Parkwood student, Adam Zaniewski, is off to the end of the world later this
month........and he couldn't be happier.
Adam, 17, who has just graduated from Arundel's AB Paterson College with
a coveted OP1, is going to live for a year in the southern most part of
Argentina as a Rotary exchange student.
(extract from article in Gold Coast Sun on 19 January, 2000)

                  (Please click photo to enlarge)

The newspaper article continued as follows:
His exciting trip is being sponsored by the Parkwood Rotary Club, and he will be hosted by families
from the Rotary Club of Rio Gallegos, a city of around 65,000 located close to the Straits of
Magellan.
At over 50 degrees south of the equator, it is one of the most southerly Rotary Clubs in the world.
"The region promotes itself as a tourist attraction that is at 'the end of the world'," said Adam who will
have to cope with temperatures as low as minus 15 degrees during his stay there.
Adam, who will be an ambassador for 'my country, my State and my City' embodies Australian
multiculturalism.
His mother is Japanese and his father of mixed Polish and Irish stock.
Adam, the eldest of three children, lived the first 10 years of his life in Japan before coming to
Australia.
He has travelled widely with his family and was attracted to apply for a Rotary exchange after
seeing a poster at school.
"I liked the idea of becoming totally immersed in a different culture for an extended period," said
Adam who expects to study medicine at University on his return.
"I don't see myself in general practice but rather in the research area of virology or neuroscience or
perhaps surgery," said Adam.
"My long term dream is to work for NASA as an astronaut or astrophysicist."
Adam will undergo the final year of High School again during his year in Argentina.
As he has four years of Spanish studies under his belt he doesn't expect too many language or
communication problems.
"I don't think it will be a case of going  over the same ground because I'll be undertaking all my
studies in the Spanish language including Spanish literature," he said.
Adam said while he would miss his family and friends, the year in Argentina would give him the time
to think about his future directions. And to learn the Tango.
"I've already spoken to some of my Argentinian classmates via the Internet and they have promised
to teach me to Tango," he said.
Public speaking will also be on the agenda, and no doubt something Adam, an accomplished
and award-winning speaker, will relish.

Extract from Club Bulletin of 11 January, 2000 (Acting Editor PDG Ken Smith):
Adam Zaniewski addressed the meeting with a preview of the programme he has prepared for his Rotary Club
in Argentina. Adam leaves on Monday for a year’s stay, during which time he will represent Rotary and Australia.
Adam is a fine representative. During his address he demonstrated an acute understanding, not only of his
responsibility, but of his knowledge of Australian history, geography, wildlife, culture and language. All this from
a young man who first came to our country some 8 years ago.
It was pleasing to see the number of Adam’s peers who came to bid him farewell. They were Nerine Cummins, Ingrid Neilsen, Belinda Sizmur and Tristan Voysey.
Adam’s parents Vincent and Chisato also joined us for the evening.
Adam is scheduled to leave the Ansett Domestic Terminal in Brisbane at 5.20am  on Monday, 17th January, 2000

sent here. However, if it is an e-mail addressed to a group, please continue
