Rotarian Action Group for Polio Survivors and Associates

The Rotarian Action Group for Polio Survivors and Associates brings together Rotarians who share a common interest in supporting polio survivors and the PolioPlus program. The group initiates projects to provide care for polio survivors and educate the public on Rotary's polio eradication efforts, and it collaborates with individuals, organizations, and institutions working to assist survivors.

Most recently, the group has undertaken projects to provide corrective surgeries and rehabilitation to 200 polio afflicted children in India. In Nigeria, it has supplied uniforms to soccer teams made up of polio survivors and provided over 1,000 survivors with bicycle wheelchairs. The group is also working to collect the personal stories of individuals and communities affected by polio.

The Rotary Foundation Future Vision pilot

Get the latest on the Future Vision Plan by signing up for the Future Vision Pilot News, a monthly e-newsletter that will connect you to new online Future Vision resources and information. The pilot will last three years, and 100 districts have been selected to participate. Pilot and nonpilot districts may continue to work together throughout the Future Vision pilot. For new projects during 2010-13, pilot districts must use district grants to partner with nonpilot districts. Read more.

WCS projects in the Dominican Republic

Rotary clubs in District 5110 (parts of California and Oregon, USA) have worked together with the Rotary Club of Salcedo, the host club in District 4060, Dominican Republic, on four World Community Service (WCS) projects over the past three years. The projects have included equipping elementary and high school computer classrooms, a physiotherapy center, and three community libraries. The close relationship began when Josefina Ureņa, a member of a Group Study Exchange team hosted by District 5110, joined the Rotary Club of Salcedo. Josefina is the current president of the club, which had not participated in WCS in its first 50 years, and has now hosted 15 projects. Norm Malmberg, District 5110 WCS Executive Committee member and Rotary Volunteers chair, has said "the bond and working relationship that we have formed with the Club Rotario Salcedo is inseparable." He and Drake Travis, a fellow member of the Rotary Club of Scott Valley (Ft. Jones), California, the international sponsor club, are traveling to Salcedo this month to help on the latest library project. Read more about this successful partnership.

Rotary UN Day

On 7 November, over 1,600 representatives from the United Nations, Rotary clubs, and Rotary programs attended Rotary UN Day, an event dedicated to celebrating the close relationship between Rotary and the United Nations, including their progress and continued efforts toward achieving the UN Millennium Development Goals.

The UN has recognized the work of Rotary's international service programs in achieving these goals. In countless World Community Service projects, Rotary clubs from different countries have become partners in tackling large-scale issues in areas such as poverty, education, gender equality, and the environment. Rotary Volunteers from around the world have administered the polio vaccine during National Immunization Days, an integral part of Rotary's work to eradicate the disease. Through efforts such as these, Rotary is doing its part to achieve the Millennium Development Goals. Learn more about Rotary's collaboration with the UN and other organizations.

Country Profile:

 Pakistan

Country overview

The modern state of Pakistan was created as a homeland for Muslims after the partition of the Indian subcontinent in 1947. Today, it is home to 180.8 million people. Islam is the dominant religion, and there are six major languages: English, Urdu, Punjabi, Sindhi, Pashto, and Balochi. Pakistan's main exports include cotton, leather goods, rice, and textile products. The country extends from the Himalayas to the Arabian Sea, and its capital is Islamabad.

Pakistan's Medium-Term Development Framework outlines its strategy for meeting the UN Millennium Development Goals by 2015. By the end of the 2009-10 fiscal year, the government plans to have doubled its spending on health and education as a percentage of the country's gross domestic product (GDP). It aims to increase poverty-reduction spending to 6.49 percent of GDP in 2010, which is 2.24 percent higher than it was in 2004-05. Challenges to reducing poverty include inflation due to high commodity prices and growing deficits as a result of increased liabilities on public funds.

Other achievements include successful vaccination campaigns against measles and polio. Pakistan vaccinated over 63 million children against measles in April 2008, the largest campaign to date. There has also been a reduction in the number of polio cases, which dropped from 117 in 2008 to 81 cases to date in 2009. Polio vaccination campaigns reach 95 percent of targeted children (32 million) at least four times a year.

Projects seeking assistance
