time. The program is moving rapidly to becoming
self-sustaining which is the ultimate goal of any development project. The
project has partnered with a local NGO, CDD and has an office and a local
project manager and speech therapy program coordinator. In addition, the
project now has a local patron, Asif Moyeen and the project is now supported
by local Corporate Donors and Rotary Clubs in Bangladesh.
Naanki has left Operation Cleft in good hands and will now
be continuing her care by taking up a position as Lecturer, Latrobe University.
President Greg and Brian Martin thanked her for the time
she had put into the project and wished her well with her future career.

Marysville Temporary
Village Paving Project
Working Bee at Marysville Temporary Village
on June 13th and or 14th, starting at 10am.
Kim Wilke is overseeing the building of
the Marysville
Temporary Village
and has asked Rotary to help. Two
weeks ago a team of Rotarians joined many other community groups to prepare
the village for its official opening.
Residents are beginning to move into the
village while tradesmen are still hard at work completing more homes each
week.
This time Kim needs our help to lay paths
to the new houses before the wet weather sets in and the ground becomes
sticky red clay mud. He has three
hundred square metres of donated pavers, so there will be about three
hundred metres of paving to lay.
Kim would like as many workers as possible – “One hundred would be nice!”
It is intended to have the foundations
for the paths prepared before Saturday, 13th, [the weekend after
the long weekend], ready for a team of Rotarians to lay the pavers.
It would be really helpful if Rotarians
can come equipped with as many of these items as possible:
Work boots, gloves, kneepads,
wheelbarrows, shovels, rubber mallets, trowels, rakes, heavy brooms – or
any other items you know would be helpful.
Rotarians, or others experienced in
laying pavers, would be invaluable to lead work teams over the weekend.
If your club would like to be part of
this project, please contact Rotary Club of Alexandra secretary Brian
Dillon, phone 03 5772 2973, and let him know which day or days you plan to
participate.
If you know of anyone who lays paving for
a living and has the expertise and time to donate, and who would be willing
to come to Marysville after the long weekend to help ensure that the
foundations are right, please let Brian know.
