Meets Tuesdays 6.00pm for 6.30pm at Fiascos Restaurant, Parkwood Tavern, Olsen Ave, Parkwood

THE PRES

Well that's the first month done. Between the changeover, a club assembly, Christmas in July and the visit from the District Governor, we have all been very busy. Now that all of the official business is over, for the time being anyway, we can start to look towards doing what rotary clubs do best.

August is Membership and Extension month in rotary and we intend to do our bit by inducting a new member, Teresa Dawson, next week, hearing from two new members, Craig and Susan in the coming month and having an out of club evening on 22nd August. Friends, partners and guests are welcome so please invite them along. Details of the function at a local restaurant should be available by next week's meeting and we will be looking for numbers during the following week. It all goes towards making our club more prominent in the area and encouraging any others who may be interested in rotary to come along and see what goes on. And we will have a good time too.

GOT AN IDEA FOR A PROJECT?. I  encourage any members to contact either myself or any of the board members with any ideas or concepts they have for projects with which our club can become involved. The board meets the first Monday of the month ( Monday 7th in August) and will look at any reasonable projects, plans or activities that the Parkwood Rotary Club can help with.

THE BOARD . Speaking of which I remind all board members of the board meeting at my office (12 Evergreen Court Parkwood) next Monday 7th August at 5.30 pm. If you have any items you wish included in the agenda, please let Susan know by email.

THE NEW MONTHLY ROSTER system is up and going. During August, John Smith and Lisa Murdoch will be contacting members randomly each week requesting their assistance in the running of the club's weekly meetings. It was great to see not only John and Lisa carrying out certain duties but Doug Thomas revelling in his "Welcoming" role. Please be as helpful as possible if contacted.

Shortly a memo will be emailed around outlining the expectations of each job you may be called upon to undertake and which Board Member and Rotarian will be co-ordinating each month.

As a heads up for September and October, the following members have been rostered on as co-ordinators:

SEPTEMBER:

Karyn Joyner & Mark Twyford

OCTOBER:

Mike Bottomley & Margaret Grummit

IT IS WITH SADNESS that we learned this week of the passing of Lesley Richards' father. Allen and Lesley recently lost Allen's father as well. Condolences from the members of the Parkwood Rotary Club to the Richards' family.

NEW EDITOR-URGENT We are still looking for an editor. At this rate it looks like it may have to be an all in job with members taking turns collating information for each edition. If you have some spare time let me know or we will have to look to this as an alternative.

THIS WEEK we had a visit from our regular St Leonards' Rotarian (and auditor) Peter Lucas who is our neck of the woods for a week or two, Teresa Dawson who is to become our newest member and Eddie Young, a local dentist and guest of Brian Knowles and Ken Smith.

Unfortunately our guest speaker for the evening, Kate Braybrook who was going to enlighten us about her GSE experience had to cancel at the last minute. She will re-schedule but we had the pleasure of the return of Maxine Cooper who, on very short notice and without the assistance of projection equipment, managed to provide us with  up to the minute details of the project she has been working on for the past 12 months which has kept her away from the club and travelling the world. She spoke about her recent travels, colleagues and research into teacher education, particularly for rural & remote areas and trying to attract teachers to these small communities for more than a year or 2.
She attended conferences/researched in Atlanta, Georgia ; Aberdeen, Scotland ; Oslo, Norway ; Madrid, Spain ; San Francisco, USA.
She also showed us an excellent video shot in and around Richmond & Hughenden showing teachers fitting into these remote communities.

We also heard from Lisa who told us of a plan to build townhouses within the Parkwood Gold Course. She hopes to have the developer in to talk to us in the next few weeks.

NEXT WEEK one of our newest members Craig Tobler (and husband of our President Elect Karyn), will give his "Man behind the Badge" talk. These talks are always interesting and a great way to get to know our members. We also intend on inducting yet another new member on Tuesday in Teresa Dawson so come along and welcome her into the club.
