Rotary lights up the world with End Polio Now

What do the Egyptian Pyramid of Khafre, the Buenos Aires Obelisk and Chicago's Wrigley Building have in common?

End Polio Now is projected onto the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela in Galicia, SpainEach of these iconic landmarks provided a dramatic backdrop for an equally dramatic message: End Polio Now. Those three words, representing Rotary's pledge to rid the world of this crippling childhood disease, were projected onto each structure this week in celebration of the humanitarian service organization's 105th anniversary on 23 February.

"By lighting these historic landmarks with Rotary's pledge to end polio, Rotary is saying to the world that we will fight this disease to the end," says Glenn E. Estess Sr., a senior leader with Rotary International. "People around the world will see these words and join Rotary and its partners in the historic effort to eradicate polio from the face of the earth."

The illumination of the pyramid is particularly symbolic because Egypt's long history spans humanity's struggle with the disease. Ancient Egyptian artwork features the earliest known depictions of people disabled by polio, and in 2006, Egypt and Niger became the most recent nations to be declared polio-free, leaving only four polio-endemic countries: Afghanistan, India, Nigeria and Pakistan.

Kick Polio Out of Africa in Cape TownFootball fans and Rotary unite to kick polio out of Africa

In the months leading up to June's FIFA World Cup in South Africa, Rotary clubs across Africa are gearing up for the final push to kick polio out of the continent.

On 23 February, a Pan-African initiative called Kick Polio Out of Africa launched in Cape Town, coinciding with Rotary's 105th birthday celebration. The effort started with the symbolic kicking of a football signed by Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu, who had polio as a child and has joined Rotary's campaign as polio goodwill ambassador.

Football signed by Archbishop Desmond TutuFrom Cape Town, a host city for the 2010 World Cup, the ball will travel through 22 polio-affected countries to Egypt en route to the Rotary International Convention in Montreal in June.

During the ball's four-month journey, Rotary clubs in polio-affected African countries will organize football-related polio awareness events to mobilize the public for mass immunization rounds in the spring. From 6 to 8 March, 19 countries in Central and West Africa will participate in synchronized national immunization activities, targeting 85 million children under age 5. The journey is being underwritten by DHL Express.
