President Greg’s Report:

Whilst the summary of the Grand Final breakfast is detailed later in this Bulletin, I add my own appreciation to Phil Maylin for a fascinating and raw insight to the emotion that goes into the stellar event in Australia’s sporting calendar. As the tears flowed among some of our finest athletes immediately after the game, Phil’s words came to life. Commiserations to our Cats supporters. The rest of us were put out of our misery much earlier in the season. Congratulations to the Hawks. And a very big thank you to Ralston for organising such an interesting speaker for the Club.

What was really noticeable at the meeting was the buzz and energy that a breakfast for almost 40 people generates. This number for breakfast every week is well within our reach. One of the guests on the day was a prospective member from Box Hill Hospital. Kath will be back to visit us soon and Ann Buick will also be visiting us next week after her exposure to the Club as a guest speaker recently.

Baby steps are what is required to regenerate membership. Please sit down right now and consider just one guest to invite along. First target is 40 members and next we can look to 40 for breakfast. Easy really J

President Greg

Report from last week’s meeting (Sept 24th) by Roving Reporter Tony Stokes:

Grand Final Week Breakfast

38 members, partners and guests attended our annual Grand Final Week breakfast featuring Phil Maylin as guest speaker. Following some Rotary business and the presentation to the Footy Tipping winners (First Jeff Enlund, Second Tony Enlund, Third Ralston Wood - congratulations all!) our Chair for the morning, Ralston, introduced Phil.

Phil Maylin came to Melbourne in 1980 after playing with Woodville in the SA League. He played with Carlton from 1980 – 1984 inclusive, playing 81 matches and in three Grand Finals (1980, 81, 82) with the Blues, before transferring to Footscray in 1985/86, and playing in their finals side in 1985. Altogether 4 finals in 122 matches – not bad!

Phil began by describing the tremendous physical and emotional toll on players of the modern game, especially of the finals, but also of how playing in a Grand Final is the ultimate fulfilment of every footballer’s aspirations. He followed this with an amusing description of his transfer to Carlton in 1980, and of literally getting off the plane, being driven at high speed to Victoria Park (Collingwood home ground) by Percy Jones and running straight onto the ground with a team of players he had never met before! How times have changed! 1981 saw the arrival at Carlton of David Parkin and a much more disciplined and professional approach to training and administration. But there still existed a culture of hard drinking and partying as well as hard training which was expected of all players.

With the help of Ian Collins, Phil re-negotiated his contract with Carlton for 1983/84, but was not renewed in 1985, so he transferred to Footscray and played two years/33 games with the ‘Dogs. After his AFL career, Phil coached Springvale to a Premiership in the VFA (now VFL) before coaching a local club and is currently an assistant coach with the Bulldogs.

Other facts about Phil – he polled a total of 13 Brownlow votes in his career, and was reported twice, but was found not guilty on both occasions. He named Bruce Doull as one of the best he played with, while most outstanding opponents he rated as Ricky Barham (speed), Robert Flower (talented) and Leigh Matthews (toughest).

Altogether a most entertaining and insightful presentation, enjoyed by all.

Footnote: Craig and Penny then conducted an “unconventional” raffle draw (“how about picking an orange ticket!”) which saw many present take away a prize. Thank you to all who donated prize items. The raffle generated $257 and the proceeds for the morning totaled $340 towards the club’s fundraising for 2008/09.

GO CATS  for Saturday!!

Ralston Wood (Excuse the colours!) receives 3rd Prize from the Club’s 08 Tipping Comp – the 1st and 2nd prizes go to Club member Peter Enlund’s brothers, Jeff (1st) and Tony (2nd).

Phil Maylin describes the physical and emotional pressures involved with playing Grand final football.

Tony Stokes left and Malcolm Chiverton proudly wearing the only colors that counted on the day.

Louise Multicultural Centre wins Whitehorse Business Award

From: Stuart Williams,  Thursday 25 Sept 2008

Last night was the Leader Newspapers Business Achiever Awards, Louise Multicultural Centre won the category  Community Services, not for profit and the:

BUSINESS ACHIEVER OF THE YEAR in the City of Whitehorse

We were up against more than 150 businesses - from Safeway to the local fruit shop, unbelievable

Judging involved VECCI , State govt and Leader newspapers.

It is great credit to my tutors and organisational volunteers and staff who have made Louise MCC the great place it is.  They work so hard with so little to create something quite exceptional.

Now even outsiders are going to know that.

I have had a press interview already as well as a radio one.

Congratulations and well done to Louise MCC on this great achievement, the Club have continued to be supporters of Louise MCC for some years now.  Ed
