Godfrey will commence
studies at the University of Queensland in February 2005 In response to an
invitation to visit the Parkwood Website Godfrey has written as follows: "Am so delighted to hear
from you and above all, to get the information about
Parkwood Rotary Club.
l have been a Rotaractor since 1997;where l have served
various communities under different avenues of service. During the
Rotary year 2000/2001,
l served as a Club President in "CREATING AWARENESS AND TAKING
ACTION."
Right now, I am working as Trainer volunteer with a non governmental
organisation in the field of Conflict Management and Peace Building. The
organisation is currently implementing a Peace Education Programme in North
Eastern region of Uganda (Karamoja), bordering Kenya in the East and Sudan
in the North.
It targets a pastoral
community (KARAMOJONG) that has been engaged in
inter-ethnic armed cattle rustling for over two decades and whose pastoral
life has caused violent conflict between them and the neighbouring
predominantly sedentary and agricultural population.
The situation is further reinforced by the proliferation of small arms in
this region whose borders are so porous to allow gun trafficking from the
unstable neighbouring southern Sudan, Somalia , the Great Lakes and Horn of
Africa.
This kind of work has provided me with a humbling experience; particularly
because of the profound challenges ranging from high illiteracy rates (88%);
very conservative traditional and cultural practices and beliefs; poor
infrastructure, harsh environmental conditions, susceptibility to attacks
from both within and across the borders etc.
Please do keep me informed with any Rotary information in Queensland and
any other general information as you may wish. Am looking forward to hearing
from you always. Send my regards to the President and the Club membership at
large. God bless you as we CELEBRATE ROTARY."
