RFFA Joins “The Partnership for an HIV-Free
Generation” in Kenya.
The US State Department
chose Rotarians for Fighting AIDS to become an
implementation partner for its newest youth
prevention of AIDS project. This project, led by
the Office of the Global AIDS Coordinator, has
been launched at the pilot site in Nairobi,
Kenya. While it remains in the developmental
planning stage, the project envisions
ground-breaking approaches to HIV prevention
targeting youth. Funded by The President’s
Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief, the HIV-Free
Generation in Kenya project embraces partners
from the world’s business community, blending
their talent, innovative products and services
with those offered by international
non-governmental organizations currently working
at the community level in Kenya. The ambitious
concept is to develop the pilot program in
Nairobi to reduce new HIV infections by 50% in
five years. With a successful pilot established,
the program will be expanded throughout Kenya
and eventually to all of Sub- Saharan Africa.
As
an “Implementation Partner”, Rotarians, through
RFFA, will initially conduct a Medical Mission
beginning in September, 2008.
Teams of physicians, dentists, optometrists, and nursing professionals, accompanied by Rotarian volunteers from round the world in partnership with Kenyan Rotary Clubs, will work for 10 days with youth living in three slum areas of Nairobi to deliver basic medical care and health screenings.
