High School The Duke of Edinburgh Awards commenced in
Australia in 1962 and in this State are currently delivered in partnership
with the NSW Dept of Sport & Recreation. The Award is a program of cultural,
practical and adventurous activities.
It is all about challenge which encourages participants to set
personal goals and achieve them. The Awards are intended to be used for the
development of young people ranging in age from 14 years to 25 years. Richmond High School has approximately 16
students at present participating in the program. Rotary’s donation will be used to purchase
materials for the High School’s Club such as packs and tents for outdoor
activities involving expeditions and physical recreation. Richmond Olympian - Joel Brunker Joel Brunker who trains at the Richmond
Amateur Boxing Club has been selected to represent Australia in the 54kg
division (Bantamweight) in Boxing in Athens. He is only 18 years of age and is the youngest Australian
boxer to have participated at an Olympic Games. As Joel had to quit his job to concentrate
on the Olympics, the Board decided to provide a donation of $500 as a form of
financial assistance towards the costs of his three-month training schedule. Financial support for the young “home-grown”
Olympian has also been raised through “fund raisers” organised by other local
community groups. The Boards decision to allocate in total
the sum of $7,000 simply reflects the view of Club Members that youth within
the local community should be encouraged to promote and to further develop
skills in their particular fields of endeavour Financial Grants for |
