Rotary Club of Wahroonga

  Club History

 

 

The presentation of the Club’s charter was made on the 25th November 1975- District 268. The Club was one of the few Clubs in Australia to be chartered with a boundary coinciding with that of our mother Club Turramurra. The first Club President was Dr John Doherty. Two years later the Club became a member of the newly formed District 9680.

The years 1977 to 1984 saw the following members lead the Club - Messrs Habel, Liney, Ferguson, Danvers, England, Hoy and Leventhal.

A variety of projects were undertaken including;

  • A public Speaking Competition for local schools
  • Sponsored the first Youth Exchange student to Denmark and Germany
  • Formed the first Probus Club in our area
  • Installed a stair elevator at the Prouille School
  • Hosted the first Exchange student from Japan
  • Proposed a project for District conference-- hydraulic rescue equipment for fire trucks

Other highlights included;

  • Gordon Baker was awarded an Order of Australia
  • Jack Rashleigh received a Paul Harris Fellow award
  • In 1984 a change of format for the Club was initiated-- that of a Breakfast Club
  • This was to be the first in the South Pacific region, and 23 members moved their venue to the Warrawee Bowling Club (present meeting place)

The new Club format was to see another change in 1989, but in the interim was served by the following Club Presidents - Messrs Fuller, Krone, Love and Gardiner.

A variety of projects were undertaken including

  • Construction of a traffic island at the Wahroonga Village centre, in conjunction with Ku-ring-gai Municipal Council
  • Provided design support for Camp Breakaway

    Provided sandals for leprosy victims.

    Constructed a summer house at United Protestant Association.

    Provided support for Dr Ted Freeman's Coma Arousal unit.

    Proposed the Tongan Heart Appeal at a District level which was accepted.

    Hosted three scouts and their Scout Leader for the Sydney World Jamboree.

    Other highlights included-

    The Club won the District Bulletin award

    The Club won the District Barber Shop Quartet Competition

    In 1989 the Club was incorporated under the Companies Act and became a Limited Company.

    In that year David Cooper was President, and was followed by Messrs-Rob Giacometti, Martin Forrow, Lionel Lever, Jim Mein, George Richards, Bob Quodling, Ian Davidson, Phil Dean, John Baikie, John Cameron, Ian Cameron, Dick Webb, John Welch, David Maclean, Ken Broadhead, Vic Deeble, Gary Webb, Peter Smith, Bob Howe and Margaret Sachs.  

     A variety of projects were undertaken including-

    The "Bill Leventhal Memorial was unveiled at the Sydney Adventist Hospital

    Support for the Lifeline Book Fair

    $5000 was raised for the Nyngen Flood relief programme

    Supplied clean up resources for the North Shore cyclone havoc.

    Supplied a missing persons tracking device to the Hornsby Police.

    The East Wahroonga Probus Club was formed

    Hosted RYLA for the the District ( 25th Anniversary-1993)

    Sporting Dinner hosted at RNSH—150 attended.

    Assisted stranded families resulting from the bush fires north of Sydney.

    Sponsored a young Mongolian girl for heart surgery in Sydney, this project led to several years of initiatives to support our sister Club formed in Ulaanbataar (capital of Mongolia) to contribute to the medical efforts in that city.

    Medical team visits were made in conjunction with the SAN, to Mongolia and included members of the Club, Messrs Quodling, Freeman and Giacommetti.

    Raised $11,000 for the Westmead Children's Hospital

    Arranged a Carl .P. Miler grant for initiatives in Mongolia

    Set up a Sister Club relationship with Gerrards Cross Club in the UK

    Cleaned graffiti from walls in Wahroonga Village centre

    Raised $10,000 for a Mongolian Doctors training visit to Sydney

    Other highlights included-

    Membership grew from 35 to 60

    First lady members inducted in 1996

    The inaugural presentation of the Martin Forrow Award

    Developed an increased focus on fellowship activities

    Arranged a bus trip to Melbourne for several club members to attend the World RI Conference

    An International President citation Award was received in 1993

    Organised the District assembly in Bathurst.

    Dr Charles Sharp first non Rotarian was awarded a Paul Harris Fellow, by the Club, for his work in Nepal. He was followed by Joan Giacometti and Paul Cave.
