PRESENTATION OF

PRIDE OF WORKMANSHIP AWARD TO SHIRLEY DALY

30 JANUARY 2007

Comments by Sue Burgess, Director of Nursing, Southport Surfers Paradise Blue Nursing Centre, Labrador:

I would like to thank you for considering an award for Shirley Daly who is a Registered Nurse working for Blue Care at the Southport Surfers Paradise Blue Nursing Centre.

Prior to her employment here Shirley worked for St Vincent De Paul Nursing Service, or OzCare as it is now called. She was a stomal therapist and also did additional training to be a palliative care nurse. At 60 years of age she was required to retire and due to all her exceptional expertise she was eagerly employed by Blue Care to continue to work in the community as a registered nurse.

During this time she also served on committees to improved education to all levels of staff in the area of palliative care and grief recovery. She was also involved in a support group for all professionals and volunteers working in the area of grief and loss.

Shirley now works one day a week as the coordinator of the Grief Recovery Program for Blue Care. This is a free program for the community to assist those people struggling with the effects of bereavement through the death of a family member or loved one.

In her spare time Shirley has for many years visited the lonely and isolated members of the Catholic Church and taken them Holy Communion on a weekly basis. This is a wonderful service as these people are unable to go to church.

Shirley also volunteers her time to assist with any functions Blue Care puts on for clients. She is truly a dedicated and committed person who volunteers on a continuing basis.

The presentation of the Award was made by Cr Rob Molhoek, an honorary member of the Club, in the
presence of District Governor Douglas Geekie and his wife, Suzanne, and Mark Kent, President of the
Parkwood Rotary Club and his wife, Jan, and members and guests of the Club. The function took place
at the Blue Nursing Centre, Labrador and was attended by Sue Burgess, Director of Nursing; and other
staff members, including
Helen Gullison, Nurse Manager. Helen recently completed her year in the Queensland Cancer Fund’s Nurse of the Year Campaign where she raised over $30 000.00 and provided education for the wider community on prevention and early detection as well as the services provided for patients.
