Prior to 1997 Springwood Rotary Club managed to provide sausage sizzles and the like with BBQ’s brought from home and working from the back of trailers and utilities. For instance the first Foundation day we had a Gazebo that we put together like a jig saw puzzle from a series of numbered pipes (it took forever to erect) and at least two small BBQ’S, in what is now known as the Town Square
It was in my year as President 97/98 that we decided to build a BBQ trailer as part of a plan to be more involved in community projects and be more visible to the community. Springwoods Rotary’s first BBQ trailer was completed late in 1997 and was fully operational in 1998 being used at the Australia day ceremony in January of that year
Ross Ingram and I had decided to check out numerous food trailers from other clubs and commercial users to either buy or copy a trailer suitable for us. We decided to build our own trailer and Ross designed and arranged for the trailer to be built. The trailer cost approximately $1,500 to build and Ross managed to get a donation of $1,500 over 3 years from Springwood Nissan to pay for the trailer. Springwood Nissan as a sponsor had their name written on our first trailer
Ross then managed the trailer until 2002. The previous year as Community Service Director I proposed to the club that we offer to manage the existing Blue Gum Market at Springwood Public School and after several attempts we were accepted by the school. Ross then managed the Blue Gum Rotary Market and the trailer for a while before he handed over the management of the trailer to me in 2002
In 2004 I made a successful application on behalf of the club to the Australian Government for a grant under the “Volunteer Small Equipment Grants 2004”. The grant was for $4,454.55 and we arranged for Blue Mountains Welding and Maintenance to build us our current trailer for that amount. The trailer is galvanised with stainless steel cupboards and shelving fitted with a large hot plate at the rear of the trailer. The final cost of trailer was $5,000 fully fitted out; however we were able to sell our old trailer for $1,500 to another Rotary club in the Liverpool area
The trailer has been a huge success with reference to its original purpose of making us more visible in our community and providing a valuable community service. In addition it is estimated to have added approximately $60-70,000 to our Rotary programmes over the 13 years it has operated
The Springwood Rotary Club members through the BBQ have serviced our Blue Gum Markets for the past 13 years, The Glenbrook Australia Day Ceremony for 13 years, Springwood Foundation day for 13 years, Vietnam Veterans annual ceremony for 8 years, the Variety Club Golf Day for 8 years, and a number of other special days such as, Carols by Candle Light, Golf Days, Olympic Torch Relay, Girl Guides, Care Flight, Youth days and many others
The Members of the Rotary Club of Springwood should be proud of the community service provided by the BBQ trailer and in particular the stalwarts that have regularly manned the trailer
