YOUTH ENCOURAGEMENT AWARDS 1999

As part of the program to recognise Youth Month in September the Rotary Club of Parkwood
presented three young people with Youth Encouragement Awards.  The Awards were presented
by Michelle Rowsell, Youth Service Director.

Each young person had been nominated by their school or workplace for being an outstanding
member.

EMMA WOODS, a Year 7 student at Trinity Lutheran Primary School, Ashmore received an
Award for her contribution to school life, especially in the area of Music and Sport and for high
achievement in academic and creative areas as well as relating well to her peers and teachers.

JOELLE WILLIAMS, a Year 12 student at St. Hilda's College, Southport received her Award
for high levels of academic achievement in all her subjects, especially Japanese language. Joelle
represented the State as a finalist in the Japanese Speaking Competition. She also excels in
personal and social interactions at the school.

NEIL HINDE is a recent graduate of Mirikai Drug and Alcohol Rehabilitation program. Neil
has overcome heroin and amphetamine addiction to become not only a valued member of
society but is now working at Mirikai as a volunteer while studying Counselling at Bond
University.  This young man is a credit to the Recovery program.

Many relatives, teachers and friends came to the dinner meeting to see these young people
receive their plaques and were justifiably proud. A pleasant evening and rewarding experience
for all in attendance.
