Vocational Service Update

March 2009

Welcome to the March edition of the Vocational Service Update, designed to keep you informed about the latest developments with vocational service worldwide and provide useful information and resources to enhance your Rotary club and district vocational service projects.  Comments and suggestions for future issues are welcome at vocationalservice@rotary.org.
Share your vocational service project on YouTube

When Rotarian Jeffrey Ott wanted to share his club's mushroom festival with a wider audience, the professional photographer teamed up with another club member to compose a slideshow and upload it to YouTube, complete with original music.

"It provides a quick and easy format for clubs without requiring a lot of expertise or equipment," says Ott, a member of the Rotary Club of Hawks Prairie-Lacey, Washington, USA, of the video-sharing site. "We are trying to use it more. People tend to go to YouTube first."

Video is an indispensable tool as Rotary seeks to increase membership among younger generations. Fortunately, it has never been easier to add to your club's Web site.

Rotary International launched its own YouTube channel a year ago with two goals in mind: offering Rotary-related video to viewers who may not be familiar with the organization, and providing free content to Rotary club webmasters.

District makes vocational service a priority

August Hioco, governor of District 5230 (California, USA), has made the Avenue of Vocational Service the cornerstone of his year in office, and he encourages all clubs to give Rotarians the opportunity to network and do business with one another. As the global economic crisis deepens, Hioco believes there is no better time for clubs to rediscover this avenue. He has collaborated with Past District Governor Mary Margaret Fleming on Back to the Basics: Rotary 1905, a tool kit that explores vocational service. Download a PDF version from the District 5230 Web site.

Develop leadership skills in your club

Use Leadership Development: Your Guide to Starting a Program (250) to groom future club officers and help them advance professionally. The handbook offers guidelines for creating a leadership development program at the club level, covering topics such as communication skills, goal setting and accountability, leadership styles, ethics, and mentoring. Consider creating a program as part of a vocational service project, and open it to the community as a way to attract future club members. Though the program is optional, the benefits to your club are indispensable.

International e-mail delivery
Server restrictions, Internet service providers with limited resources, strict national spam laws, overactive security filters, and other issues affect e-mail delivery internationally. When sponsoring or participating in international service projects, consider setting up a free e-mail account from a global company such as Google, Hotmail, or Yahoo to help ensure successful delivery.
Does your Rotary club have a successful vocational service project to share? Do you have any comments or suggestions for future editions of the Vocational Service Update? Send them to vocationalservice@rotary.org.
