This week’s meeting Wednesday 2 July
2008 http://www.rotarnet.com.au/boxhillcentral Note No Breakfast Meeting – Changeover Night 7.00pm for
7.30pm! “Make Dreams Real” Rotary Club of Box
Hill Central Changeover Night. Chairman / MC: Geoff
Limmer Desk Duties: Craig Hoath, Malcolm Chiverton, Sam Pho Roving Reporter: Don
Sweeney
“This Week Today” by President Tony: Lynne McEwen entered hospital briefly last week for a minor procedure.
She is now home and doing fine. Our best wishes are extended to Lynne and
Bruce at this time. We enjoyed another great speaker at the club meeting on Wednesday -
Roger Powell, who spoke about how to properly prepare to exit your small
business – something that will happen at some time to all those in their own
businesses, but is apparently prepared for by so few. As is our normal practice,
I presented Roger with the Operation Cleft certificate and information
package signifying the club will make a donation to OC as a thank you, and
this made a total of $675 that the club has donated to this project for our
guest speakers for the Rotary year. Also at the meeting, we farewelled Ian Milton who is leaving the club
at the end of this month. Ian and Lyn have relocated to live in As we look to Changeover next week, I would like to say THANK YOU to
all club members for your part in making this another great year for the
club. I have enjoyed the experience of being club President, and have
undoubtedly learned much personally. I believe we have achieved a lot
together through your dedication and hard work; I am reminded of this each
week when I see the long list of make-ups done by club members! I would
particularly like to congratulate Malcolm Chiverton, Brian Martin, Ken Rice
and Ralston Wood on achieving 100% attendance at club meetings this year.
Well done and thank you for your commitment. In conclusion, I extend best wishes to Greg and his team for a
successful 2008 – 2009 in which the club will continue to prosper and grow.
As he is unable to attend our club Changeover, we extend our best wishes also
to incoming District Governor, John Barnes and Gaye, for a great year as our
District leader. And to Brian Martin who is taking on the role of an
Assistant Governor on John’s team, good luck! See you all next Wednesday evening!
Dress up and come prepared for a great night. And don’t forget, no breakfast meeting next week! Yours in Rotary, TonyS
Report on Last Week’s Meeting by Roving
Reporter Ian Port:
Roger,
with 35 years experience in management organization ranks succession planning
and the process of exiting business as high priority. ‘How
do I now exit my business’ is the question so often asked. Roger
said that alike with death and taxes ‘the
owner and business will sometime have to part ways’. Less than
30% of all businesses survive 3 years or more. Every
year 7% of all businesses close their doors. 97% of
all businesses in The
average owner of a small business owner is 55 years. In the
next ten years 81% of these owners will retire with $3.6 trillion in assets
for sale. Surprisingly,
less than 25% of all owners have a retirement plan. This
includes the preparation of businesses for succession planning and business
exiting, as owners wish to maximize the value of their company. In his
‘other life’ Roger is a Board member of Box Hill Golf Club, so he was talking
to us on familiar territory.Roger’s office is in Burke Road, Camberwell
North. He can be contacted on 9809 1449. Attendance Report for Last
Week’s Meeting (25 June) by Geoff Limmer: Listed below are Apologies for and Make-ups advised at the above meeting. We especially remember
the fun, great times, and jokes that he gave to us all. It is hard to imagine
that 9 years have past so quickly.
Just a brief report on
progress in Bangladesh. Naanki and I have now met with all the
Operation Cleft partner surgeons and hospitals in Bangladesh and have
explained all the new administrative processes which have been well accepted
- we even understand them better ourselves now that we've had to explain them
so many times! We were fortunate that they travelled from
far and wide to Dhaka to see us rather than us having to travel to see
them.
Our Surgeons with
Naanki and Don Sweeney An
important objective of the trip was to brief our new administrative
partner in Bangladesh, CDD, and to ensure that they were able to meet our
stringent accounting requirements and are pleased to report that they
passed with flying colours! They will be a real asset to us - thanks to Naanki for recommending them to
us.
Our Partners in
Dhaka with Naanki Operation
Cleft will have its own office in the
CDD building once the final approvals arrive from the
government. In anticipation of that we have purchased
lever arch folders, dividers etc and spent hours labelling them and
establishing the filing system and physical environment for the office.
Jahangir, our local coordinator, has been trained by Naanki and then tested
by me to ensure that all the new procedures will be carried out
correctly... Jahangir is very enthusiastic about his new role. A nice surprise was
that through a contact of mine we were able to meet with
two Bangladeshi business men who are very keen to help us gain greater
support from Bangladeshi people, both here in Bangladesh and also
in Australia. Also, a corporate contact introduced by Naanki
has agreed to fund 100 operations per year - for a start, so there are exciting
times ahead for operation cleft.
A Street scene in
Dhaka See you soon Don
Don’s keen eye spotted
these Contractors at work and thought that they might be useful to the club
for future projects. He was most impressed with their Occupational Health and
