The Community Chest

The $2 raffle ticket that is a hassle free way to raise quick funds for any organisation - BIG or small.
Burwood Rotary provides any community group willing to raise funds for themselves with free raffle tickets. The tickets are not only free, they are available now and all year round.
All the organizing, like purchase of prizes, printing of tickets, drawing etc is done by Burwood Rotary. Tickets are then distributed to other Rotary clubs and from there to community groups.
The selling of the tickets is up to the individual community group and an unprecedented 75%, that is $15.00 out of $20 for a book of tickets sold, is your organization's money!
The voluntary work and the net-working of Rotary keeps the yearly expenses to just below $80,000. From there it is a simple mathematical equation to see that it needs big sales to break even on 75% - an amount difficult to achieve for most organizations.
Tickets can be ordered at any time of the year. The return date is indicated on the invoice. Returns naturally need to be in on time for the draw which is twice a year in full accordance with the Lotteries Act. The Community Chest is run by a registered trust and there are no tax implications.
The draw details are published in the SMH the Friday after the draw and the winners will be notified for the collection of prizes to be arranged.

A Brief History of the Community Chest:
In 1992 The Rotary Club of Burwood launched the Community Chest raising $25,000.
Because of the high payout we lost money for the first four years.
But because of the high payout it became popular and funds raised by community organisations rose to over $1 Million yearly by 1999.
It is estimated that two thirds of the money would not be raised - but for the Community Chest.
Therefore it is clear that the Community Chest has been a huge benefit to many groups and organisations that would otherwise not have been able to raise these funds.
By July 2009 it has raised $12,512,000.
Who are the organizations that benefit?
Rotary itself, a community service organization, does not profit. We raise funds and donate them to worthy causes. The participating organizations selling the tickets, that they received free, are the main beneficiaries.
They include:

- High Schools and Play Schools
- St. John of God Hospital
- War Memorial Hospitals & Country Hospitals
