Held on the 2nd Saturday in December, this luncheon for the old folk of the area is a great Christmas event.
Everyone in the Lower Blue Mountains Rotary Club who is available, enjoys helping the (approximately) 140 elderly people (4 guests were 96 years of age last year) who enjoy the Christmas luncheon and entertainment.
Santa comes along and individually made Christmas cards, which have been made year after year by the 8 & 9 year olds from Lapstone Public School are given to our guests, along with a small gift.
Emu Plains Sporting Club also helps by providing an excellent 3 course luncheon.
To be successful, this event requires as many club members as possible to participate, transporting the old folk in their cars where required, ensuring they can easily manage the way into the room and helping them settle in their seats with something to drink. We 'wait on table', serving the meals, removing the dirty plates, ensuring our guests can manage the meal, and doing everything we can to make the luncheon is a Christmas highlight for these senior citizens.
A local band, the 30 member Blue Mountains Concert Band donates its time to provide Christmas entertainment. Traditional carols are sung, and those of our guests who are willing and able, stand up with the band and sing while everyone else sings along from their seats.
It would be hard to say who enjoys it the most - our guests or our members!
This year will be the 19th Young at Heart organised by John Keogh, recently with the help of Jan Clark.
Funds are raised by the Rotary Club of Lower Blue Mountains through their normal fund raising activities, which enables the club to hold this and other community events. The Club has expended more than $60,000 on this senior citizen project to date.
The Rotary Club of Lower Blue Mountains has been presented with an Award for our “outstanding contribution to the Blue Mountains community” by Blue Mountains City Council .
