Jasmine's address to the Parkwood Rotary Club on 13 March 2007:

Hey everyone, I’m Jasmine Mikschi and I attend Yr 10 at Trinity Lutheran College. I’d like to start by thanking you for the opportunity to attend the RYPEN Leadership Camp in April. I believe this camp will be of great benefit to me. Actually, one of my goals is to be part of the leadership team at my school in Yr 12, 2009.

I am currently participating for the Bronze Duke of Edinburgh. This is an international young people’s award and is all about individual challenges. I am required to complete three sections of the award : skill, sport and service. For two of these categories I have to complete 3 months, and the other category I am required to complete 6 months.

For my skill I am learning German. Each week I record my one hour German class at school. My goal is to be fluent, or somewhat close, over the next three years.

As part of my sport category, I take part in a personal fitness cycle class at the gym each week. I have been doing this for two months and I can already see my fitness has improved.

For my service component I have chosen a 6 month commitment. Last year I helped out with Rotary to serve breakfast to the kids at Musgrave School each week. This year I am helping out every Thursday afternoon for two hours at the Southport Baptist Church. There I help run the Kids Club and thoroughly enjoy working and getting to know the kids each week.

On top of this I am required to attend two Duke of Edinburgh camps. I attend my first camp this weekend (17/18 March), at Mebbin near Murwillumbah. We are hiking approximately 15km over the two days, with all our gear on our backs including tents and food.

I also hold a part time job at Slender Image Body toning Spa at Crestwood Plaza. There I work an average of 10 hours a week. I have been working with customers in the service and health industry.

With all my current activities I believe the RYPEN Camp will be beneficial and another milestone in discovering my true self and the path I need to take to be the person I want to be.

Thank you Rotary Club of Parkwood, no dream can be fulfilled without an opportunity to make it happen. Thank you greatly for this wonderful opportunity.

The District 9640 RYPEN program will be held at Camp Bornhoffen from 20th to 22nd April 2007
