First Message from Bridget in France - 28 January:

Hey Parkwood Rotary,

Sorry for the late correspondence, I have been very busy since I arrived. I am living in Fougeres, and it's awesome. I could not have asked for a better host family, they are exactly like my own, right down to the dorky family calendars ;-) They have been more than welcoming, and are very understanding in regards the language barrier. They are talking to me in English for the moment, whilst slowly integrating French. It is very challenging, but I am pleased to say I seem to be picking it up faster than anticipated! I started school on Monday afternoon, and am really enjoying it. I am in the same class as one of my host sisters, Charlotte, and have become friends with her and my other host sister, Amelie's, friends. They are all very funny people, and great fun to be around. I also seem to be getting a lot of friend requests on Facebook from random French people at my school which is pretty cool. The lifestyle here is very relaxed. Most afternoons after school we go to the "Paris Cafe" for a coffee or to friends houses, and the weekends are spent seeing friends, studying, and hitting the local pub or a party or two. This weekend we are going to the beach which should be exciting, and then to a party on Saturday evening. It is very cold here, it varies between - 3 to 6 degrees (if we're lucky), so that has definitely been quite a shock for me!! It is expected to snow again within the next couple of weeks! I have met two other exchange students living in my town so far; Ariel, a girl from Taiwan who attends my school and is also friends with my host sisters, and Kary, a girl from Mexico who attends the public school down the road. I went to my first Rotary meeting on Tuesday evening. I couldn't understand much of what they were saying, but they were very hospitable nonetheless :-) Homesickness has not been to bad so far, although on Australia Day I did get a little bit down. I think my host family must have realised, because when I came home from school yesterday evening, they had organized "Australian" cheerios with little Australian flags in them, and Champagne to celebrate! There's so much more to tell, but I don't have enough time ha ha. Thank you so much for providing me with this experience, I will try to keep you all updated regularly :-)
