The Rotary Club of Toukley
Toukley
Toukley is situated on the northern part of the Central Coast of New South Wales Australia between
Sydney and Newcastle. The Rotary Club of Toukley is the most northern club of Rotary District 9680.
Toukley is an expanding residential area and popular holiday destination which is almost surrounded
by water fronting Tuggerah and Budgewoi Lakes and backing on to the ocean. It is also one of the most developed commercial districts on this stretch of the coast.
Edward Hargraves, who played a large part in the first commercial gold find in Australia built
Noraville on the cliffs, one of the first homes on the lakes, in the early 1860's.
The Norah Head Lighthouse, which is one of the districts most prominent landmarks, celebrates its
100th anniversary this year, 2003.
What is Rotary?
Rotary is a world-wide body of clubs, which meet in over 189 countries with over 1.2 million
members. Each club is autonomous, but subscribes to a set of common objectives developed since its inception in Chicago, Illinois in 1905.
Rotary International is the association of Rotary Clubs around the world. Each club selects its own
service projects based on local needs and requirements. It is through these projects that money is raised and dispersed. All money raised by Rotary goes to nominated charities and community projects.
Club work on projects related to health, hunger, environmental concerns, literacy and vocational
assistance, drug abuse and assisting senior citizens and youth.
Club members support projects internationally through contact with Rotarians in other countries and
by participation in programs of the Rotary International Foundation.
Membership in a Rotary Club is based on current and retired representatives of businesses and
professions. This ensures a wide cross section of community representation.
What do we get out of Rotary?
Our Club has meetings on Thursday nights at which we hear invited guests on a variety of subjects of
interest to the Club member. It is also an opportunity to discuss business and local matters with other members. As well as participating in general fellowship.
During the year there are numerous occasions when partners are invited, but they are always welcome
at our weekly meetings. At times, in order to raise funds or perform a community service, we roll up our sleeves and give what time we can spare. We try to make these as social as possible.
As Rotary is an international organisation we often have overseas visitors at our club. Additionally, if
we are travelling interstate or overseas we are welcome to visit any of the thousands of Rotary Clubs. This is a font of information and an opportunity to meet new friends and make business contacts. But most importantly, Rotary gives us the opportunity to put something back into our community.
Throughout our lives we, in some way or other, take something from the government, the community
and from each other. Rotary allows us the opportunity to put that something back.
We hold many social functions and enjoy great fun and fellowship at all our meetings.
The Rotary Club of Toukley Inc. meets every Thursday 6:30pm for 7:00pm at Toukley R.S.L. Club, except on public
holidays.
If Rotary interests you why not contact us and be invited as our guest.
