1. PLAN IT YOUTH
PROGRAM:
The mentoring program is being conducted by SCISCO (South Coast
Industry Schools Coordinating Organisation) through their Plan it Youth
Program. The co-ordinator is none other than Past President
David's
daughter, Belinda Rolle.
The mentor program involves a training course which commenced
31 July 2002 and will go for approximately 10 weeks. The program
takes up
two hours on Wednesday afternoon at the offices of Group Training at
Nerang.
The course is free. Approximately 26 people are participating
The program is a trial program aimed at training mentors to assist Grade
10
High School Students who are considering leaving school and not
continuing
on to Grade 12. The reason for the program is that statistics have
shown
that students who leave in Grade 10 as opposed to those who continue to
Grade 12 are twice as likely to be unemployed at the age of 20.
Once the initial training course has been completed a trial program will
be
conducted at Merrimac High School over the last term of the year.
This will
involve a couple of hours once a week for the length of the term (about
10
weeks). The trial program will then be evaluated, to see whether
it will be
continued and hopefully expanded to other high schools.

2. CAREER INFORMATION:
The second project I am involving myself in is to give career
information to Grade 7 students. As you are aware this is the year
before
children go to high school and I am told that schools are more than
happy to
receive career information for the benefit of their students. It
lets the
students know what career opportunities exist.
What I intend doing is to offer my services initially (and anybody else
who
wishes to give their time) to the primary schools within our area.
As I
understand it this will be Guardian Angels, Musgrave, Arundel, Labrador
and
AB Patterson. I am not aware of any other schools within our Rotary
area.
I have done this type of thing before at my children's school. It
took less
than an hour. I gave a short talk (approximately 15 minutes) on
the
Australian and Queensland Legal Systems and then answered the children's
questions for about 30 minutes.
I have asked for volunteers from members of the Club prepared to give
an hour of their time to attend at a primary school to give the students
some
vocational information on their particular profession, trade or calling.
It can
be a bit daunting for those without any public speaking experience given
that you are faced by 80 to 100 school children who all want to ask you
questions. However my experience is that it is very rewarding both for
the
students and the person who is giving the information. Please contact me
as
soon as possible if you can assist with this program.
3. CPR
TRAINING:
This excellent program initiated by Doug Thomas, Vocational Service
Director
last year will be continued in 2002/3. I am grateful for the ready
co-operation
of Doug to assist with the organisation of further training that will
utilise the
three manikins donated last year. The following link gives further
details of
this program:

4. VOCATIONAL VISITS:
As the opportunity occurs arrangements will be made for vocational
visits to
various industrial and commercial establishments on the Gold
Coast. These
visits will be held in conjunction with normal club meetings.
5. MEMBERS' JOB TALKS:
These talks always create much interest and enable us to better know
our
fellow members. Also in this way we are recognising the worthiness of
all
useful occupations. 6.
MEMBERS' WEBSITES:
The websites of members have been linked to the Vocational Service
page of our website as a means of Rotarians increasing their
knowledge and understanding of the vocations of fellow members.
